Music What are your preferred ways of discovering new music?

As I get older I find myself listening to broadcast radio a lot less than I used to. The few stations that I do listen to tend to be channels that are either "oldies" stations or stations that, though they play music that crosses different genres, they still tend to be mostly songs that are not recent. Of course, mind you, the 80's are now considered to be "oldies" but that's a different topic. :P

Some new stuff that I find often comes from our "What are you listening to?" thread here at Alien Soup. That thread is pretty cool because sometimes an artist who I'm not familiar with will be posted and I then end up being totally distracted while I find & listen to all of their different songs to see what catches my attention. Watching TV shows will also often feature a song sometimes that I end up adding to my playlists. The song "No Roots" by Alice Merton, for example, is something I heard on the show The Blacklist a month or so before it started appearing everywhere.

Lately I've been trying out different subscription streaming music services. I'll likely be settling on Google Play Music for our household but it's a bit depressing because there are days when I'm browsing the "Top Charts" or "New Releases" listings and I don't know a single act shown. :oldman: :(

Where are you guys poking around these days for new music? Are "Top 40" type shows on radio still popular? You guys even listening to radio anymore or am I just one of the last holdouts that haven't going totally streaming yet?

pandora

and youtube. search for a genre ('dream pop') and somebody has a list.

discovered Fleet Foxes, Daysleepers, Slowdive, many others.

used to go yard sailing and get used CDs for a dollar. most are worthless but every now and then I find a treasure, like 'Renaissance' or 'Pure Reason Revolution'.
one of the vendors once apparently had worked at a radio station and had a bunch of 'do not sell' promotion discs.

Looks like Google Play Music (GPM) will be having an relatively short life span. Google is planning on phasing out GPM in favor of YouTube Music (YTM). Subscribers to GPM currently receive access to YTM & YouTube Premium and, at some point, GPM subscribers will be migrated over entirely to YTM. The big holdup at the moment seems to be the fact the the two services have totally different backend systems and GPM allows subscribers to upload their own collection of music to be added to their virtual 'library' while YTM does not.

For some reason I think I used (still do?) have a Pandora account from back in the early days of them starting out. Now I'm curious if it still exists.... when I get home I'll be doing some exploring. :D Thinking out loud, I know Pandora can be controlled from my Fitbit Versa, something not supported by GPM, but at the same time most of my portable listening these days is done while wearing headphones and the new pair of Sony wireless headphones I have on backorder (from Sept! ) have controls right on them plus they work with Google Assistant so being able to use my watch for basic controls, while neat, isn't a deal breaker.

Oh, yep, I forgot to mention YouTube. That is actually how I started looking into streaming services lately. I've been creating personal playlists on YouTube for some now for listening to while at my desk but recently I've started walking a lot and wanted to listen to the playlists while walking. It was a good plan until I realized that Google disables YouTube playback if your phone is locked! The choice then was to either keep my phone unlocked while carrying it my pocket when walking or looking at alternatives. Ggggrrr. :censored:

I'm not familiar with any of them. Off to YouTube we go..... :D

Ooooh, I think I'd have ended up buying all of the promo discs just to see what might be on them. Every so often the promo discs will have a single on them mixed differently from the final version released to the retail channels.

I discover music a lot of different ways.
One example:
While listening to Youtube videos I pay attention to the "related videos" which yeilds a great number of new artists that grab my attention.

I was listening to
Beth Hart - You Belong To Me - 2/9/17 Keeping The Blues Alive Cruise

and as it was ending I looked at the related videos and saw one I had not yeat heard of so I clicked to it and WOW, Talented!

Shut Me Up (Acoustic Version) - Lindsay Ell - The Ell Sessions

Another thing I'll do with youtube is look for genre compilations that have an artist/song listing.
I let the video play and note the artists/songs that I like then look up those specific artists on youtube or the web (looking for their discography).

Here is an example

Whisky-Blues Vol 8

That particular video is linked to my "Blues" playlist but the artist listing is in the SHOW MORE info for the video (as well as on the video itself).

1. Will Smokey Logg - El Madrid
2. Cold Blue Steel - The Girl That Radiates
3. Jim Suhler And Monkey Beat - Where Were You When The Lights Went Out?
4. Michael Hardie - Pretenders Blues
5. Will Smokey Logg - That's Where The Money Goes
6. Mike Morgan - Well All Right Then
7. Jimmy Spacek & Heavy Traffic - Good Lookin Lady
8. Jack Morgan Band - Honeyman
9. Class Action - Midnight Moon
10. Jim Suhler And Monkey Beat - Doncha Hang Around My Door
11. Will Smokey Logg - Tom Cat
12. Bugs Henderson - Rock Me Baby
13. Gary Smith Blues Band - I Can't Seem To Snake This Blues
14. Kenny "Blue" Ray - Squeezin'
15. Wendy Dewitt And Blue Saloon - Hard Times
16. Chuck Vincent & Shuffle - Boogie Til We All Fall Down
17. Bluejeans - Somebody Told Me
18. Dough Jay - Watch Your Step
19. Stu Blank - Dimples

I also subscribe to genre uploaders like Don's Tunes and Red Grey Matter.
They post a lot of artists I haven't heard of before.

I found the Nimmo Brothers and KIng King from Blues Moose.

I also use the Music Map, Last FM which gives recommendations based on my scrobbling history.
Plus, I use Shoutcast Radio & HBR1 in Winamp.

Its getting harder and harder to stump Youtube on a song.
I find a lot of new artists from the movies I watch.
I google the sountrack listing then youtube search the song I like, so far, hasn't been any songs I coudn't find on youtube.
I watched a movie and found

Orenda Fink - High Ground

Forget which movie it was right now but I find a lot of NEW music from movies this way.

Plus I use Tune Find a lot which also has listings for TV Shows.

I agree: radio is off. A while back I was visiting a friend in Toronto [Can] and she had this rock station on. Except it was nothing but. No variety. Endless sameness. After half an hour my brain went lame. Here DownUnder things are crook. Endless corporate bilge pouring out ceaselessly. Same as ten years ago. I wont describe the sonic senescence. I get leads from weekend newspaper reviews. Rarely anything new. However just recently this woman was discovered for me.
bought the cd and the T shirt!

it is amazing where I find music - on some internet newspaper sites like Spiegel where I bought two cds from their mainly mainstream reviews like -culk- and one i can't remember yes I do! Friends of Gas---all too the indies

Making it.
If you've recorded anything, you're always welcome to post it here if you're comfortable sharing
I've found some promo samplers yard sailing also
At one point a friend was a DJ and was constantly getting promo samplers; it was a great way of hearing new music before it (if the act was lucky) hit the radio stations. On occasion there'd be something that I really dug but the act got no traction from stations and they'd never get anything to market.

I like to buy large boxes of cds at the local flea markets. Kinda like a grab bag. I rip them to mp3 and give them away free. Just gave my neighbor a huge box of cds I had in the spare room.

Another thing I've found is while playing a film with my GOM player, during the ending credits, I can rip the music in OGG vorbis format then convert that to mp3. GOM also rips to Wav format but I think OGG is cleaner.

It amazing how many really good songs are on low budget movies. They're not top of the charts songs but pretty good and different.

One Such Song:
The Dune (1984) {Princess Version} ending credits song. Still have no idea what the title is or who does it but it sounds a lot like Pink Floyd. Only the film which starts with the princess narration has the full song at the end.

In Little Monsters (2019) the song Shake It Off is a cover of Taylor Swift but done by Lupita Nyong'o & Alexander England (and the kids). The only version you can find is the Taylor Swift version but I ripped it from the end with no movie sounds. I like that version the best, even better than Taylor Swift's marketed version.

Here are the songs I've collected from movies. I didn't include the different versions of songs by the same artist but they are in there too. EX: I have 6 different versions of White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane. Doesn't Include whole album soundtracks.

thanks tom i learned a few things there! i like compilations and movie soundtracks, sometimes, especially today, bands will put out music on local compilations, some of them are unknown but awesome. this is a fun place to search
it takes all the sounds from videos and juices them....b

I also use mp3 juice. It plays the song in the browser but also offers it as download and direct links to your social media sites.

Years before computers were household I used to have multple long play cassette tapes where I would record radio play. I they went back and edited the tapes for the songs I wanted (I had a dual deck). I also had a dual deck VCR and did the same with TV shows and TV movies.
The problem was the songs , shows and movies were often edited, censored or modified.
