Chapter 7

Half an hour later, Sydney was sitting in a chair in the middle of an empty room, wires crisscrossing around her, connected to electrodes stuck all over her. Vaughn and Jack stood behind a window watching worriedly.
“Okay Sydney. I’m going to count backwards from three, and when I get to one, I want you to tell me where you are. 3... 2... 1.”

Sydney looked around her. She was standing in front of her mother’s cell. Looking through the glass, she saw Irina stand up and walk over.
“Sydney” her mother started to say.

“Oh god” Sydney said quietly as memories of her mother came floating back.

She was a little child again, skipping through a park. She held her mother’s hand. Sydney looked up into her mother’s smiling, reassuring face. Suddenly, the scenery changed and she was strapped to a chair in Taipei, looking into her mother’s cold eyes. Irina raised her gun and squeezed the trigger. A single shot rang out.

“No…Michael…” whispered Sydney, her eyes filling with tears.

Sydney was running through the park, ponytail swishing. She smiled cheerily and dropped a coin in the man’s cup, then ran to the broken phone.
All of a sudden she was standing in a completely white room. A light flashed, illuminating the room with red light and she walked forward into SD-6.
Then she was standing in a small booth, gun in her hands. The paper target whirred down the line and into place. She raised her gun and shot several times.

Sydney’s head swam as memories came flooding back. She was overwhelmed with them, good and bad. She was remembering her friends, her family. She was remembering all the lies, all the betrayal, all the deception. Then she remembered all the happiness in her life, and she remembered the love.

Sydney was in the kitchen of a house, her house. She bent over the stove, stirring a pot of sauce. Turning around, she bumped into Vaughn. He smiled at her, passion and love in his eyes. She turned back to the stove, but strong hands pulled her away.
“You’re so beautiful” Vaughn told her as they broke the deep kiss.
“Dinner’s ready” she heard herself whisper.
“You do have an oven, you know. We can reheat” Sydney was lost in his eyes and everything else melted away. Suddenly she was snapped back to Taipei. She was running down a white hallway, running for her life. She shouted at Vaughn, who didn’t move. Why didn’t men listen when she told them what to do? The white door was closing, Vaughn trapped on the other side. She panicked and hurled the fire extinguisher at the window. And then the wave crashed into him and Sydney was dragged away.

“Vaughn!” Sydney screamed, opening her eyes. She was alone in the white room, but she could hear Dr. Kerr’s voice saying, “Sydney, what is it?”
Sydney’s heart was racing as she tried to stand up. Wires got in her way and she tried to pluck them off. Jack and Vaughn burst through the door and ran to her. She stood and Vaughn wrapped his arm around her. “Vaughn” she cried into his chest. “Vaughn, I love you!”
Jack stood nearby, watching them embrace. He desperately wanted to hug Sydney, to comfort her, but he didn’t know what to do. Did she remember him now? Was this finally his chance to tell her he loved her? After a moment, Sydney’s was able to stop crying and repeating “I love you” into Vaughn’s shirt. She looked up at her father. “Dad” she said quietly, and walked over to him.
“Sydney-“ he started to say, but was interrupted as Sydney wrapped her arms around him. He was surprised, but hugged her back. Tears formed in his eyes and he furiously blinked them back. Looking over Sydney’s shoulder, he could see Vaughn doing the same. “Sydney. I have to tell you something” he said, pulling away to look at her face. “I never got the chance to tell you how proud I am of you and I’ve regretted that for two years. But you need to know how sorry I am for everything that has happened and how much you mean to me. I love you, Sydney.”
Sydney hugged him, tears running down her cheeks once more. She was just so overwhelmed by everything she had remembered in the past hour.
“Hey, guys! Anyone need a kleenex?” said Weiss, popping his head through the door and seeing the three of them in such an emotional state.
Jack gave him a look, while Vaughn tried to blink back his tears. Sydney ran over and hugged him fiercely.
“Wow!” Weiss said as he regained his balance. “If I get this greeting, what does Vaughn get?”
Sydney laughed, rubbing her eyes.
“I get to keep her” Vaughn said, walking over and wrapping his arms around Sydney’s waist. “And this time I won’t let her go.”
