Sci-Fi Defiance (SyFy)

Of the two episodes I was more surprised by the direction they are taking with Rafe's daughter. It seems they are creating quite a house of women in crime.
That was definitely a surprise...I wonder how (or if) they're going to pull that together with Rafe's wife now on the scene?

If Defiance isn't picked up for a new season then at least the last two episodes of the season (again with the two back-to-back episodes on the same night?!) served as nice way to wrap up most of the story lines. Seeing at least some of the often-talked-about-but-never-seen "New York" city was nice; I just wish they had set more time there to show what life was like in NY versus Defiance. It also makes me wonder if there are any other cities like NY out there or if that was that last great city following the war.

Though some stories were wrapped up...

... they left enough unanswered questions for a new season.

Finally caught the season finale...sure hope they renew it for another season, because there are a lot of storylines that need to be continued. All in all, have enjoyed both seasons so far.

But if they don't renew it, at least Grant Bowler will be free to take on the role of Aston in its TV series... ;)

Announced today, SyFy has renewed Defiance for a 13 episode third season.
Yeah, I saw that on Twitter (following several of the cast members). Finally able to breathe a sigh of relief on that one...even if it means I'll have to wait for Grant Bowler to be free to take on the role of Aston in a future TV series (haha).

For those who missed it, the Defiance season 3 premiere was this past Friday on SyFy. Looks like it has great promise, based on the excitement that they put in this 2-hour episode. Did not see the various main character deaths coming that they had...maybe I missed some actor/actress contract non-renewals out there?

I caught this last night (some days I wonder how I ever watched so many shows before I had a DVR in the house) and, yeah, the deaths caught me off guard. That was certainly one way of cleaning up a loose-end story line.

With imminent danger now lurking on two fronts there should certainly be plenty of action this season, especially now that the deaths have eliminated a lot of the side stories.

After the season premiere, I am going to go with a prediction...
The Omec father is either killed or, one way or another, is out of the picture, and the daughter stays in Defiance.

On a slightly related note, the Omec remind me a lot of the Wraith from Stargate: Atlantis. Not their physical appearance but more along the line of the traits.

Looks like they went the opposite direction...

All in all, I've enjoyed the season thus far. I'm curious how long they're going to make us wait before seeing Datak Tarr back in the picture again...well, what's left of him, anyway...

I honestly did not see that coming. I figured he would remove it, but was thinking he would disable the device...definitely a much better ending of that specific episode.

Also too bad that they didn't keep one of their other new characters around long enough. Doc could have used a sidekick...

Yeah, I called that one wrong. In the early scenes between the daughter and Nolan I thought that was going to lead to something; I wasn't expecting it to be the father who would want to be a part of the community.

I was thinking that he was going to try & switch sides again by revealing the plot. It's good that there are still some shows out there that can pull off a few surprises.

I am starting to feel bad for the Doc. After what she's been through lately it was time for her to have something go right. Hopefully the writers have better plans for her down the line.

Apparently all I had to do was post here about when they were going to bring Datak back, and then they do. And they added in another new surprise with the VC folks and all that went on in this latest episode. Looking forward to the rest of the season...

Looks like you ended up being partially correct...the daughter does end up staying, but it's not looking like she wants to be part of the community... ;-)

I was a bit confused at the end scene with Datak. I had thought that Doc's sidekick had been killed...but that end scene made it seem otherwise.

Going to be an interesting pair of episodes to end the season (and I haven't yet seen news on a renewal)...

I am still surprised a bit that the father didn't turn out to be the villain. After the upcoming battle I'm interested in seeing if any Omec are left standing.

I thought the assistant was killed also but from that scene it looks like the daughter has been using the doc to build up quite a little food supply for the sleeping Omec. If Nolan is being held responsible for his actions while under alien control I wonder if the Doc will be excused or put on trial?

I just wonder how much more the town can be attacked before it ends up being just another town fully composed of rubble. With the signature arch mostly destroyed the only thing left the town has going for it is its location and even that advantage is partially gone with the main barrier wall down.

If all of this Omec plot thread action was just to get them another way to mine the minerals they need (Gulanite?) after their mine owner didn't renew his acting contract, I'm going to be disappointed.

Amanda doesn't love Doc like she does Nolan... ;)

That's the one thing I haven't been able to get my head around...they make this big deal about the force field being the only thing that stands between Defiance and annihilation, and in the episodes since killing the VC death squad, nothing has happened to them through the huge gap in their defenses (and presumably, the Omec will be coming down from orbit somehow).

Loved the season finale...lots of good stuff. The only trouble is, the way the writers wrote the end of the episode certainly made it seem like they didn't have much confidence that there would be a fourth season... :(

You loved the finale? - I didn't - In fact I haven't slept well since seeing it!

If I got that ending right, Nolan's daughter, Irisa, decided she couldn't bear watching them destroy all those Omec children so she was going to sabotage the plan to destroy the Omec ship and Nolan rendered her unconscious, sent her home, and ran off with a ship full of cannibalistic hungry Omec to what would obviously be his end as a meal for the Omec! Is that a good ending? - Send the star of the series off to be eaten? Makes you wonder how Irisa would feel about roaches, mosquitoes and bed bugs, kill them but save the eggs like she wanted to save the Omec children?
To me the ending was BUGS!

Yeah, if there is a S4 it will be really different dynamic than the first three seasons. Of course it would be interesting to see a "Defiance: The Adventures of Nolan" type show after that closing shot but I suspect that with the declining ratings in S3 it'll be hard-sell for SyFy to justify another season. There is a bit of a wildcard though: The Defiance online game that is tied into the TV series. I'm not much of a game player these days so I'm only guessing that if the game is doing huge number than it might be the game studio that would push for another live-action series.

Well, since you just gave the ending I guess we can skip with the spoiler tags. (Sorry, anybody out there reading this!).

The Omec are still sleeping so he won't end up as an Omec munchie unless he or the Doc releases them. But I don't recall there ever being any talk about the ship being able to support human life (aka: human food) so my interpretation was that Nolan would likely end up dying in the captains seat while traveling the stars seeing the wonders that he always dreamed about since a kid (Irisa's voice-over) with the Doc not having much time left either. In the meantime the ship would continue going further out into "deep space" as a ghost ship with no captain at the helm and a cargo full of Omec that will one day will be awakened by the ship AI when a suitable planet is found.

Scenario #2 would be that the Doc, being quite the resourceful person when need be with a bit of mysterious past of her own, finds a way for her & Nolan to survive on the ship and the two of them travel the stars in a ship that could wield quite a bit of power with a cargo that could either be used as an asset ("Nolan: King of the Omec" or "Yowl: Queen of the Omec") or be a ticking time-bomb waiting to explode.

I always kind of liked the Doc character and would so watch show about her & Nolan being 'space pirates' doing odd jobs to survive in a verse that is totally unknown to them and where the VC, Earth, and the Omec are unknown to everybody else.

Sorry, didn't know about the 'spoiler' tag - I will post it in the future - where is it located?

But this may not be the end anyway. Just looked it up and found this on tvline.com which was giving the run down on which shows are officially ended and which are scheduled for renewal:

"Defiance: Season 3 finale airs Aug. 28; Season 4 could go either way."

Cable Renewal Scorecard 2015: What's Coming Back? What's Cancelled? What's on the Bubble?

Now back to the ending. Yes, I've read some reviewers here and elsewhere on the web who liked the ending.
And not every ending would satisfy every fan - But for a basically really good sci-fi series, well acted, well directed, and well written - I would think a better ending could have been written - And my feeling is the writers, producers, and directors really don't want it to end - neither do I. They could easily re-boot into season 4 with several episodes of Nolan and Doc Yewell dumping the Omec somewhere where they will no longer pose a threat to Human life {say a planet run by a Borg like group that controls hostile and cannibalistic aliens}, then return to Earth where Nolan is forgiven for killing the Voltan ambassador {remember he was not in control} and then being hailed a hero that saved Humanity from the Omec............You see it could easily see this series
go on and on and...........

Sorry, didn't know about the 'spoiler' tag - I will post it in the future - where is it located?

Just place the word "spoiler" (minus the quotes) within a set of square brackets at the front of the text, and the same thing with a / before "spoiler" after the text, and it pops up like this:

Is Amanda dead? It could go either way...

My guess is that they'll gauge how much fan feedback they get (toward renewal) between now and the decision point. If memory serves, there was some debate about a third season before they finally succumbed to fan response, and renewed it.

And this from the site "DEN OF GEEK"

"
Will we get a chance to see Defiance season 4 on Syfy? We hope so. Here's what we know.
Another season of Defiance has come and gone, and now we have to ask...will we see Defiance season 4? This was the show's strongest season yet, by a considerable margin, so it certainly deserves to continue. But as of right now, Syfy hasn't committed to another year of the show.

Hopefully they will, but the problem is that Defiance's viewership numbers are lower than they were during the show's second season. They've remained steady throughout season three, even improving after the halfway point, so that's good. But compared to previous years, there's been a steep decline. That doesn't bode well for Defianceseason 4.

The best thing we can say is that if you want to see Defiance season 4 happen, make a lot of noise so Syfy hears about it. Tweet #Defiance at @Syfy on Twitter, and try and get something going with other fans. We'll keep you posted as soon as there is any official announcement about Defiance season 4."

Hopefully if SyFy doesn't pick it up, there will be another network out there which does...as long as it's not Fox......
