SFX Weekender 2011 blasts off with Star Trek legend

George Takei is first star name announced for UK expo

George Takei, Star Trek’s much-loved Mr Sulu is the first big name guest to be announced for next-year’s SFX Weekender – the UK’s greatest festival of sci-fi.

With more than 40 films and 100s of TV roles to his name, including a regular role in Heroes, George will be one of the big name guests meeting the fans at Sussex’s Camber Sands on 4th and 5th February next year.

Of his appearance at the SFX Weekender, George Takei said:

“I’m boldly going where I have never gone before – to the SFX

Weekender! I greatly look forward to beaming over to Camber Sands in February 2011 to see old friends… and to meet new ones.”

The SFX Weekender 2011 promises fans of sci-fi and fantasy the chance to immerse themselves in a galaxy of culture for two days. The weekend festival at Pontin’s Camber Sands is curated by SFX, the world’s number one sci-fi and fantasy magazine.

Over 2,500 people attended the inaugural event in 2010 to see stars including Tom Baker, James Marsters and Michelle Forbes. Alongside big-name appearances, the event included DJs, bands, authors, quizzes, film and TV previews and a packed programme of entertainment.

With further star guests to be announced over coming months, visitors can expect to see stage appearances by important contributors to sci-fi as Pat Mills (one of the founders of 2000 AD, known as the “godfather of British comics"), authors Stephen Baxter, Mike Carey and Gary Gibson, plus cast and creatives from Primeval, ITV’s hit science fiction show which is returning to TV in 2011. Also confirmed to appear is original Blake's 7 cast member Sally Knyvette who played Jenna Stannis. Fans can look forward to a Q&A and some never-seen-before Blake's 7 memorabilia.

More big name guests, authors, make-up artists and stars from the worlds of sci-fi, horror and fantasy will be announced over the next few months, and the event is shaping up to deliver book readings, interviews, comic workshops, video game sessions and plenty more - watch this space!

Dave Bradley, SFX's editor-in-chief, says: "The 2010 SFX Weekender was a wonderful sci-fi experience and we're so excited about the opportunity to do something even bigger and better for our readers in 2011. With special guests from across all the areas the magazine touches, plus live music and a massive party, this is a chance to join the SFX team and fellow fans for an unforgettable 48 hours. We'll see you there!"

This sounds pretty cool, but San Diego comic con dominates. Lots of hot chicks, nerds and everything comic and scifi related. I really enjoyed seeing all the babes and all the actors promoting their movies. My favorite was the Wild Wild Girls promoting Piranha 3d. This looks like the best movie this summer. So sweeet.

The king of far-fetched fiction back to host the SFX Sci-fi Awards 2011

Often the best things in life take you completely by surprise, and judging by your feedback in the days and weeks after the inaugural SFX Weekender earlier this year, author Robert Rankin’s stint as host of the SFX Sci-fi Awards was a very pleasant surprise indeed. Back by popular demand then (in fact there’s even a forum thread dedicated to the cause if you don’t take our word for it) we’re delighted to announce that Rankin will be returning to dish out the Golden Rayguns to next year’s lucky winners.

Speaking to SFX Rankin told us: “We had such a wonderful time last year, it was such an honour to present the Lifetime Achievement Award to Gerry Anderson. It was one of the high points of this year, and the next event is something to really look forward to – I already have a fine loud suit for the occasion!” Voting kicks off online on 22 September, which also happens to be the day issue 201 of SFX hits shelves, so be sure to look out for further details there.

With over 30 novels to his name (at least one a year for the past 20 years, he’s one busy chap!) Robert Rankin may well be one of the most prolific SF authors working today. His mind-bending stories defy any kind of pigeon hole description: a metafiction melange of detective fiction, comic fantasy and time-travelling vegetables (yep, you heard that right) that the author likes to describe as “far-fetched fiction”. Featuring dozens of recurring characters and overlapping storylines, many of which are set in the London suburb of Brentford where the author grew up, his work is equal parts satisfying and cranium knotting. His latest novel The Japanese Devil Fish Girl And Other Unusual Attractions, as well as having a doozy of a title, received a glowing four star review in the latest issue and also happens to be ideal for anyone yet to become immersed in Rankin’s intertextual referencing looniverse.

Want to see Rankin strut his stuff on the stage? Then you need to join us for The SFX Weekender 2, which returns to Camber Sands holiday camp in East Sussex on Friday 4th February and Saturday 5th February 2011, with our pre-party on Thursday 3rd February for the early birds. VIP tickets are already sold out, and tickets for the pre-party are going fast, but there are still other options available. Make sure you get yours before it’s too late! Book now by calling 08700 11 00 34, or head to www.sfxweekender.com/tickets for more information.
