Didn't Jack enter Syd into the Project Christmas program after Irina left. One lead to the other I was under the impression.

Irina almost killed Syd at the end of season 1, so what would stop her from doing it again. Particularly if she were helping cover up what Lauren was about to tell her. As for Jack I was suggesting not that he knew, but it might help explain his attraction to Katya.
