A Battlestar Galactica prequel entitled Caprica has reportedly been confirmed by the Sci Fi Channel.

According to Variety, the network's president David Howe announced the production of a two-hour pilot during a presentation in New York on Tuesday. Caprica, named after the planet conquered by the villainous Cylons, will be written by Rene Aubuchon and Ronald D Moore, with Jeff Reiner set to direct. Casting will reportedly begin shortly.

Battlestar Galactica's fourth season, due to be screened in the UK from early April, will be its last. It is currently unknown whether any actors will reprise their roles from the show in Caprica.

I just hope Caprica doesn't turn out to be a cheap way of keeping BSG name around (ala the original BSG and BSG:1980).

It's supposedly a new concept, and with Ron Moore writing I have hope it will be good. It is supposed to debut in the fall, but they have not started shooting yet. The concept is something like "Dallas" in space, with the focus on the previous generation of Adamas and a frenemy family.
