Roberto Orci: Star Trek 2 Won't Follow Transformers 2 Formula [Exclusive]

We cornered Roberto Orci last weekend and asked him whether the second Star Trek would follow the same pattern as Transformers 2: the hero refuses the call to heroism. He explained why Trek will be different, and talked Fringe.

We caught up with Orci on the red carpet at the SyFy/Entertainment Weekly party, last Saturday evening, and we had a lot of questions for him.

First of all, we asked Orci about his statements the other day that Star Trek 2 and 3 might have a linked storyline - maybe with a cliffhanger, or a plot thread that continues from one movie into the next. Orci downplayed the speculation, saying he, writer Alex Kurtzman, director J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof and producer Bryan Burk had had one meeting, lasting 15 minutes, and they had considered for a brief moment the idea of doing the next two movies as a linked story. But it's still way too early to say anything definite, and they're still in the phase of throwing ideas out there and seeing what sticks.

When we interviewed Orci and his writing partner, Alex Kurtzman, about Transformers 2, they pointed out that it's very common for the second movie in a series to feature the protagonist trying to quit the "hero" racket. (Think Superman II or Spider-Man 2.) Transformers 2 follows that pattern, with Sam wanting to go off to college and lead a normal life. So we were wondering if Star Trek 2 would follow that formula as well - would we see Kirk thinking about quitting the Enterprise and going back to Iowa?

But Orci says the formula isn't iron-clad, and it doesn't apply to every second movie in a series. In the case of Trek, he sees the Enterprise crew as being much more committed to their mission and to doing good in the universe, so that kind of "hero no more" story wouldn't fit.

Meanwhile, Orci says that the Fringe writing staff had originally wanted to wait a few years before unveiling the "alternate world" storyline - but doing it now forces them to be more inventive about what happens next, and to create an even larger world to explore. "Let us force ourselves to come up with a bigger world. So you get a little bit of both. We wanted to answer things and see where that leads.

As for Cowboys And Aliens, the movie with the world's most self-explanatory title, Orci says, "We're wrapping up another draft, and hopefully that one will be good enough."

I'm probably stepping onto thin ice here, but this is worth mentioning only for fun, not for real news. Sci-fi site io9 caught up with screenwriter Roberto Orci on the red carpet of the Entertainment Weekly party at Comic-Con (which I was also at). Their brief conversation focused slightly on Transformers 2, then jumped to Star Trek 2. As was announced previously, Orci and writing partner Alex Kurtzman are writing the sequel to J.J. Abrams' Star Trek. They also wrote Transformers 2, which despite earning $382 million at the box office, hasn't settled well with critics or fans. But you don't have to worry, Star Trek 2 will be very different.
"Star Trek 2 is different in that you have a crew that's committed to what they're doing, and so that's going to lead you to different kinds of storytelling. These people are not reluctant heroes, they're hoping to get out there and do what's right."
What I'm trying to say here is that you shouldn't be so worried about Kurtzman and Orci writing the Trek sequel. If you're one of those people who didn't like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen at all, but loved Star Trek, and are now worried about Star Trek 2 because of Transformers, well, don't be worried! It's a completely different franchise and, even at the base, is an entirely different kind of story, as Orci said. If anything, this just proves how versatile Kurtzman and Orci can be. And how much influence a director like Michael Bay has on the story in the end. I'm still very excited to see what they'll cook up for us in Trek 2!

A few pics that were posted online from the set. Looks like the Vulcan nerve pinch didn't work out too well for Spock this time round:

I'm looking forward to this movie. I liked the other reboot. It was a very good movie. It might have been lacking some logic (cadet to captain in one movie) and was quite light on the ideals of the Federation, but it was nevertheless a fun viewing experience. Which is the most important thing for a movie.

Yes, I too am looking forward to the next Star Trek movie with the younger versions of Kirk, Spock, and the others. They did a great job casting the Star Trek reboot! I was amazed at that alone, but the story was really good too.

J.J. Abrams is furious about these pics getting out. Saldana, (who plays Uhura) told MTV News, "J.J. was very upset. I have to say that. It's not going to stop people from intruding, but they are, and it's such a bummer because it only hurts them by stealing away the surprise."

Quinto , who plays Spock, says, "That was not an actual scene that will be featured. The cameras weren't even rolling so... imagine what it'll look like when we're actually doing it. That happens, I guess. We're on incredibly big set pieces in the middle of somewhere and people sort of got wind of it."

You can't stop the signal Abrams! I wonder if the fight means Cumberbatch's a villain or just a misunderstanding like the fight he had with Kirk.

A new STAR TREK movie! YEAH BABY! (As Bruce Campbell would say)

I don't want to watch any trailers or hear a word about the film, except how many people liked or didn't like it. I love surprises! :D

Saw a trailer for this one. So excited to see that Benedict Cumberland will be playing the villain. Calendar will be marked for this one.

A fleet of quadcopters recently flew in London to mark the the imminent launch of Star Trek: Into Darkness. A flight team from Ars Electronica Futurelab flew 30 AscTec Hummingbirds with LED lights on them during the mostly dark time of Earth Hour to create a 300-foot high Star Trek logo over Tower Bridge. The city of London plays a major role in the movie. Video is below.

An argument against the rebooted ST? On a different site that I visit (which has nothing to do with sci-fi or movies  ) a conversation came up about the rebooted Star Trek franchise. The debate that erupted soon came to those who liked or did not like the JJ Abrams take on the mythos. One poster in particular did not care for the rebooted universe and was able to clarify exactly why not.

His post is a bit long but is worth reading, especially in light of JJ Abrams making the jump to Star Wars which means the two Abrams movies might be the last in which he has a heavy influence leaving the door open for another reboot down the line.

Reprinted with permission is his thoughts on the matter. Is he right on the money with his negatives or just a hard to please fan of the original Star Trek material?

Ok, you get my full review of ST11:

1) There was strange attention paid to the fact that everything is different now. It was as if everyone knew what their lives would have been in the unaltered universe and they know they have been changed in contrast to that. It was necessary to relay the concept of the alternate universe to the audience, but the delivery was really awkward. It's like they couldn't think of a way to demonstrate the concept so they just came out and said it.

2) An emotional Spock with a girlfriend? That is totally inconsistent with the Spock character. It is as if the Spock from the alternate universe decided to side with his humanity unlike the original Spock. This is unfortunate because the Spock character was originally designed to provide a dispassionate and rational perspective. Now there is no such character. As a result the crew is very one dimensional.

3) While most of the Trek universe has made passing references to the rebelliousness of youth, this movie was nothing but, and for that reason it was awkward. The movie lacked the maturity that I have come to expect from Star Trek.

4) Not counting the abortion that was Nemesis, this is the first Trek movie to have no redeeming sociopolitical message. The best message I was able to extract from the movie is that we should all strive to serve something higher than ourselves. It was pretty generic. The movie also lacked the feelings of hope and wonder that underlie most Trek.

5) The villain was very one dimensional. Needed much more development.

6) Plot holes galore. There were so many unexplained things in the movie... which isn't necessarily a bad thing except that the unexplained things had inconsistencies and holes in themselves which begs an explanation.

7) Lots of bad plot devices that made no sense. It's like the writers had a bunch of cool scenes in mind which they patched together with very little effort.

8) There was no development for the Uhura / Spock relationship. As far as I could tell it was a relationship based on sympathy which turned physical. Pretty disappointing.

9) There were a lot of token alien races with no introduction or background which is unusual in Star Trek. It felt more like Star Wars in that sense.

10) Sarek would never openly admit his feelings. But even if you dismiss the history of his character, the open admission of love is completely at odds with his vulcan nature. And Sarek is 100% vulcan so he has no excuse.

Vulcans in this universe are portrayed as closet humans in a way which is unfortunate and lacking dimension.

11) You can't transport from Titan to Earth. Anyone who knows their trek knows that the maximum transport range is 40,000 kilometers. The distance between Titan and Earth is approximately 1.2 billion kilometers. Said plainly, you can't transport between planets because they are too far apart. You need to be in orbit.

Hardcore treks might recall the concept of subspace transporters which have much longer range, but that technology isn't even perfected in the TNG time frame. Nope, this can't be explained away within the established technology of the trek universe.

12) I am troubled by how Vulcans are represented in the latest movie. My two main gripes are with Spock and Sarek.

The Spock in this alternate universe is very emotional and he even has a girlfriend. It is as if this alternate Spock chose to side with his humanity unlike the original Spock. This is a valid choice considering he's half human, but it's an unfortunate choice because it takes away an import dimension from the crew of the Enterprise. Now there is no character to provide a dispassionate and logical perspective which is what the Spock character was originally designed for. For me this makes the crew very one dimensional. They are all varying degrees of human now... young impetuous humans at that.

The new Sarek was a complete departure. Sarek is one of the most logical and respected Vulcans in the Trek universe. And of course he is 100% Vulcan so he has no human side like Spock does. But in the movie we have Sarek admitting feelings of love for his wife. Sarek would never do this. But even if we ignore the history of his character in the first Trek universe, his admission of love flies in the face of his Vulcan heritage.

The Vulcans in this alternate universe are being portrayed as "closet humans." This isn't an invalid choice on the part of the writers, but it's a huge departure for the Trek universe and it takes away an important dimension of the universe in my opinion.

13) The crew in star trek 11 doesn't seem to have any real desire to go out into space. There is no sense of wonder and awe at exploring the unknowns of space which is an overarching theme that is constant throughout most of star trek (except DS9).

The only two characters who have any semblance of motivation are Kirk and Spock. Kirk is there out of a sense of duty and ego after having been goaded by Pike. Spock is also there out of ego after his little spat with the Vulcan science academy. I suppose ego is better than no reason at all.

NASA Trailer To Be Shown Before Star Trek: Into Darkness (via Slashdot.org)

Tired of seeing ads for cars and soda before the films you watch at the theater? Well, a successful crowd funding campaign at Indiegogo will see a trimmed down version of NASA's 'We Are Explorers' video aired before showings of the upcoming Star Trek: Into Darkness in theaters all over the country. "Most people recognize space as a key expression of our character. They know our space programs as a globally recognized brand of ingenuity. The recently landed Mars Curiosity Rover was the latest reminder that space systems are the crown jewels of our scientific and technical prowess. Less known is the indispensable value space systems bring to our everyday lives. Space provides irreplaceable capabilities for defense, public health, finance, medicine, energy, agriculture, transportation, development and countless other fields. Investments in space programs are precisely about improving and protecting life on Earth. ... By funding this campaign, we can remind students and the general public that our nation's space agency is working hard on the next era of exploration." The campaign's funding goal was reached in just six days — their stretch goal will increase the number of theaters for the clip from 59 screens to 750. The movie comes out on May 17th.

Newest trailer released, looking good. Any theories on which ship that is shown at the 1:15 mark?

I wouldn't class myself as a huge Trekkie, but I loved the first movie they did with this cast and, since I don't get out to the cinema, I can't wait for the DVD release of this on Monday!
