"Did you know?" She asked him, tears swealling in her eyes. "Did you know that they were going to do this to him?" Her body and breath trembled as she waited for his answer.
His face was the way it always is. Stone, with no emotion. he hesitated before answering. "Yes."
She slashed her hand hard against his face. The crack of slapping skin rang loud in the room, and in her ears. He slowly turned his head back to face her. Still no emotion.
Tears trickled down her face. Her lower lip trembled. She glared at him with red and puffy eyes. "How could you? You knew yet you did nothing!" She inhaled sharply and shook her head. Two sobs escaped her. "You know he's important to me, you know that I'd do anything for him." She paused and let out a few more sobs. "You know that I love him." She whispered. she shook her head and more tears fell. "How could you?"
His stone face broke the slightest bit. His dark eyes glistened and his lips parted. "I wanted, to help him, Sydney." His voice had a certain sadness. It was quiet, shaky. And he looked truly pained. For her, or for Vaughn she didn't know, but pained. "But I couldn't. I tried. But," Slowly, sadly he shook his head. "But I couldn't."
Sydney's tears errupted again, and her body shook more violently with sobs. Slowly, she leaned into him, hiding her face on his shoulder. She gripped his suitcoat until her knuckles were red. Her sobs made his body tremble with hers.
"I love him dad." She said, her voice muffled and quiet.
He held her tight. "I know Sydney. I know."

Chapter 1
~~~~~~~~
Vaughn ran a hand through his hair as he stepped into his car. He sat in his seat, staring into the empty world. He couldn't believe what had happened. It was like something he would have dreamed. But it was real, and it happened. That's why it was so amazing.
He actually asked Sydney out to dinner. She actually said yes, which he still couldn't get over. They had gone, spent hours just talking. And then it happened. They were caught, interuppted by Ariana Kane's agents. It would have been absolutely perfect if that hadn't happened.
He sighed as he started the engine. They'd never have that chance again. Not until SD-6 is gone anyway. And even if they do get that chance again, he won't take it. He wouldn't put Sydney in danger again.
But she could already be in danger. More so than before. She was with him, Michael Vaughn, officer of the CIA. And Kane knew. It could blow Sydney's cover. He had to talk to her.
Vaughn pulled up into his driveway. Dragging his briefcase along with him. He fumbled with his keys, searching for the right one. Once he found it, he shoved it into the keyhole and unlocked his door.
He dropped his suitcase onto the counter, along with his keys. He wearily walked into his dark livingroom. He switched on the light, and nearly jumped across the room. Startled, he stumbled back. Panic clogged his throat as he stared at the barrel of a gun.
"Mr. Vaughn." The stranger greeted. "You'll be coming with me."
* * *
Sydney walked into the CIA, still lost in her world. She hadn't been able to sleep at all. The excitement that flowed through her when Vaughn asked her to dinner, was still there. She smiled every time the key and room being offered to them replayed in her mind. She wondered, if Kane's agents hadn't shown up, what would've happened?
She imedietly cut off those thoughts when she noticed her father approaching her. "Hey, what's going on?" She raised her eyebrows as she asked him the question.
"Did you give the jyroscope to Sloane?" His tone was completely buisness, as was his face.
Sydney nodded. "Yeah, I did."
Jack just stared at her for a minute. His eyes flickered, and the faintest pain shadowed them. That look, she's never seen it before. It bewildered her.
"Good." Then he gave her one last look before walking away.
Sydney stood were she was, watching her father. That look in his eyes, she didn't understand it. What was it for? It was not something people see in him. It intrigued her.
She was pulled from her puzzlement by Wiess. "Hey, have you spoken with Vaughn, or seen him since last night?" His features were creased with concern.
Sydney shook her head. "No, I haven't. Why, is something wrong?"
Wiess looked around, his eyes searching, leaping from person to person. "He hasn't come in at all today." He said quietly. "I tried calling him, but he didn't answer."
She parted her lips, fear sparking in her. "That's weird. He's usually here by now." She looked at her watch.
Wiess' eyebrows pushed the skin on his forehead up. "He's usually here by two hours ago."
Slightly appalled, she licked her lips. This was very odd, Vaughn was very punctual. It was unlike him to be late, especailly this late.
"I'm sure it's nothing." Sydney said, trying to convince herself more than Wiess. He looked doubtful. "Let me know if he turns up."
* * *
"Leave Sydney alone for now." Ariana told Sloane. "First, we should interrogate this, Vaughn."
Sloane glared at her. "He's CIA. That means Sydney could be too. I don't want her still running around!"
"Listen to me." Kane said, leaning on his desk. "I'm an expert at this. I know what I'm doing."
Sloane let his disagreement out in a sigh. "Fine. But if I don't have something aceptable in forty-eight hours, I'll take action."
Kane smiled. "You won't regrett it Arvin."
* * *
"Do you know what's going on with Sloane?" Dixon asked Sydney.
She looked at him confused. "What do you mean?"
"He's been locked in his office all day." Dixon told her. She looked over at Sloane's office. He sat in his chair, speaking into his phone. Frustration making him look uglier and more menacing.
"He hasn't come out. He hasn't let anyone in but Kane." Dixon continued. Sydney just continued staring at Sloane, trying to think of anything that could be going on. Dixon sat at his desk. "Maybe it has to do with our new asset."
Sydney whirrled aroud, that comment alerting her. She looked hard at Dixon. "What new asset?"
"I don't know. Some agent from another agency." He answered as if it didn't matter. Like he didn't think much of it.
But Sydney had to know, she wanted to know. Who is this agent? From what agency, and why? She didn't know if approaching Sloane himself would be a good idea. If she could even get in to see him. She knew just the person to talk to.
* * *
She was, again struck by bewilderment. His eyes had flickered with that light when he saw her. She just couldn't understand why he looked like that. What was going on?
Sydney pulled her hand from her pocket to put her hair behind her ear. She stared at her father, the light was gone and he was his usual self. She took in a deep breath.
"There's word, at SD-6, that Sloane has a new asset in custody." Sydney began.
"Yes I know." Jack cut in, almost too quickly.
She looked at him, trying to read him. This new, behavior, look, this new difference about it, it bothered her.
"What do you know about it?" She questioned carefully.
Jack hesitated. "As much as you know." There was a silence as they stared at each other. And then she saw it, that flicker of light in his eyes again. "Sloane has been in his office for hours. Talking to no one."
She studied her father. "Everyone but Kance." His features didn't change. "He's up to something dad. It's vital that we find out."
He shook his head. "I wouldn't worry too much about it."
She looked at him shocked yet demanding. "What are you talking about? Sloane has an agent from someother agency! And he's shunning himself from everyone but Kane!" Her stomach knotted at seeing his eyes changed for a split second once again. He opened his mouth to protest. "Dad! He's up to something."
Sydney waited for a reply from her father. It was odd how he didn't agree on this. He would have to have a reason. Why was keeping the reason away from her?
Jack looked hard at her, almost glaring a warning. "I don't suggest you look into it." He turned away from her and got in his car.
* * *
Sydney snatched her phone up from her car seat. "Hello?"
She got this sinking feeling when she didn't hear Vaughn's voice, but Wiess instead. "Have you heard from Vaughn yet?"
The lump in her throat tightened. "No." She answered sadly. "I was hoping that you had."
Wiess sighed. "Nothing."
She looked at her watch again. "Wiess, I'm getting worried. This is not like Vaughn at all."
"I know." Wiess agreed. "But I don't know what on earth he'd be doing. He can't go a day without coming to work."
If this wasn't Vaughn they were talking about, she would've smiled. She was really worried. People don't just vanish like this. She got an idea. "Where does he live?"
* * *
Sydney looked up, just staring. She had always wondered what Vaughn's place looked like. Now she would know.
Excited and nervous at the same time, she walked up to the door. Hesitantly, she reached out and knocked on the door, and waited. His car was in the driveway, he must be here. Fear started to swirl in her head with every second that went by. No answer. She rang the bell and again, waited. No answer.
She took out her phone and dailed his number. It rang, and rang, and rang. Her panic was raising. He always had his voicemail on. So why wasn't it now?
She put her phone away and started to look for a way in. She had to get in. She had to find out what was going on. She knew the door would be locked, but she grabbed the doorknob and wiggled it. To her surprise, it opened.
That was just too weird. Cautiously, she stepped inside. He had a nice place. She liked it. Then she saw something else weird.
Vaughn's keys and briefcase were on the counter. And one light was on. Nothing else seemed out of the ordinary. She slowly walked down the hall, checking every room. "Vaughn?" Completely quiet.
She came back into the livingroom and just observed it. She just didn't understand. Where could he be? And why? She started to panic. She had to find him. Somehow.
She went back to the bedroom. His bed was smooth, unwrinkled...not slept in. The shower towels were dry, the sink was dry. No dirty dishes. Nothing had been used in the past day. Except the lamp that was on in the livingroom.
She couldn't pick it out. There was something here, she just couldn't see it. What was it? The lamp was the only thing that had been recently used.
Sydney didn't know what to make of it. Vaughn was obviously gone. Panic ran down her spine, and formed a pit in her stomach. Vaughn was gone.
* * *
"Do you have anything yet?" Sloane asked through the phone line.
"No." Kane replied. "No matter what we did to him, he wouldn't say a word."
"If he had nothing to do with her he would have said so." Sloane told her. "It's obvious he's trying to protect her by not saying anything."
"Maybe. I know how you feel Arvin, but if we jump to conclusions, it could be a vital mistake."
"You have thirty-six hours remaining." Sloane informed her. "Break him."
So, that's chapter 1. What do you think of it so far? Chapter 2 is in progress.
