Toho in Japan Working On Their Own New 'Godzilla' Movie for 2016
by Alex Billington
December 7, 2014

The original company that started it all – Toho Co., Ltd. from Tokyo, Japan – is getting ready to bring back the giant radioactive lizard in their own new movie. Variety/THR reports that Toho has announced their new Godzilla will begin shooting next summer, for release sometime in 2016, though details are limited so far. The last Godzilla movie that Toho made was Godzilla: Final Wars in 2004 for the monster's 50th anniversary, Toho's 29th Godzilla film.

Toho in Japan Working On Their Own New 'Godzilla' Movie for 2016

Japan’s Toho to Produce New ‘Godzilla’ Movie

The movie is scheduled to begin production in the summer of 2015 and bow theatrically in 2016, Toho sources have revealed. Details, including director and cast, have yet to be announced.

Toho has launched what it calls the Godzilla Strategic Conference (Godzi-Con), a committee of studio executives and directors whose aim is to reboot the Godzilla brand, including the new “Godzilla” pic.

The head of the new Godzilla project, veteran producer Taichi Ueda, told the press that, though Toho will not spend the $200 million reportedly lavished on the American “Godzilla,” “The time has come for Japan to make a film that will not lose to Hollywood.” Ueda added that Toho hopes to make Godzilla a character that “will represent Japan and be loved around the world” by the time of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

As part of its effort to reacquaint a new generation of Japanese with the country’s signature monster, Toho plans to erect a giant Godzilla statue in its Toho Cinemas Shinjuku theater by April of next year.

I've updated the thread title to "Godzilla: Resurgence" as the title & release date are now known. July 29, 2016.

From the first official "teaser" trailer from Toho..... please, please, please don't be a 'found footage' film!

My anticipation just went down a notch... Cloverfield gave me a raging headache.
No matter how bad it is I will have to add it to my collection but it may only get one or two watches from me.
I wasn't very impressed with the filler scenes in Final War and as of right now my least favorite Godzilla movie from Toho is the Hedora one (Godzilla VS The Smog Monster).
If that trailer is an indication of the filming technique it will be my least favorite.
I don't find those filming techniques unique and artistic, I find they take away from the movie. To me the camera work needs to be invisible. To me, its like a stage play where every actor has script in hand to say every line.

IIRC he had something similar in one of the 1990s movies; they said he was overheating and would blow up.

I like the trailer. thx for posting

For the first time in Godzilla's sorted history I find that I like Legendary's design better than ToHo's design. The best Toho design is the very first Gojira and the Final War Godzilla.

Considering that Godzilla is sourced from radiation poisoning, this Godzilla has a decrepit look. This looks like another ToHo reboot where Godzilla is a force of nature hellbent on destruction. Personally, I like the 'Hero' personification of Godzilla.I've a feeling this Godzilla won't have a personality, just a killer animal instinct. In Gojira, he was a raging monster. I think this is the case again.

Perhaps this is a kind of tribute to the Fukushima nuclear disaster from that tsunami? The Japanese are once again threatened by a radioactive monster. I can understand how it might 'hit home' for the people of Japan. Do they consider their current situation a natural thing or a technology mistake?

Godzilla's previous personalities might represent the fact the the bombs were dropped by a hostile personality against the Japanese people. Will this reboot be a representation of nature as a personality or nature as a condition? Do the people of Japan feel their current situation is something that happened because of some kind of natural 'wrath' or do they understand they are just victims of circumstance?

Is this going to be a wrath of destruction with a purpose or a meandering monster that has to be stopped?

my question; will he (or She?) have another monster to fight? I kind of like the 'zilla alone concept (like the original).

At the 0:20 second mark of the video that Tom posted I'm not sure from the angle if that is Godzilla's tail behind him we see in the forefront or a second monster. After watching it a few times I suspect it's just his tail but, yeah, I tend to favor the lone Godzilla movies as well.

I love city-stomping and building-smashing monsters. I love monsters period. The original Gojira is the best of the ToHo godzilla movies. A lone creature awakens and threatens civilization like a force of nature.

In all fairness tho, I like the Godzilla that fights other monsters. The Legendary Godzilla I feel is the best so far.
The first Godzilla was from the ToHo Showa Era.
Godzilla (Gojira)
Godzilla Raids Again
King Kong vs. Godzilla
Mothra vs. Godzilla
Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster
Invasion of Astro-Monster
Ebirah, Horror of the Deep
Son of Godzilla
Destroy All Monsters
All Monsters Attack
Godzilla vs. Hedorah
Godzilla vs. Gigan
Godzilla vs. Megalon
Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla
Terror of MechaGodzilla
Of the Showa Era movies, Gojira was the best. During the era, Godzilla was dumbed down to child entertainment. Godzilla Raids Again was alright but the rest are childfare fodder. Some are downright comical.

Next came the Heisei Era
The Return of Godzilla (Godzilla 1985, Godzilla 1984, Godzilla)
Godzilla vs. Biollante
Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
Godzilla vs. Mothra
Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla 2
Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla
Godzilla vs. Destoroyah

This era was filled with political agenda, slanted for a slightly older audience with more mature overtones. Still comical tho.

Then came the Millennium Series
Godzilla 2000: Millennium
Godzilla vs. Megaguirus
Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack
Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla
Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.
Godzilla: Final Wars

This era was purely a vehicle to sell movies. Some of the movies had cool scenes of monster battles but still remained comical and limited. The Final Wars movie (The 50th Anniversary) had improved suit designs but was terrible with the story. I'm surprised they didn't get sued for all the infringements.

The Legendary Era
I have to include King Kong because of the coming crossovers.
Godzilla Series

Godzilla
Godzilla 2
Godzilla vs. Kong

King Kong Series

Kong: Skull Island
Godzilla vs. Kong

We are at the beginning of this era. The upcoming films look to be a great addition to the Godzilla franchise with Godzilla as the force of balance in a world gone technology. While Legendary's Godzilla movie had its faults (all do), It did bring back the awe and wonder of this legendary creature. Only time will tell if The Legendary Era will set a positive mark in the Godzilla franchise.

Notice that I did not notate Godzilla 1998. That was NOT Godzilla, It was a big lizard. While it was cool to see, it was NOT Godzilla at all.

This ToHo Godzilla stands to be yet another start to a new era of movies. What will it be known as? Will it have an agenda? Be slanted to a specific audience? Japanese make some of the best horror movies on the planet, is Godzilla going to go horror? That would be a nice change. This idea is not new, the original Gojira was a horror movie in many ways.

+1
hilarious moment from Buffy Season 7; the geeky slayer is playing a game (D&D?) with Zander and Andrew. She scoffs 'how tough can Godzilla be, Mathew Broderick took him down'. Andrew about has an episode and pleads 'Zander!' and Zander observes, 'That wasn't Godzilla, that was just a giant mutated lizard'. To this the girl replies 'you're just as much a geek as he'.
(may not be an exact quote but pretty close)

It looks like the film will end up being released in North America and most other markets as Shin Godzilla so I've updated the thread title. The name is from Shin Gojira, the Japanese title.

I'm hoping this gets a decent release in the US that is actually supported as I'd love to convince Mrs. Kevin to come with me and see this one in the theater.

The US release dates for Shin Godzilla have now been established.

The film will be released to 440 North American theaters on Oct. 11 for a limited run thru Oct. 18 of this year. At the moment the release will be in its original Japanese dialog track with English subtitles. Since its July release in Japan the Japanese domestic box office has brought in over $50 million USD.
