Agreed. I hate to fish in RL but I like it as a trade in games.
Let's see....
Lineage 2 has fishing now where you actively work at timing and recognizing changing icons to know what button to push in hopes of catching that gettaway fish. Very interactive. Most interactive I've seen yet. Not easy street.
EQ has the classic hit button, animate casting line. Occasionally toss in cute emote message.. like "You spill your beer while trying to pull in your line." Boring system however.
WoW system isn't too bad, a copy of EQ with the "catch the bobby" twist to it.
Daoc doesn't have fishing... rotten buggers.
EQ2 has fishing but it's actually more boring than EQ live's.
Can't recall if FXII has it.
Anyhow... What I'd love to see...
Choices in fishing.
One style is the laid back hit the button nothing overly exciting happens. Like RL... so Non-interactive you could prob read a book while doing it.
Second style is the more interactive game-in-a-game style, like Lineage2 does it. Requires work to catch that neato fishy.
Perhaps another style... like deep sea fishing. My father used to do that with us way back when. Take the weekend off and hit the Atlantic Ocean for some deep sea fishing. Strap into a chair and try to catch those BIG, hard to reel in mongo fishes or big salmon.
Any styles I'm missing?
