I vote Borg; they don't bother to negotiate and their tech is superior.

I suppose I'll be the minority here, but imho Sarah Palin is the solution, not the problem.

(shields up; brace for impact...)

Humans come in a close second for me, behind Sarah Palin. Here's why:

Humans are, well, often rather short-sighted, and prone to self-destructive behavior. Sarah Palin, whatever one thinks of her politics (I'm pretty conservative in a lot of ways, myself), amplifies those self-destructive tendencies by her unwillingness to compromise.

As to the Borg and other nasties, well, they're scary, but they're attacking us from outside, and that's always less dangerous than destroying yourself from inside.

not to turn this into a political thread but...if you think Gov Palin is unwilling to compromise, what think you of Nancy Pelosi, who essentially told the Pope to take a hike?

Touche! :D

Governor Palin is simply the name that was on the poll. You could have said "American Politicians" and I would have said the same thing.

The trouble is that at least since 1980 and the rise of Reagan Conservatism (and even before, if you look at the counter-culture of the 1960s and the McCarthy anticommunists of the 1950s), the willingness to compromise has been steadily declining in the USA, and politicians of both parties and all ideologies have been using this polarization to get and keep power (just look at Reagan, both Clintons, and Bush II, not to mention the smaller actors). As a result, we have become a house divided against itself, and almost nobody, Palin included, is willing to even begin to entertain the notion that they are anything less than 100% right, all the time, and that anyone who disagrees with them is treasonous scum.

So yeah, the Borg and the Klingons and the Nazis are all scary, but at least they aren't your neighbors or your senators or your governors or your wannabe president.

on the other hand, plenty of commentators argue that compromise is bad. If you're a liberal, would you be willing to sacrifice abortion rights and gay marriage in order to get more welfare? would conservatives allow the same to get lower taxes? in a way it's a good thing, as our politics now are more issue-driven than personality cult.

But the personality cult is part of the problem; we've mixed the issues and the personalities, so it's hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. When you elevate a public figure to impossible heights (as many of my liberal friends did with Bill Clinton and my conservative friends did with George W. Bush), you stop evaluating them as being fallible human beings and you start bending over backwards to heroify them and vilify those who disagree with them. The discussion stops being about the issues and becomes an "I'm right, you're wrong, and that means I'm good and you're bad" proposition. The kinds of issues that get pushed in this environment (like flag-burning and gay marriage, neither of which has any real impact on the lives of most Americans) are just not the major issues that this country needs to deal with (like the economy, the deficit, the widening gap between rich and poor, etc.).

And this is very different than people standing up for what they believe in (gay marriage, lower taxes, etc.) and fighting for it. Abe Lincoln and Martin Luther King managed to deal with extremely serious problems without making permanent enemies of half the country.

And I fear that I have hijacked this thread with my babble. So I will add a new villain to the mix, one more dangerous, more deadly, more horrifying than the Borg, the Klingons, the Cylons, and even Darth Vader all put together....

Dr. Smith.

Oh, the pain! :D

I remember one critic who said of the show 'They should have just dropped him off the nearest planet and be done with him.'

Daleks are also powerful and ruthless, but somehow the Borg worry me more; maybe their 'humanity'.

I'm glad they didn't; Dr. Smith was a brilliant comic creation, and made the show worth watching.

And he had one secret weapon that ensured his survival: namely that the Robinsons were just plain jaw-dropping, mind-bogglingly stupid.

I love the Daleks; Exterminate! Exterminate!

guess that was the point; if the situation had been 'real' they'd have ditched him asap; since it was a tv show they kept him for plot reasons. any drama needs an antagonist. ever watch the Simpsons episode where Marge declares war on Itchy & Scratchy? there's a clip of I&S not fighting, but sipping lemonade and chatting. "I think it sucks!" declares Bart.

True. Although Smith became more than a villain; he was a walking, conniving, hilarious plot device. Most of the time bad things happened to the Robinsons not because he was trying to do them harm, but because he was a conniving, greedy trickster.

He made that show worth watching.

Hhhhmm..... now that you say that, he *did* resemble GW Bush! :D

*Come to think of it, he DID remind me of Bill Clinton...

Partisan BS on the last several posts!
I voted the empire because I figure thats what our government and most all our politicians are now! They are all an "Empire" a "firm" that hires only Dr. Smiths!
Folks, we really need to not carry the partisan BS out here in the general pop. thats what the elected officials want us to do. That provides the perfect conditions for control. Ever hear a line that goes..."United we stand, divided we fall"????
Politicians carry on this song and dance just as a diversionary tactic and most of the population is too caught up in who's right and who's wrong to see the bigger piture!
Can you say "Global Domination"? Thats the endgame here.
I'm a conservative but both sides are wrong in part and both sides are right in part. We better stick together or if we are ever faced with a borg or something like that WE ARE SCREWED!!!
Consequently, I'm way out of it I guess because I have no idea what your talking about that Palin is unwilling to compromise. Sounds like someone needs to stop watching so much MSNBC, lol.

i am surprised that more people are answering that it is us that is the major threat. i put that option there cause i knew that if i didnt then i would have heard about it either way.

what i am saying is that in our society we have to reassure ourselves all the time that we humans are the biggest threat to ourselves. its like its a lil drug that we are addicted to.
