Unresolved

Over five hundred posts, two stories, and part of my other stories. Oh, wait, I'm starting to think I lost three stories. I think that takes the cake.

Okay, I think this is the next chapter..

"Sydney... Syd, wake up." He reached his right arm over and gently stroked her hair.

"Mom... the cockatrice wants to play," she mumbled, re-adjusting her head and going back to sleep.

"Come on Sydney. You have to go to work today."

"What... Vaughn, are you alright?" she said, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes and looking at him anxiously.

"I thought you never wanted to see me again?"

"And you actually believed me? Come on, I need someone who is willing to listen to all of my problems," she said with a small laugh, looking down at her hands.

"Why the sudden change of heart?" he said, repositioning a little in the uncomfortable hospital bed.

"I... um, well, I kinda opened the box," she said, tucking a piece of stray hair behind her left ear.

"Ah... that. Well, did you like it?" he asked, searching her eyes for the truthful answer he knew she wouldn't give.

"I think it symbolizes something that shouldn't be at this particular moment in time."

"Why do you think that? Because of Alice?"

"Vaughn, I don't want you to cheat on her. She still thinks I'm her friend, and even though I'm not her best friend, I just feel like I would betray her."

"Don't you remember? I told you, we broke up two days- wait, what's the date today?"

"It's Saturday."

"February 15?"

"Yep. Guess I spent Valentine's day with you after all. This isn't exactly how I pictured it, but it will have to do." She looked down at the floor, gathering her things and making for the door. His hand caught hers, however, and their eyes locked.

"You... pictured us spending Valentine's day together?"

"Maybe I did. But there's a lot of things I pictured that have never come true, so don't get your hopes up." She turned without another word and swept soundlessly out the door. He sat there, crying inside, heart breaking piece by piece.

Out in the hallway, Sydney stopped and leaned against the wall for a moment. Just like that, everything she had been holding inside of her was let go like a dam breaking loose, and she sank to the floor.

"Sydney? Are you alright? Sydney, talk to me." Jack shook her a little, but she just continued to cry.

"Sydney! What is wrong?" he said, squatting down next to her and placing his hands on her shoulders.

"He... I... oh, Dad, how--how-- how could I let this happen?" she cried, letting herself fall into his arms. Somehow he was able to guide her into the waiting room and into a chair.

"How could you let what happen? Sydney, what is going on?" he said, a slight hint of urgency in his voice.

"I... oh my god, I think I'm--I'm-- Dad, I think I'm in love with Vaughn."

The silence followed by these stuttered words hung heavy with dread. Jack wiped his hand over his brow and collapsed into the chair next to Sydney's.

"Sydney... are you sure?"

"I don't know. I just fought with the man, so right now my emotions are slightly skewed. What do you think?" she said, turning her red eyes towards him with a mixture of sadness, anger, and frustration.

"We've all known for a long time this was coming, Sydney. However, none of us thought it would ever happen."

"Why not?"

"Because I believed in my heart you two would not be professionals if there was a relationship."

"You're right."

"What?"

"I said, you're right." Jack Bristow was utterly amazed. There were very few times when his daughter completely agreed with him, and to his utter shock, this was one of them.

"I'm glad we agree. Now that we have gotten past this- there's been new information."

"What? Why wasn't I called?" she said, trying to get past her grief over Vaughn.

"We couldn't - hold on." He pulled out a pen and pulled the cap off. It beeped, and then he continued. "We couldn't find you. We called your house, Francie's restaurant, Sloane's house, anywhere we could think of."

"What's the new development?"

"There seems to be another server- server 47. It contains vital information regarding the Alliance as a whole."

"So- are you saying this could be the silver bullet to the end of the Alliance?"

"Yes. However, Kendall doesn't want to believe it. We need to go in and match up at least one of the codes with a code at SD-6. But-" he said, holding up his hand as she was about to open her mouth and speak "- Sloane's taken a hit out on you. Shortly after he took it out he disappeared. That doesn't mean people won't be looking for you. I came here to bring you back to headquarters."

"Then how will we access the codes?"

"I'll do it. As long as I go about my normal routine, I won't be suspected. We just need to keep you out of harm's way. And Vaughn."

"What?"

"Sydney, we need to get him out of here. If SD-6 gets word that a vital CIA agent is being held here, they will waste no time in getting to him. Understand?" She nodded, rubbed her eyes, and stood up.

"Sydney, what's that?" he said, pointing to the velvet box she had been clutching the entire time.

"It's- it's a goodbye present."

"What does that mean?"

"It means I'm saying goodbye to something that just said hello."

I'm pretty sure this was the next chap, but if it's not, could someone please let me know?

~Me :angel2:

That was actually an old chap. I've got another one, but I'm just too lazy to post it right now, so it'll go up later.

"Agent Vaughn, we're getting you out of here," Jack said, followed closely by Sydney. Her head was down and her eyes were pointed towards the ground.

"I- I don't understand. What's going on?" Vaughn said, searching Sydney for some kind of answer. She, however, refused to look at him.

"We've gotten new intel that has put SD-6 in serious jeopardy. We need to get you to headquarters so they can't find you."

"Alright. Just let me get my clothes on."

"No time. I've got some in the car. Let's go." Sydney stuck her head out the door to make sure no one was around. Strangely, the hallway had been deserted. She was in too much of a hurry to worry about that at the moment, though. Her head wouldn't stop buzzing with thoughts of Vaughn, so she tried to concentrate on the task at hand.

"It's all clear. Come on." They hurried out into the hallway, rushing towards the elevator.

"You... pictured us spending Valentine's day together?"

Sydney shook her head and tried to get the thought out of her mind. There was no way a relationship between them could ever work, so why should she even be wasting her time thinking about it?

"Sydney, did you hear me? I said hurry, I only cut security on this level for half an hour. Move!" Jack barked at her, making her jump a foot before she realized she wasn't moving.

"Syd, your dad's right. We have to go. Just put your thoughts aside and go into spy mode, alright?" Vaughn looked at her pleadingly, glancing back and forth between her and the elevator.

"Get away from me!" she yelled, backing away from him and sprinting towards the fire exit.

“Sydney!” Vaughn tried to go after her, but she was too fast and with his arm in a sling he knew he would never catch her.

“Let’s move, Agent!” Jack pulled him into the open elevator and pounded the garage button.

Buzz

“Alright, what is going on between you two? What did you do?” he growled, making Vaughn squirm uneasily. He did get some confidence, though, and looked Jack in the eye.

“Why don’t you ask your daughter since she is obviously the source of both of our headaches at this particular moment in time?”

“I can’t seem to do that, now can I? Anyways, I’ve already heard her side of the story.”

“What did she say?” Vaughn asked, sweat already starting to form on his brow.

“Nothing. Did you give her a velvet box?” Jack said, remembering his previous conversation with Sydney.

“Y-yes.”

“What was it?”

“It was a gift for Valentine’s Day.” Vaughn looked down at the elevator floor, waiting for Jack to explode.

“Agent Vaughn, do you have any idea how seriously you could have jeopardized Sydney’s status? By your foolishness, you could have endangered everything you two have worked for. Just, answer me this; are you in love with my daughter?” Vaughn’s head jerked up and searched Jack’s eyes for the right answer, but all he saw was a father trying to protect his daughter.

“I don’t know anymore. I thought I was, and I thought the feelings were reciprocated, but they’re not.”

“Of course they are, you fool. Are you so blind you can’t tell when someone like Sydney is in love with you?”

“I guess so.”

“But why is she fighting it? She has always given in to her emotions before, so why stop herself now?” he mused, thinking to himself.

“Maybe she doesn’t want to go through the pain of losing someone again,” Vaughn said, quietly answering Jack’s questions.

“Look, right now our main focus is finding Sydney and getting back to headquarters.”

“What if we can’t find her?”

“We will find her. Because I think I know where she went.”

I think that was the next chap. Quite honestly, I'm losing track.

"Sydney, what are you doing here?"

"I need your help."

"Why would you come to me?"

"Because I need to know exactly how you were able to fake your death."

"What do you mean?"

"How did you break the heart of the man you loved and made it believable?"

"Sydney, are you in trouble? Did something happen between you and Agent Vaughn?"

"I-I-I don't know." Sydney looked down at the floor, tears steadily streaming down her eyes. "The CIA claims they're ready to take down the Alliance. Once it's over with, I want to be rid of this life forever."

"You mean leave the CIA? Leave your father?"

"Everything. Even you."

"Alright. Here's what you need to do. Do you know where you are going?" Sydney nodded. "Alright. Get some paper and a pen and I'll give you your instructions along with some other information." Sydney nodded again, turned on her heel, and left. Ten minutes later she was back with a notebook and a pack of pens.

"This won't take long."

"I'll wait." As much as she didn't want to, Sydney knew her mother was her last chance at getting Vaughn to let her go. She had run all the way from the hospital to see her, hoping Vaughn wouldn't follow.

"Agent Bristow, they're here."

"Where?"

"Outside the building."

"Alright. Don't let them into this area of the building. Make sure I have an escape route without their interf-" Sydney stopped speaking, her ears picking up on her father's desperate voice calling out her name from down the hallway. They found her.

"Sydney! Sydney, please talk to us!"

"Dad, just leave! Please! Go get the codes so we can get this done and over with!" she yelled from the other side of the bars, hoping the guards wouldn't open the gates for him.

"Sydney, I can't leave without knowing you're alright. Will you please talk to me?"

"Jack, I don't think she wants to talk to anyone right now." Up until this point, Irina had been furiously writing down everything Sydney would need to leave the country. However, she felt she needed to speak on Sydney's behalf.

"This doesn't concern you, Derevko."

"Oh yes it does, Bristow. Because when my daughter is in distress, the matter very much concerns me. Now leave."

"I will not take orders from someone in a glass cage."

"Shut up, both of you!" Sydney shouted, removing her hands from her ears. They had flown up when her parents had started arguing. "Now, Dad, leave here before I ask for you to be removed. Mom, please continue writing," she said, turning to each in turn.

"Sydney, please-"

"NO! Get out!" She was screaming now, quickly advancing towards the gates, but gaining her self control almost as quickly as she lost it.

"Alright. But if you're interested, there's someone outside who wants to talk to you." He turned abruptly and left.

"Here Sydney. It's a list of contacts, back ups, hotels and car rentals, some places you can go, all reliable."

"Thank you."

"Sydney, have I earned one question with a full, truthful answer from you?"

"I suppose so."

"Why are you turning your back on Agent Vaughn? Why are you so desperate to get rid of him?"

"Because I don't want my heart broken again, and I'm afraid that's what he'll do. Thank you for this information. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a murderous bastard to bring to justice."

"Sloane?"

"And every other man in his organization who knew the truth." As Sydney started walking away, she heard her mother's voice for the last time.

"One more thing. Agent Vaughn won't break your heart. He has no intention of doing so, and if he did it wouldn't be of his own free will. When you make this little getaway, you might want to think about taking him with you." Sydney turned around, smiled at her mother, and walked away.

I'm losing track of all my chaps. I think that was the last one I had posted. If I had any more posted, please tell me!

~Me :angel2:

Wow, this story is really good so far, I can't wait to read more! One thing, I'm trying to see this from Sydney's POV, and I think that Vaughn getting killed the same way Danny did would be a big reason for her to leave too. Not just getting her heart broken. I don't know, just a thought that was buggin me as I read it. Other than that it's a great fic, and I can't wait til' you post more!

Oh, zut... I think I had another chap. Zut, zut, zut...

Thanks for the input, spywolf. It's a little confusing, but thanks!
