Independence Day: Resurgence (2016)

20th Century Fox has released the first official trailer to Independence Day: Resurgence! With a scheduled release date of June 24, 2016, the movie picks up 20 years after the original Will Smith Independence Day movie.

Jeff Goldblum's character, David Levinson, has been using his expertise to help Earth forces to incorporate alien technology into military weapons in preparation of the expected return of the alien force. Will Smith isn't returning but Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, and Brent Spiner(?!) all return along with Liam Hemsworth rounding out the featured case. For anybody who has seen the original movie the return of Brent Spiner is a bit of a surprise.

To answer fan questions about what has taken place in the 20 year gap the studio has created a new web site, War of 1996 | Independence Day: Resurgence, to fill in some of details like us now having a military base on the moon.

The aliens are back... and they are mad! :wideeyed:

Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

So what happened to Will Smith's character, Steven Hiller? The War of 1996 site provides the answer.

War of 1996 said:
While test piloting the ESD's first alien hybrid fighter, an unknown malfunction causes the untimely death of Col. Hiller. Hiller's valor in the War of '96 made him a beloved global icon whose selfless assault against the alien mothership lead directly to the enemy's defeat. He is survived by his wife Jasmine and his son Dylan.

The son, Dylan, is one of the new characters in the movie.

The aliens are back... and they are mad! :wideeyed:

I have noticed a general trend for science fiction entertainment to be bigger, louder, and more explosions at the sacrifice of character and story. What's particularly disheartening is how noteworthy characters such as Jeff Goldblum and Bill whatshisname are brought back to make a few more bucks off box office revenue, but the script they are reading from just doesn't sound like real people.

This trailer exemplifies this ongoing trend, where predictable revenue seems to override artistic creativity.

Bigger alien spaceships. Bigger explosions. And cheesy 8th grader dialog.

It would actually be nice to see what adults would produce if given the controls of these productions.

But then again. It might scare or intimidate the kiddies.

I can't say I look forward to this one. But I'll watch it in the absence of anything else to do.

Debating whether to see this one or not...
I'll watch it but when it hits the streaming services. The only movie that I'm planning on physically going to a theater for is Star Wars VII and that'll be in a few weeks when the crowds are gone so the Mrs. & I can enjoy it as a weekend matinee.

If nothing else I'm curious about this sequel to see how they explain why the mothership in the first movie turns out to not really have been the mothership.

sometimes you just have to turn off your higher functions and enjoy the (BOOM!) ride...
And when the occurrence of this exceeds a felgercarb threshold, as seen through the following simplistic formula:

O^BOOM >( BOOM * CT )/(GM-BOOM) where CT = 0.90 or 90%, when the amount of felgercarb meets or exceeds the Value Added by General Entertainment Offerings, VAxGEO denoted clearly with the acronym GM, the motivation and desire level (O to the BOOM power) provides a decreasing return.

Since Independence Day originally came out, motivation and desire level was HIGH, but that was an eternity ago and has since, with rare gem exceptions such as Matrix and Fight Club, the O^BOOM level has consistently fallen to the lowest level in history.

I suspect this means:

H*CT=BDP, where Hollywood's felgercarb threshold is roughly equivalent to how much brain death it's currently experiencing is an exceedingly high number right now, and this flawed equation:

BDC=|BDP|, where Brain Dead Consumers should normally be equivalent to Hollywood's Brain Dead Percentage, but occasionally statisticians smoking too much ganga think it's an absolute value and get confused when it turns negative, where the real occasion

BDC=BDP, when turning negative, simply means the consumers are dead and not responding.

Which completely blows away any O^BOOM meaning.

A simulation can be run to determine that the current trajectory suggests that the mass in O^BOOM activities will rise exponentially until the world itself goes kaboom.

Clearly, a problem. If left unchecked, Planet Earth could be facing a catastrophe of such catastrophic proportions that it would make a nuclear bomb look like a firecracker.

A buddy and I went and saw it at the early morning showing on Saturday and Sunday during opening weekend. I was honestly surprised that the place wasn't packed, but we went to see the 2D version (3D gives him headaches, and it rarely does anything for me above 2D), so that may have helped.

Hopefully they'll show the original ID on TV a few times in the weeks leading up to the new movie coming out, so I can actually remember what all happened.

I did love Independence Day, and the cast was good real good. After having just viewed the trailer for the second go around or reboot it does look good like the 1st a bang and boom for your buck action, scifi, thriller popcorn movie. I do like Liam Hemsworth and am glad to see some of the cast from the 1st movie back especially Jeff Goldblum and Judd Hirsch. Having said that I will either think of this as a sequel pending, or a whole new movie.

anyone watch the Super Bowl? they had a hilarious clip from the movie, in which there's a jet flyover over a football game, then the jets are chased by the alien microships. pew pew!

I saw this one yesterday; even though everything was bigger (Bigger ship! Bigger alien! Bigger weapons!) I was underwhelmed by it a bit. There were a lot of visual imagery similar to the first movie but it kind of felt like it was an unofficial sequel by Asylum for the SyFy channel.

Thinking on it, the issue I may have with it is that it is all action, no suspense. From the first movie there are certain scenes that just stand out, like the ship over the White House in DC or the people on the rooftop in LA looking up the ship thinking that they going to party with E.T. -- there is nothing similar to that feel in the sequel.

If the intent of killing the Queen alien was that all of the aliens & ships should "just stop" then why did the giant 3K mile-wide ship take off after her death? And where was it going? Shouldn't that giant ship still be a concern?

In response to your spoiler (attempting not to reveal anything)

Perhaps the capitol ship was controlled by remote by some thing we have not seen yet?

Been awhile since I watched it but I believe the ships the get deystroyed are all ships that were in the atmosphere? Capitol ship was not.

As for the 'feel' yup, I get what you mean...something was amiss.

I just rewatched this one and going back to my question above (not using spoiler tags, it's been out long enough)...

I still don't get why the ships just left. I may have to go back and watch it yet again because there was a quick sentence while discussing the plan to attack the queen as to what would happen after but heck if I recall what exactly the reason was for the ships to leave like that.

If I remember correctly,
The Sphere Alien stated that the drilling ship is recalled by another queen. This implies a type of quantum or telepathic communication is maintained between the queens over vast distances of space. The same connection the queen had with her minions on Earth. That the recalling queen is able to manipulate distant drilling ships with this unique ability.
It kinda holds true for the first ID movie when they said that the mothership that was destroyed had a queen, but... there are still inconsistencies with the existing drilling ship (the first, smaller one) not being recalled and the assumption that a 'distress signal' was 'broadcast' of which the Sphere Alien detected.
If there were a quantum or telepathic connection, the Sphere Alien would not have been able to detect a signal. Without that detection, it would have not known to come to Earth to rescue its inhabitants.
Another inconsistency is the fact that the worker minions in the prison did not know the new queen was coming until she nearly arrived. For a distant queen to recall the drilling ship, she would need to be in contact with the ships minions over vast distances, to direct their retreat. The imprisoned minions should have detected the new queen immediately.

When I saw that film, I had 1980's flash backs. Will smith crashing the ufo walking with a parachute and the machine was on fire, the right stuff Chuck Jager walking away from the f-104 smoking on the desert. My fave is when the ufos popped up everywere. When they went to hover mode over cities round the globe, I had another 80's flash back. The cool movie "V" comes to mind, I bet you could sync up the scenes pretty close.

Its funny, the 90s a decade that trashed out the 80's so much plagerized the 80's so much, hmmm. As for the new film, it was pretty good, defo a "b" eat popcorn, sip rootbeer by the fire place on a cold rainy day kinda film....
