"Lost," (ABC, premieres Sept. 22). In the bizarro new world order of television, ABC gets two new shows in our Top 5 and UPN another. "Lost" may well prove to be the season's biggest surprise because it gives out in spades what most people are seeking from television: entertainment. In this case, to everyone's benefit, it's done smartly and stylishly. J.J. Abrams of "Alias" fame delivers the goods again with a premise that seems tired. A plane crashes (it's spectacular and scary, by the way) and strands 48 people and a dog on a remote island. Holy Gilligan's Island, Batman, what could be more stock than that? Well, you could throw in a hint of "Jurassic Park." It's true. There are so many familiar elements here you could spend the hour counting the influences. But the payoff is that Abrams does it all stunningly, with more than a few twists along the way. You have to love a guy who's ready to launch a cast of 48 in prime time. This thing is geared to run seven years at a minimum, so let's hope it gets out of the gate. Matthew Fox ("Party of Five") is the nominal head of this mega ensemble, and he makes a riveting hero -- one of countless surprises along the way. This is a thriller with intrigue --

because the tropical island just may or may not be inhabited, but it definitely has a Big Bad on it, and possibly a menagerie of evil, too.
