Sci-Fi Star Trek (2009) {JJ Abrams reboot}

I loved it, this was my review:

A roaring adventure that spans multiple dimensions of sensory input. You are moved to cry, to laugh, to tingle with excitement beyond the level of the expected norm for a sci-fi thriller. A thriller it was, but the fast-paced action was interspersed with just the right amount of poignant character drama that was at the same time nostalgic, and fresh, and ranged from extremely touching to hilariously funny. The real genius was in re-booting the franchise, yet keeping the original history, stories, and characters in tact. The actors put on stellar performances, overcoming the huge challenges involved in not only bringing the emotional content of the script to life, but superbly emulating the style of the original actors. A double challenge that surely was not easy, with the performers mindful that their every eyelash movement would be analysed to death by millions of fans devoted to the original incarnation.
That’s not to say that if you go mining, you can’t dig up some holes, or fall into some traps. The cliches were there, too - but it didn’t seem to matter because of the emotional ride and just plain fun.

The SF news show in my sig banner talked about it of course in episodes around the time of it's release.

I agree with everything you wrote except the part of keeping to the original history, the film itself changed the history in itself by killing Kirk's father, destroying the Vulcan homeworld and Kirk becoming captain sooner than in the original series (among other things). That isn't a bad thing, infact it probably renewed the franchise and brought it to a diferent level.

I know what you mean, and you might be correct. It's been a while since I've seen it, but my memory is of the different time lines being in different dimensions? In which case there could be parallel time lines running, one with dead dad etc. and one with the universe as we know it.

OK, I must have missed this explanation while watching...

Nero was in the past before the destruction of Romulus and he had plenty of time, decades in fact, to plot his nefarious plans against Vulcan and Earth. So with all of that time and with advanced technology at his disposal, why didn't he work to save Romulus, or at least its population, instead? :confused:

After seeing both movies in the reboot set I've decided that the new Star Trek is not about exploring strange new worlds. At the present two movies its more like The Adventures of James T Kirk. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing. I just hope, for Star Trek sake that any additional movies move away from the story of James T. Kirk and move more in line with new worlds, species and technology.
I watched Star Trek for the technology, discovery and weirdness. It opened my mind to the 'aweness' of the possibilities of space travel. Was never too fond of the personnel backstories.
