Chapter 2-Part 2
~~~~~~~~~
"Okay." Irina put her hair behind her ears. "What, exactly, did you see at his house?"
Sydney had a clear picture in her mind. She took a deep breath, putting herself back in the room. "His car was in the driveway, his door was unlocked. When I went in, his briefcase and keys were on the counter. And one lamp in the living room was on." She looked up at her mother, her face hard as stone. "Nothing else in the house had been used recently."
Her mother looked thoughtful. "Nothing. As in...?"
"The towels were dry, the bed untouched." Sydney began to explain. "No dishes were in the sink or dishwasher. Nothing."
Irina squinted her eyes in thought. "So nothing has been used in the past day." She had a blank expression as she sat silent. "When was the last time you had contact with him?"
"Yesterday." Sydney remarked. "Last night rather. Before I left work."
"So he must've been abducted last night when he got home from work." Derevko analyzed, thoughtfully rubbing her fingers together. "So he's been gone for eighteen hours." She looked up at Sydney. "Can you get me photographs of his house?"
Sydney's hear nearly erupted from her mouth when she saw another car in Vaughn's driveway. She parked at a distance and carefully made her way to the front door. She pressed her ear to the door and listened. She heared footsteps, soft, small. And a voice, a female voice. "Michael?" Sydney's heart grew heavey with the realization of who it was.
She opened the door and stepped inside, the women spun around, fear and hope in her eyes. Alice. "Rita?" She asked shocked, her mouth hanging open. "What are you doing here?"
Sydney looked around, as far as she could see, nothing had been touched. She looked back to Alice, and glanced at Vaughn's briefcase. Untouched, thank god. "Vaughn's on a buisness trip. He asked me to be his housekeeper until he gets back."
Alice looked taken a-back. She dropped her head. "Oh...Well, why is all his stuff here?" She pointed to the counter.
"It was last minute." Sydney replied. Alice looked back at Sydney, sorrow in her eyes.
She looked down again. "Well then, I'd leave yout to..." She paused, looking hurt. "...Do your stuff." She smiled faintly at Sydney.
Sydney felt a little bad. Apparently, Alice had gotten the wrong picture. But truthfully, Sydney didn't mind. It was nice to think of it that way. She heared Alice's heals clicking down the driveway.
"Wait!" Sydney called, spinning around. Alice stopped and quickly wipped at her face. She turned and looked at Sydney with a bit of a red face. "Did you touch anything?"
Alice's face crumbled in confusion. "What? What are you talking about?"
Sydney shook her head. "Nothing, nevermind."
Alice gave Sydney a glare before turning away disgusted.
Sydney closed the door and made a thorough examination of Vaughn's place. Her heart lightened and her stomach untwisted, releaved. Nothing had been touched. She brought the camera up to her eyes.
"Sydney!" She stopped and turned. She waited as Wiess caught up to her. "So, anything new on Vaughn?"
She glanced around. "I'm having my mother help me."
Wiess almost jumped. "Derevko?"
"She's helping me brainstorm. I took pictures of Vaughn's place. I'm going to see her now." She whispered quietly. "Wiess, you can't tell anyone about this."
He nodded. "Of course."
"By the way." Sydney added, just turning to leave. "You might want to talk to Alice. She seemed suspicious."
Wiess raised his eyebrows in alarm. "She was there?"
Sydney nodded. "Looking for Vaughn. I told her he's on a last minute buisness trip. You should probably call her. Just to reinforce that."
Wiess nodded. "Sure."
Derevko traced her bottom lip as she carefully studied each picture. Sydney waited impaitently. Finally, Irina lowered the photos. "It is strange. I can see what you mean by unused. And the lamp..." She trailed off as she held up the picture of the lamp, examining it. "Have you looked for fingerprints, or shoe prints?"
Sydney shook her head. "No one knows."
Irina glanced at the camera. "I think that'll change." Sydney nodded, understanding. Irina looked straight at Sydney. "I suggest you make an analysis of the front room."
"Why didn't you inform me about this earlier?" Kendall asked angerly.
"I thought you'd know. Don't you keep track of your agents?" Sydney said sarcastically.
Kendall glared at her momentarily. "What do you expect to get out of this?"
"I hope to find out who kidnapped Vaughn!" Sydney explained, her voice raising.
"How do you even know he's been kidnapped?" Kendall yelled back. "He could have left on his own!"
"Why the hell would he do that?" Sydney asked in disbelief. "And besides, his house-"
"Agent Bristow, Agent Vaughn is an agent of the CIA." Kendall said matter-of-factly. "If he wanted to make it look like he disappeared, he could."
"He did not leave, he was abducted." Sydney told him through clenched teeth.
"And you know this how?" Kendall asked.
She was about to explode with anger and frustration. She leaned towared him and gave him a cold glare. "I just know."
Sydney sighed deeply as she plopped onto her bed. Her day had been too stressful. Every day was, but Vaughn's presence usually greatly lessened it. She missed him, so much she wanted to scream until her head hurt. She had nothing from him to remember him by but his sweet picture in her mind. And the picture frame.
She sat up and reached for the beautiful antique. Gently, she cradled it in her hands. She treasured it. This was all she had. It was her most prized possesion. It was precious to her.
As she traced the designs with her finger, all the times she had been with, or talked to Vaughn came to memory. Each one, playing like a movie inside her head. She started to cry and bit her lip.
She wished that he was here now. She wanted to be able to see him, hear him. Touch is handsome, sharp face. Run her hand through his dark hair. She had never been able to hold his face or play with his hair, even though she had always wanted to. Now she wanted to more than ever.
She was afraid to go to sleep, if she could. Afraid taht her dreams would turned into nightmares. Or that she'd have a beautiful dream, of being with him. And wake up to be alone, and he'd still be gone. She didn't want to sleep. And she couldn't.
Pain. That's all her felt. Both physically and mentally. His entire body throbbed. And his breathing was short and haggard. Every breath took immense effort. It hurt to breath.
The only thing that kept him intact was Sydney. All his his memories of her, her voice, her smile. And the hope of seeing her once again. And telling her that he loved her. That kept him alive.
He didn't move when the door hinges creaked loudly. But his head swirled and his body throbbed more. No more. Please!
This time, it was not the cold slap of Kane's high heels. But what he saw put him in shock. He just stared, bewildered, as the man approached him.
"I'm sorry that this happened." He said quietly, looking over Vaughn's crippled body. "I tried to prevent it, but Sloane wouldn't listen to me." There was a short silence. "I'm still doing what I can to get you out, and to keep Sloane from acting on Syney." Vaughn's eyes flickered at Sydney's name. "You should know, she's searching for you."
So she didn't know. She didn't know where he was. Why didn't his visitor tell her?
He turned to leave. Vaughn, despite the pain, called out. "Jack!" Sydney's father looked back at Vaughn. Vaughn hesitated, before asking his question. "Why doesn't she know?"
Jack stood silent, thinking. "How would she? Sloane wouldn't tell her, he suspects her of being CIA." Vaughn's heart jumped. "And I won't tell her because..." He looked hard at Vaughn. "I have my reasons."
Vaughn was too exhausted to argue. "So what does she know?"
"All she know's is, you're gone. You've disappeared. But she's looking." He left Vaughn in more pain than before. In the darkness.
