CHAPTER 4

Sydney shifted in her bed and turned her head. Sitting next to her bed were Jack and Vaughn. Vaughn was asleep, his cheek placed on his palm. Again Sydney saw the gold ring and felt the same empty feeling in her stomach.
I guess it wasn't a dream. Sydney thought as she felt the vomit coming up her throat. She jumped out of the bed and ran into the en suite bathroom. Vaughn woke to hear Sydney coughing in the bathroom.
"Does she still vomit blood?"Vaughn asked turning to Jack.
"No, they managed to stop the internal bleeding." He replied bluntly. Sydney walked out of the bathroom and saw her father and Vaughn talking.
"DAD!" She cried, running up to him and hugging him. "Hey, my jaw healed. Wow do the CIA have some new technology to heal that I don't know about?" Jack chuckled lightly, something he rarely did.
"Sydney, you've been asleep for about two weeks now" He said smiling at Sydney's confused expression.
"I can't have been asleep, I'd know!" she insisted. She coughed. Jack looked concerned.
"Do you need a drink?" Sydney nodded, smiling gratefully. Jack left the room to get a drink.
"So.....how are you doing?" Vaughn asked. Sydney felt pangs of pain and despair. She loved someone who she could never have. She'd already been through this twice, two times was joke.
"I'll live." She replied, not meeting Vaughn's eyes.
"Do you need me to get you anything?" he asked.
"Vaughn... please just leave me alone!" she glanced down at the ring on his finger. He followed her furtive look. He suddenly remembered.
"Oh god. Syd I'm sorry, but I can explain, really. It's just a............?" He started but Sydney interrupted him.
"It's just a what? A fling, something that will pass?" she said coldly. " I don't want to hear it Vaughn just get out of my face!"
"Syd...please............."Vaughn started. Again Sydney interrupted him.
"GET OUT OF HERE..........NOW!" she shouted. Vaughn watched as Sydney lay down on the bed and turned over with her back to him. He sighed and walked out, stopping at the door and seeing Sydney shuddering as she cried. He felt so guilty, he had allowed Sark to cause life threatening injuries to her and now she thought he was married. All he wanted to do ws tell her it was a lie, a fake and that they were still together. But he couldn't so he was forced to leave her to herself.

CHAPTER 5

Jack walked back into the hospital room, a plastic cup clutched in his hand. He had just met Vaughn walking briskly down the corridor, not seeing him. He saw Sydney, her backed turned away from him, her head buried deep in her pillow. Her back was rising and falling in judders and JAck could tell she was crying.
"The doctor says you can leave today if you feel up to it?" Jack said curiously, he knew he needed to be careful what he said when she was in this mood. She climbed out of the bed, rubbing her hand roughly over her eyes, wiping the tell tale tears away.
"Good I can't stand this place!" she said. She tried to look as if she was moody and didn't want to speak, but it failed as she got halfway to the door and Jack called.
"You might not want to go out in a hospital gown" Sydney turned and glared at him.
"So, where are my clothes?" Jack smiled at the question, he felt pleased that he had got clothes for her.
" They're in the closet" She smiled and walked over to hug im.
"Thanks dad" He nodded and pointed to the small, wood closet near the window. She opened it and found some clothes, folded neatly on the second shelf. She opened the bathroom door and walked in.

Sydney walked out in plain jeans and a shirt. She couldn't remember ever wearing these or even buying them. She felt something sticking into her back and felt a price tag. Her dad was sitting on the bed reading her ' get well soon' cards.
"Dad?" He looked up, his face was a little flushed. "Did you go out and but these clothes for me?" His face went red and he looked down.
"I thoght you might like to wear something, completely new.........and it was kind of like...well... kind of like a welcome home present." She smiled at him.
"I love you, dad" she said, wrapping her arms around his neck and hugging him tightly.
"You look beautiful"
"Thanks" she paused, turning back as she was halfway through the door. "Is my house the same?" Jack knew the answer to this, he had been the one who organised a team to clear Sydney's house.
"Yes. We got a team to come and cear all the bugs from it and I enlisted the help of Will to clean it for your memory. That was a month after you went missing." Sydney's face showed confusion. "Will's still alive. Vaughn found him and he was taken away immediately. He moved house so no one could track him down. Here's the address if you want to contact him and here's his work number. He quit helping the CIA, he didn't want anything to do with us anymore. He works for a small newspaper now" Sydney's face was filled with delight at the thought that at least one o her friends was alive. JAck handed her two pieces of paper with Will's details on them and the he pressed her car keys and house keys into her palm.
"I changed the lock on your house and your car is in the car park" Sydney hugged him one last time and then she left the room, walking purposefully through the corridors.
