Announcements Excluding Forums When Searching

A change was implemented tonight that affects all existing members!

Prior to tonight there was a simple "Yes / No" option in the User Control Panel asking if you wanted to include the Usenet forums when viewing new posts and when searching. While that method worked it did not work very cleanly. What that means is that it resulted in unneeded queries to the database nearly every time somebody did a search. That, my friends, is a very bad thing. Rule of thumb... the less database queries the better.

The new system eliminates the extra queries while at the same time allowing you, our community members, greater flexibility in deciding what forums to exclude. Previously it was an "all or nothing" option; either all of the Usenet forums were excluded or they weren't. Now you can exclude almost any of the forums from appearing, even most of the Cool Sci-Fi forums. That means, for example, if you want to exclude all of the UseNet forums except for the Doctor Who, and exclude all of the local forums except the Sci-Fi & Fantasy Discussion forum it is now just a matter of a few mouse clicks.

Please see this new FAQ on where to find the new option and instructions on how to make your selections.

All existing Cool Sci-Fi members have been defaulted to have the Usenet forums excluded. All new members will start with a clean slate.

Please us know ASAP if you have any questions with the new option or if you have any problems.

Thanks,
The Cool Sci-Fi Team
