I have done a multi stage Estes rocket, it worked out pretty well, I had to read the instructions a couple of times to make sure I did it correctly, but it worked ok, the connecting ring betwixt stages got a little cooked, LOL!

Yep that happens many times. Staging often requires booster replacement on a regular basis. I've seen a first stage last 10-12 times and other times 1-2 depending on the expertise of the flyer but they all take a beating.

Ahhhh, makes sense, because it got a little crispy, I say coat the booster with a light heat resistant paint like on hot rods and aircraft and it should survive....

I coat the inside with super glue. The outside wall of the booster that fits inside of the next stage needs to be slick so it kicks off quickly. It should only be snug enough to hold the first stage booster on for launch unless you're trying to ignite more than 1 engine on the 2nd stage. How far apart the stages are, makes a difference too.
