CHAPTER EIGHT
The next day, Sydney was ready to go home; with the baby they had named Thomas. Micheal escorted her carefully, balancing her in one arm and the baby carrier in the other. When they were in the car, the baby started to cry. Micheal didn’t know what to do, but Sydney went with her maternal instinct and picked up the baby. Thomas quieted when he was in his mother’s arms. Sydney would have burst with happiness if she weren’t so worn out. One night wasn’t enough to recover from giving birth. Micheal knew it would be better to take Sydney back to his place, so he did. When they got there, Sydney insisted on calling Francie. They hadn’t done anything about her yet, since Sydney was convinced that it was a mistake. Micheal was reluctant, but Sydney insisted. In the end, she won. Micheal sat by Sydney, watching her as she made the call. When she finished, she turned to face Micheal.
“I’ve decided on something,” she said. “I want to change my last name to Vaughn.”
“But we can’t get married-“ Micheal began.
“Because you’re dead.” Sydney finished. “I know that. But I can change it ‘in memory’ of you.”
“Why?”
“Because I love you.”
