I am a fan of both but Ronald D. Moore's Battlestar is something else entirely as far as the sci-fi genre is concerned imho, so if it was a competition I'd be going for the new BSG without a second thought.

Anyone watch the UFC here? Heard of Luke Cummo? He was on a season of the Ultimate Fighter and made it to the final (so yep, he can fight). He made a comment about people calling him a geek because he's into sci fi, which I thought was perfect: "Geeks rule the world." :D

First Men in the Moon is a good guess, especially since it has scenes in tunnels like you describe, but it also has insectoid aliens and they end up battling alien life forms, so if there was nothing like that in the film you're trying to find, that probably isn't the one. I thought perhaps...
