How exactly would space coordinates for planets work?

Jean Luc's ship explores deep space, and trans space. I don't recall any bouy's being on that show, except when they launch one into a odd space oddity. I think they divide the universe/ galaxy into quadrants, and stars are use as markers. If Jean/James T. want to explore a quadrant then they choose one and hit it. Hell Janeway got the crew lost in the delta quadrant, but had an interesting time there. So like a sailor uses a sextant<giggity, to use the stars to navigate, I reckon the wisest thing to do is look to the stars...;)

Tom, in our universe the advanced races have ships that can produce their own "corridor" (wormhole) and use it to get from one system to the next but once they arrive they slow to light speed or less, to travel from the entry point to a particular place /coordinate and navigating like a real NASA vehicle would.

When a piece of fiction uses FTL travel for ships (as I do), then you've already established the laws of physics don't apply in all the same ways that they do in real life...some creators make that the only divergence from reality (The Lost Fleet series is one where they use relativity to advance plots), and some don't.
