random episode discussion

so i was just watching some reruns of buffy today to avoid studying. ;) and i really wanted to talk about some of them. so i guess this thread is just for random episode discussions - just like the title says.

i watched a whole bunch of reruns today (i was really procrastinating), but the one that really stuck with me was "normal again" from the 6th season. it's the one where the nerd trio send some sort of demon out to attack buffy and it injects her with some sort of poison. buffy starts hallucinating that she's in a mental institution and the doctor and her parents are telling her that the world where she's a slayer isn't real.

the episode ends with buffy "dying" in the hallucination world (where she was in the mental institution) and it almost reminded me of alias. which world was the "real" one? i mean, do we REALLY know? is it crazy that i almost started to believe what the doctor and her parents were saying - that she was making up a world where she was a hero that killed demons and vampires. obviously, it sounds crazy, but i couldn't stop thinking - what if none of this is real? every episode i watched after that just made me wonder if buffy was just "hallucinating" all of this and all of it was just happening in her head. very matrix-y. i think it sort of just spooked me.

well, and it probably doesn't help that we were learning about schizophrenia this quarter in my abnormal psychology class so a lot of what the doctor was saying was actually true, medically speaking. it's sort of cool when you can apply what you've learned to television. :D

anyway, what does everyone else think? or we can talk about other episodes too, if you want.

I remember being very disturbed by that episode too. Especially the way it ended...By ending it at the hospital, it seemed to imply that that was the real world. It really did bug me that Joss was implying that Buffy was just a crazy girl and the whole slayer thing was only in her mind. But then eventually I told myself that since none of it is really real anyway, it doesn't actually matter. (Of course, that didn't help. The same way it doesn't help when I tell myself that about Alias. It still bugs me!! Lol.)

On the subject of random episodes....Did any of you ever happen to frequent the orginal Buffy Posting Board? We had a sort of a little community going on there, and Joss and the actors (mostly Alyson Hannigan and Nick Brendon) would come there and chat sometimes.

But anyway, in the second season, we asked if they would send a "shout-out" to us in an episode, where only we would notice it. And in the episode "Bad Eggs", when Buffy, Xander, Willow, and Cordy are in the classroom right after Xander discovers what's in his egg, if you look on the chalkboard behind them, it says "POSTINGBOARD" in big letters. That was their way of saying hi to us. I just noticed it again the other day and remembered how cool it was that they did that. Anyway, just thought I'd share. Sort of a Buffy "urban legend", I guess. (That happens to be true.)

That ep (mental institute one) was great
It just made you think and question everything
I love episodes like that
Cuz you know what you never know what really is the truth.
My friend just brushed it off by saying well Angel really exists so Buffy really exists...

and that was tres cool about the shout out..I think they've done it in a few episodes

I just bought season 2 dvds..its like watchign them again for the first time because i remember so little

Yes, "Normal Again" was definately one of my favorite episodes. Well, maybe not favorite. Definately most memorable. I remember sitting down and watching Buffy and definately NOT expecting such an intense, "out there" episode. It was really great and interesting...

So guys. Which is the really Buffy world? ^.^ I don't even want to think about it...

oh yeah, that ending was definitely creepy and unnerving, especially with buffy just sitting there catatonic (not the only time she's been like that either, remember "weight of the world"?).

hey, that's so cool!! i'm jealous now. :P

OOO YOU should have SEEN me after Normal Again. I went INSANE, or insaner than usual. It drove me nuts, not that my friends made it any better, with thier insistence that the other world was real... But I came to this conclusion, and then went after my friends with an ax:

The other world couldn't have been real, because then Angel wouldn't exist either, and there are things in Angel that Buffy doesn't know about. Plus, what's the point of spending millions of dollars on two shows, if you're gonna make them fake.

But seriously, I both hated and loved Joss for this ep. Hated him for torturing me for a week, and loved him for being ABLE to torture me for a week.

Joss and I have a very love/hate relationship. Majorly. He spends his time on both my Love list and my Hit list.

OK, I'm gonna cry now. I seriously can feel the tears in my eyes. I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THIS!!! 😭 I WISH I'D KNOWN I WOULD HAVE VISITED! 😭

:hits computer: WHY DIDN'T YOU FIND IT WHEN I SEARCHED FOR BUFFY MESSAGE BOARDS??

WHY???

😭

i think that's what's so amazing about this episode ("you hear that sound, that boom? that's my mind blowing." :lol:smiley:. i mean, it's like you KNOW that the buffy world we're in now is the "real" world but there's still that small niggle in your head that just won't go away and keeps thinking, "but what if it ISN'T real?" and it just bothers you that you're not 100% certain.

Well, it hasn't been around in a long time, if that makes you feel any better. ^_^ It was the original WB site, and during the first and second seasons, before the show got really popular, there were only maybe about 100 or so people who posted there regularly. That's why the people from the show could visit there. When the show got more popular (and there were more visitors to the site) they would get swamped with questions when they showed up and it would be chaos, so by the third season, it was only Joss and a few other writers who would visit occasionally. But I still remember how exciting it was when they answered my questions; I would be on Cloud Nine for days afterwards!

Up until last year, they still held the annual Posting Board Party in LA. The people from the board organized it, and the stars of the show actually came. (Everyone except Sarah Michelle Gellar, that is. She never showed up. ^_^ ) As a member, I was invited, but I never could afford to go. Damn plane ticket prices!!! But when the show moved to UPN, the board was also effectively dismantled. The UPN site sucked. (n)

I agree, the UPN site does suck. I would occassionly show up at the buffy board...
But I was never around when creators, actors, writers posted...haha i managed to miss teh good stuff everytime

the upn site does suck. i love that normal again ep. does anyone else like tht s6 ep tabalsa rasa where they all loose their memorys. i love that for pure comic value espesially the bit where spike thinks his name is Randy!!! and on a bit of a random note i haven't seen the final ep of buffy yet. i've got 2 weeks to go so i'm trying to remain spoiler free (wish me luck) :crosses fingers:

well i certainly wont spoil it for you, intentionally

That memory episode was hilarious....
I loved how Anya and Giles thought they were together and Willow and Xander
and Willow "I think I'm kinda gay"

Another fave episode of mine is "Once more with Feeling" I could watch it a million times

I love the episode "Once More, With Feeling" too. (I bought the soundtracke even.) Gosh, when I look back I can think of sooo many eps i loved. Here are some of my favs. "Ted" (John Ritter!!) "Band Candy" "Gingerbread" "Enemies" "Hush" "Something Blue" "Once More With Feeling" "School Hard" "Killed By Death" and the list goes on......... but these were the ones I though off the top of my head.

And the part in Hush where Buffy was trying to act out "staking" but it looked like she was doing something else and everyone gave her a funny look so she had to get the actual stake.....:sideroll:

I loved all the funny ones. Tabula Rasa I think is one of the all-time funniest. "Randy Giles"....LMAO!!

I also thought Dopplegangland, in Season 3, was hilarious. It's the one with the vampire Willow. I loved when she came in and Giles, Xander, & Buffy hugged her cause they'd thought she was vamped, and she looked at them and said, "Hey! You guys didn't happen to do a bunch of drugs, did ya?" Just the way that she said it....::rotflmao:

this is sort of a random question, but does anyone know the name of the sarah mclachlan song that's played at the end of "grave"? i feel bad because i'm a huge sarah mclachlan fan but i can't figure out what it is. :(

According to www.buffymusic.net (which lists every single song in every episode), that would be "Prayer of St. Francis, which only appears on the second disc of the limited-edition double-disc pressing of Surfacing. (But could probably be illegally downloaded, if you were so *evily* inclined. :lol:smiley:

LMAO tsk tsk, Plotting Azalea and Crazy Spinster... LMAO JK...

And if I HAD anyway to download, I'd join you in... um... you know.. :gestures at the wire in the room: :whispers: downloading... :regular voice: Cuz I love that song.

I feel the need to discuss another episode... I don't know why, I just feel seriously lacking in Buffyness. 😭 I can't get past it, I can't get past it.

What helps me is on FX every morning and night there are 2 episodes of Buffy normally. That makes 4 a day! Definately good for the Buffy soul.
