I've finally watched Battleship as well and, while it was a bad movie, it was no where as bad as I was expecting it to be. Rihanna is not an actress, not even close to it, so fortunately she it not a major character. Aside from a few questionable story points, like how a 26-year-old with a criminal record not only ends up in the US Navy but quickly becomes an officer even though he is known for goofing off & screwing up, it wasn't a bad 'popcorn' action movie.
Some elements, like the grid used for firing at the enemy ships, seemed a bit forced to comply with the theme of the game and may not have been as natural to the story as they should have been though they did act as nice little easter eggs for viewers familiar with the game. My biggest complaint would have to be that it really isn't made clear that the aliens started with hostile intentions as much as they were responding to the actions towards them. Yes, the aliens are brutal but it was the humans who fired a warning shot at them first. My guess is that in a different edit of the script it was explained better because there is a scene, nearly straight out of Independence Day, where an alien makes physical contact with movie hero and the hero gets a vision of the aliens waging a war on a unspecified planet against an unspecified opponent.
So, yes, the movie has a few issues but if you're looking for a simple action movie to just sit back and not think about too much then Battleship fits the bill.
