‘Star Trek’ Plans New Series With Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard – Rolling Stone

Star Trek producers revealed Saturday that Patrick Stewart will reprise the role of Star Trek: The Next Generation captain Jean-Luc Picard on the franchise’s new series.
The actor is also set to serve as executive producer on the series, which will air – like Star Trek Discovery – on CBS’ video-on-demand service All Access beginning in the fall of 2019.
Stewart portrayed the fan-beloved Picard during Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s original television run from 1987 to 1994; the series’ crew also starred in four feature films, with Picard last appearing in 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis.

My main question is;
Do we really need yet another Star Trek internet series?

I agree, there are a lot of science fiction stories to tell but is the Star Trek universe really the only way to tell them?
Are the writers so lazy they have to exploit Star Trek to be able to have a science fiction background?
Why not create something new and unique?
Why not borrow from some of the other thousands of science fiction television series?
Where are the ones based on Space 1999, Firefly, Babylon 5?

Patrick Stewart is a versitile actor. I'm sure he could bring other science fiction to life fairly easily.

Who says he needs to be bald?

My guess is that they think they can bank on the fan base of Star Trek to bring in ratings...or in this case, subscriber $$$ for their on-demand arm.

Would be interesting to see what sort of audience numbers they have for the newer ST series installments, compared to the newer, unique sci-fi series that I've watched in the past several years...namely, shows like Defiance (which was canceled), The Expanse (which is moving to Amazon), and Killjoys (still ongoing).

I watched the first season of Discovery.
While it was weird/different it was watchable.
The reboot-alternate Universe Star Trek movies are okay,
Thing is, the 'Federation' utopian setting seems old and busted to me.

What I would like to see is a Science Fiction series that stands on its own but includes Star Trek Universe interplay.

Like The Expanse that finds a Federation derelict ship. Granted, The Expanse probably wouldn't work but the cross-over idea is mainly what I'm referring to.
Perhaps The Orville could explore such a concept?

Imagine how The Orville/Star Trek merge would play out.
Sorta like a straight man/comic man routine.
The Orville and a Star Trek ship team up for a season against a common foe.
Then, if the Star Trek element is a hit, make a spin-off series on it.

Frankly, I don't give a damn.
While I do respect Patrick Stewart's acting career and I did enjoy his role as Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek:TNG I don't really see any reason to explore that character in depth in its own series.
To me, its just another lazy exercise to milk money from a fan-base.
Picard was only interesting in the Star Trek TNG environment. Nothing in and of the character was significant without the other character's interactions.
A series focused on Him alone would get boring pretty quick.
While Patrick Stewart would be able to play the role as written, the issue is not with his performance but the writing that would support the character.
Cashing in on the Star Trek dollar is understandable but what does it do to the memory of what was once a pretty good series?

Probably a hit. Why do we always have to go into the past of star trek, i'd love to see what came after voyager, can the federation carry on boldly going or will the run out of steam..... resistance is futile

Umm, perhaps you don't realize it but StarTrek, like Star Wars has alreay exceeded its potential.
How many times do we want to beat this dead horse?
The innovative, science fiction ceativity is long since lost.
That's the thing about REAL SCIENCE FICTION, it needs to go where No Man Has Ever Gone Before and Star Trek is no longer doing that, just look at the mess they call Discovery.
Spock, really?
Are the writers that devoid of inspiration the need to bring Spock into the story?
Really?
I don't give a damn if it is a different timeline, Why do they need Spock in the first place?
Screw Star Trek.

Frankly, it pisses me off the writers are so lazy.

Up to episode 4 and yeah a tendency toward WOKE in places, but interesting enough season plot.

Rather than continued attacks on Picard perhaps they could focus on the cooler aspect of a certain race having a Borg cube and the whole AI thing.

I think I stopped watching after that. I don't mind the political correctness because that's been part of the franchise from the beginning (e.g., the international crew, Kirk and Uhura's kiss, etc.), but they can't do it in a subtle manner, which is one hallmark of very good writing. Also, the franchise has been known to focus more on using wits and intelligence rather than brawn, and in shows in conflict resolved through that rather than through physical fights. Finally, stories usually end with some ambivalence so that viewers can reflect on the ending.

That's the only reason I watched Season 1, receiving it on DVD for this past Christmas.
Thought it was okay, but nothing spectacular.

Pretty well established seasons 1 and 2 were absolute garbage... The 3rd season was supposedly so much better with a new showrunner, but two episodes in and looks like the same old stuff again...

It's literally too dark to see...

I just want to know if anybody from the TNG era ended up with a happy life?

Last year I treated myself to a 4K TV, finally upgrading it from my old still-working Panasonic 1080i plasma, and while it has a great picture I find myself having to change the display settings to 'vivid' with a lot of the recent shows like Picard and Willow. I've assumed it was just part of getting older. :(
