Sci-Fi Trying to find a story I read, long ago

Treebeard431

The internet tried but I'm finding books again.
Hi...Brand new member of the forum, and I must say, this looks like a very good place to be. I'm hoping there's an old timer or two around, to help me with this search of mine.
The story revolves around a very large, crated machine that was delivered by accident, perhaps across dimensions or time? to a guy. It has an utterly foreign look to it, very sleek and futuristic...(Let me insert here, I do not recall how long ago I read this. I began reading SF 45 years ago, when BEM's and square-jawed heroes were the industry standard for stories. But, I think this was perhaps in the late 60's, early 70's).
So..futuristic look, what lettering there is, is incomprehensible, not in any known language extant on Earth, and by fiddling around with it, he eventually discovers that it's actually a machine that draws, and does it very well. So well, in fact, that as he starts leaking these drawings out to the public, he becomes world famous, like a mega-super superstar.
I won't go into any more detail; that should be enough for anyone who's actually read the story, and if you have not, letting any more detail out would ruin it for you, in the event that you ever get to read it.
Yes, I know you'll be groaning and saying "who wants to read dusty old SF for graybeards". But, truth be told, the old stuff, sans the BEM's and 'space' this and 'space' that (ie, space combs, space cars, space soup) was the best!
So help a graybeard out, ok?
