What book has aliens that grow houses?

Hi

Years ago I read one of a series of books about some humans (I think) who crash landed (I think) on an alien world where technology was distinctly biochemical. Vehicles and houses were grown and genetically modified for purpose, toys and tools were crafted from living tissue and food was cooked using enzymes.

Does anyone know the name of this books series and the name of the author?

Unfortunately the premise doesn't ring any bells for me. Sounds like it might make for an interesting read though so hopefully others might be able to come up with a name.
