Favourite SciFi TV series

What is everyone's favourite Sci Fi TV series of all time & why?

My top 5 favourites are:

5th favourite: Babylon 5 - I like the story arc running thu season 3&4 in particular

4th: Survivors (the old one) - some great stories e.g. Fourth Horseman, Law & Order

3rd: BSG (the new one) - liked how the story develops & the characters aren't black and white

2nd: Blakes 7 - some stunning episodes (the very first one, for example, introduces the shocking idea of a police state getting rid of its political enemies by framing them as paedophiles & brain washing kids into believing that the abuse was real so that they'd make credible witnesses) & stunning acting/characters (eg Avon, Servalan)

1st: Dr Who - such a unique concept & so many classic stories and characters over the years.

I can think of others like Firefly & Star Trek that nearly but not quite make it on my top 5 list.

Here are my top 5 favorites:
5. Quantum Leap: Each episode gave Sam a chance to step in another person's shoes, so to speak, and thus the viewer was afforded that same opportunity, in a sense.
4. The Twilight Zone: No two episodes ever seemed the same. The themes were very surreal mostly, full of mystery and added humor at times.
3. Star Trek: The Next Generation: Show had interesting main characters, and even an interesting reoccuring villain of sorts in "Q". The show had it's mix of adventure, mystery & suspense, but felt very cerebral.
2. Star Trek: My favorite characters in sci fi history: Capt. Kirk, Mr. Spock, Bones and Scotty. The show may have had a low budget look most of the time, but I give this one high marks because it was a swashbuckling adventure set in space! No, I don't dress up in a Star Trek costume (not that there's anything wrong with that), but if there ever was a sci fi show to tempt me....this would be the one.
1. The Walking Dead: Yes, this show is a hot trend right now, but for anybody who doesn't watch it, you're really missing out. This show is so compelling and well written, it is downright scary. Zombie movies are cool, but you never really get the chance to know the characters or care about them. Not so, with this awesome drama. It has intrigue, action, adventure and when the plot thickens......well, let's just say it REALLY THICKENS! This is a character/relationship driven drama that just happens to have some zombies thrown in for good measure. Can't wait for the next season!

lets see my top 5 are.

1- grimm really cool show I like the way the story line is

2- BSG the original I like the new one but the original is going to be my fav

3- the walking dead really cool never read the comics and won't til the series is over the survivors need to learn what the right type of vehicles to get though...APC's 100% zombie proof.

4- Dr.who I am still a big fan of the show and my fav doctor will always be Tom Baker

SG-1 love the show I mean really it has Macgyver in it.

HHhhmmm..... thinking back to growing up in the 70's most of the series I really love date back to that period.

  • Star Trek
  • Battlestar Galactica (the original of course)
  • Doctor Who (the newer actors are good but for me Tom Baker will always be the Doctor)
  • Twilight Zone (not strictly a sci-fi series but had enough episodes that it could qualify)
  • The Prisoner

If we were to expand that list to include other genre series, then Kolchak: The Night Stalker has to be in there as well!

Hmmm, being a absolute Star trek fan and I love all the series produced by the franchise, except "Enterprise" (blah) lol. I will lump all together. So here goes:

1. Star Trek (all series, including Voyager, Deep Space Nine, The Next Generation and of course the Original Series. On a sidenote, I would like to add that Deep Space Nine was an underestimated show and it had great storylines that are apparent in today's society with subject lines like terrorism and racism. It didn't really get good till Season 3 so Netflix it, you'll be hooked like I was! And the best thing about the Original Series had to be Kirk's hairpiece!

2. Battlestar Galactica, (the new one, yeah I'm a sellout, I like the new one, that kid and that robot dog in the original pissed me off way too much! lol)

3. Sliders - it was underestimated, it had a cool concept and I liked the show

4. The Twilight Zone - I agree with the person who posted this. the original black and white half hour shorts: I can watch those marathons for hours!

5. The X-Files - Mulder, Scully, aliens, no more needs to be said.

:)

2. Battlestar Galactica, (the new one, yeah I'm a sellout, I like the new one, that kid and that robot dog in the original pissed me off way too much! lol)
Come on... how could you not like a robot dog! :D

3. Sliders - it was underestimated, it had a cool concept and I liked the show
That was indeed a good show. Had a pretty good diverse cast of characters and I still cringe a little bit when I think about the episode that had the alternate world full of giant spiders. I also think about that final episode and feel sad a little bit over a creaky hinge.

Come on... how could you not like a robot dog! :D

no kiddig eh just love that mutt :)

Kevin thanks for mentioning Kolchak: The Night Stalker under you shows I had forgotten about watching that show I just loved it there is talk of a movie with Jonny Depp.

The Twilight Zone is my favorite series. I can watch this as many times as I can. I like the ironic twist of the story and it is very recommended for those who loves to watch sci-fi tv series.

Yeah, Night Gallery was a good show too. Outer Limits, however, I can take or leave. Amazing Stories from the mid to late 80s was a really strong show too. If my memory serves me, Spielberg was the creator of this show.

I actually never seen the Night Gallery...Hmmm maybe I can Netflix it. I know of the Outer Limits, I remember watching a few and my mind kind of dwindled, lol. Good to know though, thanks!

Amazing Stories from the mid to late 80s was a really strong show too. If my memory serves me, Spielberg was the creator of this show.
Ah, I had nearly forgotten about Amazing Stories! Yep, that was by Spielberg.

I still remember some of the episodes, in particular one about a WWII bomber that was damaged on it's flight back. The landing gear wouldn't open and there was a crewman in the 'belly' pod manning the gun. Even if they ditched over water it wouldn't have mattered because the hatch to the belly pod was damaged and they couldn't get him out. That another episode about a ghost train cutting through the middle of a farm I still remember pretty clearly.

I wonder if they are on Netflix.... :)
