Chapter 10

Sydney and Vaughn walked along the ocean hand in hand. They had spent a lot of the past few days holding hands. Sydney was leading them towards a restaurant where they were planning to eat, while Vaughn was just admiring her.
“Stop staring at me!” she teased, catching his eye.
“I can’t help it” he said sheepishly. “You’re gorgeous” he added as he swept her into a kiss.
Pulling away and smiling happily, Sydney kept walking.

“Do you even know where this restaurant is?” asked Vaughn after a few minutes. “Why don’t we just eat on the beach?”
Sydney just looked at him. “Vaughn. We have no food. Hence us going to the restaurant.”
“Actually…” he said. “Look over there.”
Sydney looked where he was pointing. A basket was sitting by a tree. “A picnic basket?” she asked slowly.
“I wonder how that got there…” Vaughn said, trying to keep a straight face. The two of them walked over and opened it.
“Vaughn…did you do this?” Sydney asked, looking hungrily at the feast inside.
“Who me?” he said, laughing. “Come on, let’s eat.”
The two of them sat on a blanket that they found in the giant basket and ate until they couldn’t anymore.
“Wine, madam?” said Vaughn, producing a bottle of red wine.
“You never cease to amaze me” Sydney said and nodded.
They sat there for a while, watching the ocean and the waves. In the distance there was a small sailboat going to the harbour.
“Have you ever seen the green flash?” asked Sydney, resting her head on Vaughn’s shoulder.
“Green flash?”
“Yeah. Supposedly, just as the setting sun hits the water, there’s a little flash of green light and then the sun sets. You’ve never seen it?”
Vaughn shook his head. “It should happen soon, let’s watch.” Sydney rested her head back on his shoulder. He ran his fingers through her hair, inhaling the faded scent of her shampoo. She smiled contentedly and turned her head to kiss him. When they finally broke the kiss, they realized that the sun had set.
“We missed the flash!” said Sydney sadly.

“Sydney, I have to tell you something” Vaughn said quietly. Sydney turned quickly to look at him.
“What? What is it?”
“It’s nothing bad, I promise. I just needed to tell you how much you mean to me. I love you more than anything and I want to be with you always. Right before you disappeared, I was going to give you something and I never got the chance. I always regretted that and I thought I would never get the chance to tell you this. But now I finally have you back and I have to say it…”
Sydney raised her eyebrows as she guessed what he was going to say.
“You know in When Harry Met Sally, at the very end Harry finds her on New Years?”
Sydney nodded slowly. He had lost her now.
“Well, when he finds her he says, ‘I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with someone, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.’” Vaughn looked at her nervously before continuing. “I want to spend the rest of my life with you, Sydney. Will you…will you marry me?” he finished, pulling a velvet box out of his jacket pocket.
Sydney stared at him in shock for a moment. Then her eyes began to fill with tears and she threw herself into his arms.
Vaughn heard Sydney mumbling something into his chest.
“Was that a yes?” he asked, laughing.
“Yes! Of course it was! Yes, I’ll marry you!” she said, kissing him. “Yes!”
“Here, put it on!” Vaughn said, laughing. He slipped the ring onto her finger and she stared at it, amazed. Turning her hand, she admired it. Upon further inspection, she realized that there was a tiny pair of wings engraved on it. “My guardian angel” she said, before kissing him again.
“Wait until Zara finds out!” he said, making them both laugh. She settled against him again, her hand still outstretched to admire her ring. Vaughn kissed the top of her head, and they sat there peacefully in eachother’s arms watching the dark waves.
