New Chapter, Finally!!!
Chapter 5
Irritation, mostly with herself, welled up within Sydney as she watched Vaughn stalk out of the cafe. She wanted to scream right then, and curse whatever God there was for allowing her to hurt two of the most wonderful men on earth. Matt immediately sensed the change in her, and he grasped her hand more tightly.
“Not one for talking?” He asked, trying to lighten the mood.
“He left a note,” She whispered. She loosened her hand from his grasp, stood, and walked over to the other table to retrieve the note. She brought it back without opening it, and resumed her seat across from Matt. Slowly she opened it and read its contents. It read:
Elektra-
You haven’t seen your friend in a long time, and I’m sure you have a lot of catching up to do, so I’ll leave you to it. If there’s an emergency, you can contact me at the hotel. Have a nice life.
-Vaughn
Tears welled up in Sydney’s eyes, and Matt heard like thunder booming as her tears hit the table.
“Elektra, what is it? What’s wrong? What did he say?” Matt pleaded worriedly.
“Nothing, Matt, it’s nothing.” Sydney sounded less than convincing as she crumpled the napkin the not was written on into a tiny wad.
“So,” Matt began. Once he realized that Elektra wasn’t going to elaborate on whatever was in the note, he decided that a change of topic was in order. “It’s your first day in New York after God knows how long, what do you have planned?”
“Well, I think I’ll wander around the city a bit, then go back to my apartment and train.” Matt imperceptibly shook his head. It didn’t sound like a very enjoyable day to him, and he knew it probably wouldn’t be for her. What’s worse is that he knew she knew this as well.
“I have to finish preparing a case. The trial is tomorrow at the local courthouse, you’re more than welcome to come.” Matt heard a slight smile in her voice as she responded.
“I’d like that a lot Matthew.” Just then the door to the cafe opened.
“Oh my God!” The newcomer cried out. He ran to the table where Matt and Elektra were sitting. “Elektra? Elektra, is that really you?” Frank Nelson gaped at her. ‘Buddy Boy,’ as Matt sometimes called him, embraced Sydney.
“It’s good to see you again Frank.” She replied as she returned the embrace.
“I called Frank last night after seeing you again. I told him I had met this really wonderful woman, and that I was meeting her this morning for coffee. This being the first time I’ve mentioned a woman since you- left, I knew he’d come and see for himself.” Matt explained, “I didn’t tell him it was you, Elektra.” Upon seeing Frank’s utterly confused expression, he said, “It’s a long story apparently. All you need to know is that it’s really her and that she’s back.”
“Well I’m really glad you’re back and ok, Elektra. It just wasn’t the same without you, and neither was Matt. As Much as I hate to, we’ve got to cut this short. Matt and I have a sh-t load of work to do. We’ll see you soon?” Frank asked.
“Yes, I’m coming to see your trial tomorrow.” Sydney responded kindly. “Let me pay for this, please Matthew. It was my pleasure.” Matthew was going to protest, but a not so inconspicuous jab in the ribs from Frank shut him up. Arguing it would get him nowhere anyway.
“Oh, Elektra?” He said as he rose from his seat. “could you give me your and Mr. Vaughn’s cell phone numbers, you know, just in case?” Matt asked. reluctantly, Sydney scribbled down both her and Vaughn’s cell phone numbers on a napkin, writing Elektra next to hers and Vaughn next to his.
“If there’s a problem of any kind Matthew, please call me. I don’t think Vaughn wants to be bothered right now. I’m back at my old apartment, so you know where I am if you need me.” Matthew nodded as she handed him the napkin.
“All right, will do. Elektra, try to enjoy yourself this afternoon.” Matthew said earnestly as she hugged him goodbye.
“Thanks Matthew,” Sydney gave him a kiss on the cheek, put a little more than enough money on the table, and made her way to the door. She turned and waved to them, then she was gone. A few moments later Matt and Frank also exited the cafe. Matt had walked, so Frank offered him a ride in his car, which Matt accepted. Once in frank’s Metro car, Matt pulled out a crumpled napkin from his pocket and handed it to his best friend.
“What’s this?” Frank questioned.
“Mr. Vaughn left this note for Elektra before stalking out of the cafe. It made her cry, Frank. I want to know what the SOB said that hurt her,” Matt replied through clenched teeth.
“Ah,” Was Frank’s only reply. He then read the note aloud:
“Elektra-
You haven’t seen your friend in a long time, and I’m sure you have a lot of catching up to do, so I’ll leave you to it. If there’s an emergency, you can contact me at the hotel. Have a nice life.
-Vaughn”
Matt pulled the other napkin from his pocket, the one that Elektra had given him with her and vaughn’s cell phone numbers on it. He also pulled out his cell phone.
“Read me the number next to the name Vaughn,” Matt demanded.
“Matt, didn’t you hear what Elektra said? She doesn't want us to bother the guy,” Frank reminded him.
“This is an emergency Frank. She loves this guy, and he’s treating her like felgercarb. Because she enjoyed my company, he got all uptight. He doesn't deserve Elektra, and I think someone needs to tell him so.” Frank just shook his head lightly in response. Matt Murdock was as in love with Elektra as he was the day the two first met.
Frank read the number aloud, and Matt punched it into his cell phone. It rang twice, then a male voice answered.
“Vaughn,” The voice said gruffly.
“Mr. Vaughn,” Matt began, “This is Matt Murdock. You and I need to talk.”
“I’m a little busy right now,” Vaughn replied icily. Even over the phone Matt could tell that he was lying.
“Well Mr. Vaughn, if you care about Elektra at all, you’ll make time.” Matt could sense Vaughn’s heartbeat quicken just at the mention of Elektra’s name.
“Is- is she all right? Has something happened?” *How could this man care about her so much, and yet hurt her so badly?* Matt wondered to himself.
“Mr. Vaughn, I was hoping you could tell me. Whatever you said on that note upset her greatly. This is a discussion to be had in person, not over the telephone.” Matt could hear Vaughn breath a sigh of exasperation.
“Where?” Vaughn asked tiredly. He loved Sydney, he really did. And he thought she loved him. Thought was the keyword. Ever since the reuniting of Sydney and Murdock, he questioned what she truly felt for him.
“At the time I thought he would be my only love.”
Sydney had taken it back as soon as she had said it, but still he was uncertain. Matt’s voice brought him back to reality.
“Meet me in front of the cafe as soon as you can. I know of a place where we can talk without prying ears.” With that Matthew hung up, leaving Vaughn to wonder what this man wanted to say to him, but more importantly, what he had gotten himself into by falling hopelessly in love with Sydney.
Frank stared at Matt for a moment. They were still sitting in his car in the parking lot of the cafe, having never left. Frank had heard only Matt’s side of the conversation, but he could guess what the response on the other end had been.
“It’s a good thing you’re such a great lawyer Matt, because you’re not going back with me to prepare for tomorrow’s trial, are you?” He questioned.
“No, I’m not. I’m sorry Frank, but I’ll be no good to anyone if I don’t take care of this. It’s really getting to me.” Matt explained glumly.
“I understand buddy. Just don’t beat up the guy to badly, ok? You’re supposed to be working a trial tomorrow, not being tried.” Matt laughed at his friend’s concern.
“all right, I promise. Here, let me get out so you can go, I don’t mean to hold you up.”
“No Matt, it’s ok. This time of year can be chilly in the city. I’ll wait so you don’t have to stand outside. PLus, I haven’t seen this guy yet, and you obviously haven’t. I have to be able to help you measure up the competition, you know.” Frank desperately wanted to see his friend happy. Matt had been in a depressed state ever since Elektra died, and not it was as if he was coming back to life with her.
About ten minutes later Matt sensed Vaughn jogging towards the building.
“He’s coming,” Matt announced. A moment later a flustered Vaughn came into view around the corner of the building. Matt knew he was there before Vaughn did.
“That’s him,” He said to Frank. “Tell me you’re official man bashing opinion later at the office. This discussion will be interesting.” With a nod to Frank, Matt got out of the car and approached Vaughn.
“Follow me,” He said, and Vaughn did as he was told. Matt lead him for three blocks, to an abandoned building. He climbed the stairs to the roof and turned to Vaughn, who by this time was slightly winded.
“It’s safe here to speak openly. No one knows about this spot but Elektra and I.” Vaughn’s head snapped up at the mention of Elektra’s name. He didn’t even want to think about the times the two of them must have shared here.
“What did you want to talk to me about?” Vaughn demanded cooly.
“I want to know a few things, and I know that you do too. So let’s start simple, do you love her?” Matt asked, studying Vaughn with his senses. Vaughn was shocked. Why did this man think he was entitled to know how he felt about Sydney?
“What business is that of yours?” Vaughn snapped, not to keen on the idea of being evaluated by Sydney’s old flame. By this time however, Matt’s patience had worn thin.
“What the he** does she see in this guy?” Matt said more to himself than to the man standing across from him.
“Excuse me?” Vaughn spat.
“Look, I don’t know what she sees in you, but Elektra obviously loves you. You don’t deserve her, even I can see that you hurt her. I don’t know how she fell in love with you, but it’s something I plan to amend. I hope you take competition well Mr. Vaughn, because I plan on doing everything in my power to win her back.” Before Vaughn could respond to Matt’s rant, a faint cry came from the distance. Of course what Vaughn heard faintly, Matt heard loud and clear.
“What was that?” Vaughn asked.
“Elektra,” Matt whispered, “And she’s coming this way.”

After leaving the cafe that morning, Sydney planned on walking around the city for a while, like she had told Matthew she was going to. She only had one destination in mind when she set out, and that was Matthew’s apartment. She got there with little trouble, she remembered the route quite well.
The door to his apartment was locked, but it was easy for Sydney to pick. She had mad spy skills after all. His apartment was unique, nothing like a normal New York City home. It was dark and only held the essentials Matthew needed to live. Sydney had liked it because it always seemed to be unaffected by the New York bustle around it. Looking around, taking in all of the sights, smells, and feeling of Matthew, tears sprung to her eyes. Memories came flooding back, a semi- innocent tim of youth and love. Sydney gave herself a mental shake and walked up to one of the walls. It had a secret switch that opened the wall to reveal an area similar in size to a walk in closet. In this hidden room was all of the DareDevil’s equipment. Suits, billy clubs, all the vigilante needed was there. Soon Sydney found what she was looking for. An engraved cherry wood box laid lovingly on the shelves brought back even more memories to Sydney. Tears streamed down her face as she removed the box from its place. The box was not light, but not especially heavy. She laid it on the floor and sat down in front of it. Carefully lifting the lid her eyes fell onto her sais. She had left them behind in New York when she left, a silent promise to herself that someday she would be back for them. She knew Matthew would keep them. Sydney picked them up, closed the box, and left the chamber, closing the entrance behind her. She strode to the part of the apartment that Matthew used as a personal gym, and assumed a fighting stance. Her body remembered the old movements with ease her sais has always been as much a part of her as her own two hands. Nothing was forgotten, it all came flooding back to her. Once satisfied that she was as skilled as when she left, (possibly more so due to her CIA weapons training) Sydney decided it was time to go. She concealed her sais on her person, feeling much better now armed, and locked the door to Matthew’s apartment as she left. She would talk to him about getting a better lock for his door later.
Sydney continued to walk the streets, remembering old haunts, when she felt a presence behind her. She took several confusing turns trying to shake whoever it was, but they were to good to be thrown. Sydney soon grew anxious. She turned down a back street, and once convinced that no one but she and her follower could hear, she called out.
“Who are you and what do you want?” As soon as she had spoken, Sydney heard a throaty laugh coming from above and behind her.
“I just have one question. Why won’t you die?” A husky, accented voice asked. Just then the figure jumped down, and Sydney saw his face. “Didn’t think your boyfriend killed me, did ya?” Bullseye asked, his voice dripping of mockery.
“It just means that I get the pleasure to,” Sydney shot back. She quickly drew her sais and assumed a ready stance.
“Oh, so the pretty lady wants to fight? all right, let’s go.” As soon as he finished, Bullseye lunged at Sydney. They worked their way to the rooftops, Bullseye throwing everything from stones to punches, and Sydney blocking what she could and attacking back. He still managed to grab one of her sais.
“Deja Vu, ain’t it tootse?” He said smugly as he threw the sai at her heart. Sydney managed to move so the sai missed it’s target, but not quickly enough. The sai caught her directly in the center of the right hand. She cried out in pain as the sai punctured through it’s target. This is the cry that Matthew and Vaughn heard. Sydney recovered quickly though, and slowly removed the sai from her hand. She slipped one sai in her belt, and with the other in her good hand,(by this time her wounded hand was all but useless,) gave chase to Bullseye.
“Uh, oh, did I make the lady mad?” He mocked as she hunted him from roof to roof.
*
Matt and Vaughn silently waited for Sydney’s approach, silently hoping that she was all right, and neither expecting to see what they saw, although Matt was more prepared to see it than Vaughn was.
