Interesting takes. But, boy, do I ever have a different opinion. Jack isn't emotionless, but extremely repressed--he suppresses his emotions because he doesn't want to deal with them. In fact, his emotions are so strong that he fears them--they almost destroyed him once upon a time. (Did you see no emotion when he struck Cuvee?) Is he selfish? It's an interesting way of seeing it. The man doesn't even have a life. His actions, hiding his secrets, may seem so, but his motivation is Sydney's safety and happiness. For example, did hiding the truth about Irina in any way protect Jack? Hardly. Sydney adored the memory of her mother all unaware of what she perpetrated upon him, leaving the two estranged. He's put his life on the line to protect hers on every available occasion. His actions have been at times misguided (setting up Irina because he feared for Sydney's safety), but his intentions were good.
That said, Jack's experience with Irina hardened him. He is no hero. His insistence that evil must be fought by any means necessary exemplifies the fact that his outlook needs adjustment--something that he can look to his own daughter (his "salvation") to assist in.

I think Jack is a fundamentally decent guy whose life experiences have hardened him to the point where he can be quite ruthless when something is at stake that he cares about, like Sydney's safety. Emotions got him burned before, so he deeply distrusts them. It's fascinating to watch his character develop.

ITS HARD TO TELL BUT HE LOVES SYD AND WANTS THE BEST FOR HER. YOU COULD TELL WHEN HE TRIED TO PROTECT HER FORM IRINA. I SOMETIMES WONDER THOUGH. HE IS INVOLVED WITH THE WHOLE EMILY SLOANE THING. :blink:
i love jack...he is a strong character, sometimes good and sometimes evil...however lately he has been sloppy, and now all of the sudden he is being blamed for killing emily? have i missed something...i thought sloane did it, then emily was alive...and im sure she is still alive and eventually taking over the alliance, however...when did this while sloane turining on jack arise?

Sloane did try to kill Emily, but then found out that she had been given an antidote. Then he was sent her finger as evidence that she was abucted and held for ransom, but when he paid it, he just got photos of her supposedly dead body (now shot through the head). So Kane's theory is that Jack is the abductor since Jack's missions (rogue and for the CIA, self-designed as far as SD-6 is concerned) had him absent at the critical times when events happened in the chain of events for Emily's abduction/possible murder.
As for Sloane turning on Jack: Sloane would turn on anyone at any time. After all, he was able to reason his way into killing his beloved wife. He certainly wouldn't worry about turning on a friend whom he suspected of abducting and killing his wife. And he's certainly not above suspecting Jack--isn't he suspecting Jack of doing something he might do himself?

What I lovew about both Jack and Sloane is that at times they may sem heartless but when they are around the loves of their life they show compassion. Jack is a bit overprotective of syd sometimes but you see how much he loved irina especially in the getaway. He is so supporive of her now and he shows love towards her . Sloane does the same for emily. He truly loves her. But in their jobs they cant have trust come too easily or they will be killed. Sloane is just week and he is not evil but wants the easy way out. Jack is strong because he is trying to bring down the evil but not hurt too many and not expose him or sydney. He loves his work. he loves sydney. he loves irina

He has so much pain and guilt and vulnerability buried inside of him that it makes you ache to watch him try to deal with all of that. That is where his questionable actions arise from. He hasn't yet figured out the right way to deal with the emotions within him.

I too agree with Verdantheart and GoodguyAnna...Jack's had a tough life, and the only way he can live with himself is to not remember most of it...like when he told Syd at the beginning that to tell her what she was doing would have forced him to admit who he was! I think Jack was starting to come out of shell this season...I just hope he doesn't go back in there because Irina is now loose...and the CIA probably thinks its his fault. Poor Jack...just when he starts to trust his feelings he gets burned! Why can't things work out right for him
