The Rainbow

Hey peoples. This is my first 'Alias' fic and my first fic of any kind for quite a while. Hope ya like it, let me know. Also, I am from Australia and we have only seen the 1st season so all I know of the 2nd season is what I have read so sorry if there are any holes. As always, I don't own any of these characters, just borrowing them. Enjoy!

A turn of the key and the door was unlocked. Sydney wearily stepped into the darkened living room, and immediately reached for the light switch on the wall alongside the doorway. The room was immediately illuminated to reveal a modest but cosy living with no signs of life. She was alone.

Franice was probably busy at her restaurant and God knows where Will was. Sydney walked across the room and into the ajoining room that is her bedroom. Wearily kicking off her shoes Sydeny headed straight for the bathroom to run a hot bath to soak away the day. As the bath rapidly filled half a bottle of wine and a glass was retreved from the kitchen and with that she retreated to the serenity of soap suds.

Emerging an hour later with an empty wine bottle, Sydney was still alone. She was restless, yearning for some other vioce, some other noise other than the pitter patter of her feet on the plush carpet and the distant chime of the clock in the living room. There was a time where Sydney loved nights like this. To be alone and reflect on her day, just her and her thoughts. But increasingly she dreaded these solitary moments, reflecting on her day. She wished she could just run away from it all, just go home and forget. Life used to be a lot simplier. She had a routine, a pattern, everythign was simple and carefree. There was no worrying about the future or what the next day held, she used to think things would take care of themselves and it would all be ok. But that idealistic dreaming all ended one night with a few gun shots in the bathroom.

Sydney shook her head and tried to get the thought of Danny out of her head. You see that's what happens when she was alone. She began to remember but she wanted to forget, for now anyway, she just wanted peace in her mind. To let go, for everything to be ok, just for a while. But her mind was always racing, always worrying, always on guard. It never ends.

Sydney wandered over to the TV on the far side of the room and switched it on. She didn;t really care what was on but the sound of the TV broke the silence and gave her something else to focus on. FOr a while she just lay on her bed and and watched the screen without really watching. She longed for someone to talk. Too many nights were spent watching the TV for companionship rather than entertainment. She loved Francie and Will, no doubt about that but what she had with them wasn't real. the real contact she longed for. Francie had no idea what really went on in Sydney's world and so when she talked to Francie she could never really talk to Francie, to pour her heart out like she had longed to do so many times. And Will, he finally learnyt her secret but she despised the way he looked at her now. As if she was a complete stranger and in many ways she was. That look of admiration and adoration that crossed Will's face when he looked at her was no longer there but was now replaced with another look she couldn't describe, but it was a look as if he was looking at her as if for the first time. Still she could never let him get close, he was too close already, she was no longer just his friend but now his protector, and the person that ruined his career. Because of her, he lost everything he had worked for and she would never forgive herself for that.

But there was one. One who knew and understood. One who she could pour her heart too. Share her fears and anxieties, because he shared them too. With this thought she unconsciously looked over to her bed side table and the frame Michael had given her. It was always Michael in her head, not 'Vaughn'. She longed for him to be there with her at this very moment, to share this quiet night with her. What they had was as real as Sydney could get. The only thing they hid from each other was their true feelings for each other. They had discussed this briefly but their personal relationship played second fiddle to their professional realtionship, like most things in her life. Yet, it was there and it was real, even if it was not expressed fully. She didn't have to pretend with Michael because deep down she knew he felt the same way as her.

And then a worrying thought came to her. Something she dared not think about yet it had been gnawing at her for quite a while. She had a crush on Michael, quite possibly loved him. Yes, she did in fact love him but this worried her. Sydney was a romantic and truly believed there was one person for everyone. But then what did that make Danny? She loved him too. Was Michael the one person she was meant to love for the rest of her life or had she missed that chance with Danny? Or was it possible that a woman could love a number of men in her life and there was no 'the one'. She thought back to a book she studied in high school, 'The Rainbow'. The Rainbow symbolised the coming together of man and woman and threw up the idea that it was possoble to love more than one man. She had been the only person in her English class to confess that she believed there was only one. She was laughed for having such a hopeless romantic view of the world.

Was it fate she met Michael the way she did? Was she supposed to lose Danny so she could realise the love of her life when she did meet him, when she met Michael? Did the pain of losing Danny make her realise and cherish what she had with Michael? Is Michael therefore 'the one'?

Glad u all like it. Read on.

He's different. Sydney wasn't quite sure what set him apart from all the other 'suits' that inahbitated the offices of the CIA. But all Syd knew was there was a serious epidemic of "Little-Man-Syndrome" amngost the rank and file of the CIA. You know, you put a self conscious little know all with a slight inferiority complex into a position of power, slap a suit on him and all reason and intutition goes completely out of the window and all you are left with is a major pain in the butt. Every other agent at the CIA lived and died by one word, "protocol". 'Its not protocol to do this or that yada yada yada'. They sit there behind their desks, relishing the fact that they have their name on the office door and are allowed to carry a loaded weapon and excercise what little power they have at every opportunity completely forgetting the bigger picture. They just weren't......human.

yes that's what set Michael apart. He acted human. He showed qualities and emotions that the others had long ago checked at the door. They didn't care about Sydney. They didn't care that she was all alone. She needed an ally someone on the inside that felt the same as she did and to tell her it was going to be allright. And Michael did that. To the rest Sydney was a pawn, a means to an end, to carry out their little missions and that's it. A trained killer and therefore, she was required to do all that they asked. With no questions asked.

But Michael realised she longed for more. And he was more than willing to giver her that. And somewhere they developed a bond. They both wanted the same thing, to bring SD-6 down. For the madness to end. And sometimes it was hard to keep sight of that but in those times he always seemed to have the right hing to say and in her mind she believed the words he was telling her. It made those days seem bearable. To make the quietness and emptiness of a darkened bedroom at night not so lonely because she knew that in the morning, it would all start up again, that she would be part of something special. A formidable partnership that was trying to be broken but never would be. That would eventually see her through and just maybe they would achieve their goal and find somehting else along the way.
