Iron Sky (2012)

Iron Sky is a film we've been following for well over a year in fact it was about this time last year that we brought you the first look at the film's Cannes '08 sales poster. Well, the production may have been taking baby steps over the past year but at least it's good to know it's still on track and looking better than ever. In fact, in a recent press release, the Iron Sky team let the world know that they have rounded out their casting with Julia Dietze signed on as "Renate Richter" and Götz Otto cast as "Klaus Adler."

Synopsis:
Towards the end of World War II, in 1945, the SS officer Hans Kammler’s staff made a significant breakthrough in anti-gravity research. From a secret base built in the Antarctic, the first Nazi spaceships were launched in late ‘45, and they founded the military base Schwarze Sonne (Black Sun) on the so-called dark side of the Moon. The purpose of this base was to build a powerful invasion fleet and return to take over the Earth once the time was right.

We've also been given their new character posters which are extremely reminiscent of the recent wave of Inglorious Basterds one sheets that have been flooding the net. Personally, I'm looking forward to Iron Sky a wee bit more. Those and an amazingly striking new motion poster for the film are after the break.

Also, you can watch the original teaser here.

Re: Iron Sky - Alternate timeline Nazi PA flick

WWII alternate history movie? Why, yes, yes you do have my attention. :D

Is it coming to DVD anytime soon?

It's a spooky "What If" senerio

IRON SKY

Originally when I first saw this promo, I thought it was for a video game. I'm curious to see this movie.

When's this actually coming out anyway? Seems like they've been working on it for quite a while now.

Re: Iron Sky - Alternate timeline Nazi PA flick

The guys making Iron Sky made a previous film in 2005 called Star Wreck. It's a hilarious and amazingly well-made parody movie combining Star Trek and Babylon 5. See the trailer here. Once upon a time it was available for free online, but no longer. It's on DVD though, and you can get it from Netflix.

Remember, these are amateurs, but the big space battle in this movie looks better than battles in some major studio movies! Visually impressive, and funny as hell. As long as you can stand listening to Finnish and reading subtitles. Check it out if you get a chance.

I'm really looking forward to Iron Sky.

And now for something completely different…. All those Nazi super-technology conspiracy myths turn out to be true when some near-future US astronauts paying a return visit to the Moon stumble across a huge Nazi base on the dark side. This prompts the Nazis to launch a reconnaissance mission to New York by ambitious senior officer Klaus Adler (Götz Otto), accompanied by his naïve and enthusiastic girlfriend Renate Richter (Julia Dietze), to prepare the way for an attack on the Earth to establish the Fourth Reich. Cue lots of culture-clash comedy with everybody's best-laid plans going seriously awry.

The movie is a Finnish-German-Australian production, with the principal actors being from Germany, Australia and New Zealand. I suspect that it didn't go down too well in the USA, since it isn't just the Nazis who are parodied but the Americans too. The Moon mission turns out to be a re-election stunt by the US President (un-named, but clearly Sarah Palin, played by Stephanie Paul) who seizes on the opportunity to boost her popularity rating. And what could be better than a Star Wars-type battle against the Nazis?

This film is in hilariously bad taste throughout, and I frequently laughed out loud at its sheer effrontery. Don't bother to point out the plot holes or scientific nonsenses, this film revels in them (World War 2 era motorcyle-sidecar combinations puttering across the Moon?). The story was by Johanna Sinisalo, a Nebula Award-nominated Finnish SFF writer, but the sense of humour seemed to me to have a strong Australian flavour - subtle it ain't! I don't know what the film-makers were on, but they surely had a ball. Probably best watched in company with the aid of alcoholic pre-lubrication and with your critical faculties locked away for the ride.

So I should love it then! :D

This might seem like an odd question, but are there a number of musical sequences in it? Some of the follow-ups I saw about Iron Sky over the years made it sound like it was going to be a musical-comedy and my initial excitement for it quickly waned.
