Sci-Fi Doctor Who (2005-2021) [NuWho]

As much as I agree that Tom Baker will always be "Doctor Who", you really need to start watching some shows that are newer than from 40 years ago!😆

I first heard of Dr. Who around 1970 from a library book about sci fi in movies/tv. they had a picture of Peter Cushing from one of the Dr. Who movies.
I finally got to see the Doctor in early 80s. first one was 'Genesis of the Daleks'. I watched half of it wondering who the curly hair doofus was.
but of course I came to like him. 'Talons of Weng Chiang' might be my all time fave.

I'm up to date on the series, but my preference is Tom Baker. If a show was good enough then, then its good enuff now.;):D Now Mr. Kevin, I have a theme song that reminds me of you, its all in good taste of course.
enjoy Kevin.

The new season of Doctor Who with Jodi Whittaker is slated to premiere simultaneously on both BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the US on Sunday, October 7. BBC America will actually be showing it twice on that day, once in the afternoon at the same time that BBC One is showing and and then later in evening during prime-time as normal. The plan with the double viewing is to prevent any spoilers from hitting the net before US viewers had a chance to see it so instead it'll premiere in both markets at the same time (evening for UK, afternoon for US).

Just saw the new Doctor and it was love at first site!

Before watching I was thinking with all the new superhero female stars would be interesting to see a
female Doctor Who.

And it works!

Netflix used to have all the old series - Watched them all, liked them all.

Missed the last two seasons, not becuase Doctor Who isn't great sci-fi, it is - But mainly because I'm not
a horror story fan - But did like reading H.P. Lovecraft when I was younger - Lovecraft was in a class
by himself for creative imagination.

And now that there is not enough new sci-fi to watch and I've seen almost everything else available
from the past, I think I'll go back and watch the last two seasons that I missed - The Last Doctor was
Doctor was also and excellent actor - and the shows were still quality Doctor Who.

I have high hopes for the new female doctor, like Jessica Alba {Dark Angel] who looked so cute
I didn't think it would work, Jessica Alba did make it work and I bet you the New Doctor will
also work well.........

Doctor Who is off to a bold new start to kick off Jodie Whittaker’s era as the Thirteenth Doctor

Ep_1_4.0.jpeg

"All of this is new to you, and new can be scary,” remarks Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor early in her debut episode, “The Woman Who Fell To Earth,” which kicks off the eleventh (or 37th, depending on how you count) season of the long-running sci-fi show.
And she’s right: change can be scary. But in the case of the Thirteenth, it’s mostly just a whole lot of fun, with Whittaker kicking off her tenure as the time-traveling, face-changing alien hero with flair and grace."

I had a chance to watch the premiere and I have to agree with @AlienView, so far it seems like if it's off to a good start. The first episode at least had a Doctor that was happy to be in the moment of interacting with humans and figuring out a monster mystery instead of the dark overly dramatic story lines we've seen with most of "New Who". Growing up in the era of Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee I've always preferred the stand-alone 'monster-of-the-week' type episodes of Who versus the story arcs that are drawn out over the full course of a season (or longer! ).

I quite enjoyed "The Woman Who Fell to Earth." I thought Jodie got the Doctor right away. I didn't mind the darker tone, but I'm happy to see a change. I also thought there was some good building of the "friends" in a way that didn't slow the pace of the episode. Looking forward to seeing how the new series progresses.

Audience figues are in free fall for season eleven of new Who, not entirely sure Chibnall will be around post this season considering a lot of reviews are getting nasty.

‘Doctor Who’: The First Female Doctor Makes Her Mark

"........
It’s not until someone calls her “madam” and informs her that she’s a woman that she actually slows down to consider the implications. “Am I?” she says, eyebrows raising with mild curiosity. “Does it suit me?”

But she’s quickly back off and running; an alien invasion waits for no one, not even a regenerating Time Lord getting used to her new form (the thirteenth of the series overall). In fact, that question never gets answered directly in “The Woman Who Fell to Earth,” the episode in which Jodie Whittaker debuts as the first female Doctor in over 50 years of “Doctor Who.” In fairness, it doesn’t have to; Whittaker’s deft, frenetic, confident performance speaks for itself. Within minutes she’s made it clear that yes, being a woman suits the Doctor just fine........."

‘Doctor Who’: The First Female Doctor Makes Her Mark (SPOILERS)

Those of us who have explored time travel - done time travel - moved through the
dimensions of other worlds, other times, other universes - We understand that sex and gender
are irrelevant - The sexual dimension that Humans are stuck in has nothing to do with the larger
game plan playing out in real time now.

THE NEW DOCTOR HAS LANDED!

So far the current season with Whitaker hasn't been bad. I think Capaldi had a stronger start but overall I think Whitaker's Doctor is more like 'classic Who' versus Smith & Tennant.

I agree. A few of the episodes were powerful. I didn't think there was really awful episode this season, which is better than some of the past seasons. I am bummed that there won't be a Series 12 until 2020, but that's kinda how series are playing out these days outside of American network TV.

Xmas special is now the New Year's special, and Chibs is bringing back the Daleks to try and win back some viewers.

After the last three seasons taking a year out is probably a good idea. Bring back Tenant and Davis is my call.

Where is the topic on this? Judging from the lack of conversation on it...I'm gonna guess people are hating it? Well I love it, and if you do too, come and chat about it here!

Jai :rain:
Nope, not hating it. Just very, very busy the past few months dealing with serious medical issue cross country and funeral stuff. 2019 will see some posts from me.

How many people are watching Doctor Who on streaming services like Netflix? I usually DVR the new shows off of BBC America and fast forward through the commercials so I may not have noticed this otherwise... the streaming rights for Who are switching to HBO Max. Yes, another streaming service for people to deal with as shows continue to get scattered across about a dozen competing streaming services. :(

The Doctor is heading to HBO Max after the WarnerMedia streaming service picked up the exclusive streaming rights to long-running BBC Studios drama Doctor Who.

The service will have all 11 seasons of the sci-fi fan favorite at launch in spring 2020 including the SVOD premiere of season 11, which stars Jodie Whittaker. As part of the deal with BBC Studios, the streamer will be the exclusive SVOD home for future seasons after they air on BBC America.

In addition to Doctor Who, HBO Max has licensed 700 episodes of landmark BBC series including Ricky Gervais’ The Office, Top Gear, Luther and The Honorable Woman.

The new Doctor Who left Netflix in the US a few years ago and moved to Amazon Prime. Netflix has been allowing old series and movies to leave for some time now. They’ve been concentrating on their original programming.

It’s possible that this is happening because Amazon wants to do the same, in that they’d rather have people go to their streaming service for originals. It’s also possible that the BBC wanted to move more of their new programming to one streaming service. As they’re working with HBO on at least one series, and maybe a few others, HBOMax may have seemed a good bet.

I plan to still buy a season pass at Apple so I can download episodes if I want to.

Finally, this doesn’t affect the classic Who that’s still on BritBox. Which, I just saw, has the olD BBC Hitch-Hiker’s Guide TV series. They also just announced they’re getting All Creatures Great and Small, which hasn’t been available in the US since it ran on PBS in the 80s. Now if BritBox could add Blake’s 7...

The new Disney streaming service, resulting in them pulling the Disney/Marvel/Star Wars titles, isn't helping Netflix either. I hadn't seen Captain Marvel yet, it won't be on Netflix. Now Disney has confirmed that all of the Netflix Marvel shows are considered non-canon and that and canon versions would be any reboots on their own service. That's a shame because there was some quality stuff in there.

Between The Mandalorian and the Marvel stuff I'm getting ever so closer to giving in to temptation and signing up for Disney's service. I'd like to check out Doom Patrol but I'm not signing up for DC's service just for that (and what I've seen of Titans doesn't appeal to me at all). For CBS's stuff I have no interest in Discovery but the new Picard series looks interesting but I'm not signing up just for that. AT&T, which owns both DirecTV and Time-Warner (which in turn owns HBO), is trying multiple streaming services to see what sticks to the proverbial wall and gets any traction. Renaming HBO Go to HBO Max and then making deals like this with BBC America will certainly help that one. Oh, and of course, there's Hulu out there which is now the exclusive home of The Orville; one more show I won't be watching any more of. :(

Thinking out loud, it's no wonder why this Summer I find myself actually watching *less* TV and going back to exploring Kindle titles. 📚

We have a Prime account so I watch the Amazon stuff on my X-Box. Compared to the Netflix app I find the Amazon app excruciatingly awful to use. Except for their high profile stuff that they hype I'm likely missing most of the stuff on there.
Now if BritBox could add Blake’s 7...
And you just answered a question I was going to ask. :D I've seem commercials for BritBox but, until yourself, have never come across a single person who actually used it.
