Sci-Fi Marvel's The Avengers

Re: Avengers, is it worth going to see? Anyone seen it yet?

It's too bad for DC Comics, because I don't think a Justice League live action movie could top The Avengers.

Have you ever seen the live-action 1997 television version of the Justice League. I was stunned at what I saw. Check out the opener.

Anyway, I loved the movie. Seeing the Avengers finally on the big screen was awesome! The original story was taken from issue #1 and updated with bits and pieces from Marvel Comic stories from the past...then presto! A great movie was made! I'm glad I didn't watch any of the preview trailers for this film. Man-alive, I was just blown away by this great movie.

I've been a fan of the Marvel superheros since I was a little kid watching the cartoons in the 1960's, then reading the comic books in the 1970's and beyond. I can't wait to see the sequel.

Happy to hear you enjoyed The Avengers. My wife and I saw it the second weekend it was in the theaters and truly enjoyed it. It will definitely be in our DVD collection! Being a fan of both major comic book companies and their characters, I too would be very receptive to a big budget Justice League. That being said, I am not too sure it would necessarily top The Avengers. Mainly because Marvel and the filmakers have done an excellent job of "connecting the dots" with the various individual movies that are tied to this summer's block buster. I don't see DC/Warner Bros. doing that. They've got a great franchise in Batman and another one, Superman that has the potential to be revived. Other than that, DC/Warner Bros. does not seem to have a lot going on right now. If you disagree, let me know.

I've been a DC Comics fan for a long time, I also enjoy how very different their characters are (from Marvel's). But, since Marvel has had great success with movies, DC decided to make much darker stories. For example, the movie Batman & Robin was very silly, then a wonderful thing happened, DC's Batman returned to the big screen in Batman Begins, I was thrilled to see the change.

However when Superman came back in the film Superman Returns, I was very disappointed along with many others who thought the movie was terrible. I was stunned to learn Mr-Goody-Two-Shoes had a (screaming) child out-of-wedlock. Shame, shame, we know you're name Clark.

Then Batman was in Dark Knight which I thought was great, but really violent, and maybe little kids shouldn't see it, but I know they're going to anyway. Later the Green Lantern followed and it wasn't that great, so I started to think it's over for DC's heros in the movies. I've seen great cartoon movies featuring DC's best heros, I wish those were made into live-action flicks.

Anyway, I'm still holding out for the Justice League to make it on the big screen. Oh, and Jonah Hex wasn't bad.

Re: The Avengers

Point well taken, friend. I'll continue to hope for a great Justice League live action movie as well. Have not seen Jonah Hex yet. Might be something else I need to add to my ever expanding list of DVD rentals! It's obvious to me that there are not enough hours in the day!

Avengers Assemble (2012)

Film: Avengers Assemble (2012)

I have rather enjoyed some of the recent superhero movies, particularly the first Iron Man and also Thor, both reviewed on this blog. They both took the time to develop their principal characters plus their relationships with other people, and contained a lot of both dramatic and amusing situations and repartee to balance the action scenes. I haven't seen any of the films about the other superheroes so can't comment on those, but a movie which brought several of them together to defend the Earth against an attack from an alien dimension sounded entertaining and the reviews looked good, so I began watching Avengers Assemble with interest.

Sadly, I was greatly disappointed. Only a few token gestures were made towards the elements which made the other films so enjoyable: there was hardly any character development or humour. Most of the movie consisted of fight scenes which just went on and on interminably. As Scarlett Johansson said of her part in the film: "I've spent so many months training with our stunt team, and fighting all the other actors, it's crazy. I do nothing but fight—all the time." After it was over, the person I saw it with commented "That was for eight year olds. I thought it would never end". I think that was maybe a little harsh and that the age of the target market was possibly as high as twelve, but I took the point. While the CGI was of the spectacularly high standard we expect nowadays, the story was about as subtle as being hit over the head with a rock, over and over. I was recently rather critical of the remake of Total Recall, but that was positively Shakespearean in the quality of the plot, dialogue and acting compared with Avengers Assemble.

There seems to be an increasing tendency for SFF films to split into two groups; the big blockbusters which are aimed at the lowest common denominator and focus almost entirely on spectacle and violence, and the more subtle and complex movies intended to appeal to adults. Some films have managed to combine elements of both quite successfully, as I mentioned at the start, but I have the impression that they are in a dwindling minority. The second Iron Man film, for instance, impressed me a lot less than the first. I note that a sequel to AA is intended, but I have no great hopes for that. Since the original was such a huge box-office success, the sequel will almost certainly just be more of the same. Oh well, I'll just have to pick and choose my films a little more carefully in the future.

Re: Avengers Assemble (2012)

Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and you're no exception, Anthony. I do have to disagree with some specific points. I thought that not only did The Avengers exhibit a fair amount of humor, but the action sequences were outstanding. I agree that there was not a lot of character development in this movie, but that's where the individual character tie in movies carry the ball, so to speak. An action movie like this one with so many main characters is not going to delve too deeply into character development. To sum it up, I respectfully disagree with you, Anthony. The Avengers remains a great movie in my mind and I look forward to the sequel. The Avengers is superior in every conceivable way to any of the Transformers movies.

That's OK, I realise that I'm in a minority in my opinion. I just prefer to see more balance between the different elements in a good movie. Action has its place, but it dominated AA to an excessive degree for my taste. I can't comment on the Transformer movies as I've never seen them - and your comment reinforces my view that I'd better not bother...

I am sure I am not alone on this forum when indicating that your reviews are welcome here. There's always enjoyment to be found when reading another person's view on any type of movie. I just had to disagree with you on a few points, but again, there was no intention to be disrespectful to you (so hopefully, you'll continue to post reviews and opinions).

Honestly, you likely wouldn't like any of the Transformer movies. Their origins are based on the old cartoon series which itself was just a front for selling the toys which means the recent movies are a diluted microscopic sliver of the real "Transformers" mythology. Even as a popcorn movie, the 2nd movie was just bad to the point where even though I love watching B-movies, I couldn't help but think "This is bad... oh, this is bad." while watching it. They tried making up a bit for it with the 3rd movie but the three movies as whole unfortunately just further the stereotype of a "Michael Bay movie" production.

Indeed! One of the greatest things about genre works, whether it be movies, graphic arts, or in print, is that two people can see/hear the same thing and come away with totally different views. Even now I re-watch some movies with my wife, who is not a genre fan, and her take on some of them makes me wonder about movies that I had known for years but never interpreted in the way she does.

No problem - if everybody agreed with each other all of the time, it would be a very dull world!

Yes, you're correct about it. It would be a dull world if we all agreed upon every aspect of life, whether it be entertainment or whatever. My wife and I share that same outlook when we disagree, and I feel the same way with any of my friends who may have a different view from my own.

It's Thanos, the guy on the Avengers Cover displayed above. (if that's legit, that's awesome!)
I don't know much about him except that he's essentially a Marvel universe 'Big Bad.'
He apparently likes things called 'Infinity Gauntlets' and is scary.

thx!
didn't recognize Alexis Denisof. he totally ruled as Wes in 'Angel'.
very impressed wi Avengers. could have been painful in less-capable hands.

I heard it was so good that before it came out on DVD I watched Captain America and Thor already had watch Ironman and The Hulk. I hope I hadn't wasted my time getting caught up but to my relief it surpassed my expectations.
