Part 9 - March 10, 2043
“Mom guess what!” Sydney giggled after school as she climbed in her mother’s car.
“What Syd?” Sam smiled.
“I got into the play!” Sydney squealed.
“Oh that’s wonderful sweetie. What are you playing?”
“Just one of the mermaids. But I get two lines!” She beamed.
“Awesome.” Sam laughed at her daughter’s excitement. “You’ll have to tell your father.”
“Okay.” Sydney smiled. “Mom how’s your new book?”
“It’s good, why?”
“Because Jessica said that her mom said you should have stopped at the second one.”
“Well she shouldn’t have said that, besides it doesn’t matter.” Sam said.
“I told her that just because your books aren’t on the best sellers like Grandma’s books are doesn’t mean they’re not really, really good.”
“Thank you dear.” Sam smiled at her.

“Dad guess what!” Sydney shouted when her father came home that evening.
Chris kissed his wife hello and then smiled at his daughter. “What pumpkin?”
“I’m the mermaid in Peter Pan!” She grinned.
“Whoa score. Gimmie five!” He said as he held out his flat palm. Sydney grinned and smacked it as hard as she could. “Oh no you broke me...” Chris said as he pretended to fall on the floor.
“Dad you’re so crazy.” Sydney rolled her eyes.
“I know your mom tells me every day. Did you finish your homework?” He asked.
“Yep.” She smiled.
“Go help your mom set the dinner table then.” Chris said.
“Okay.” She said as she walked off towards the cabinet.
Chris walked upstairs to change out of his work clothes and he found Sam putting away laundry in their room. He walked up behind her and snaked his arms around her waist.
“Chris.” She giggled.
“Hey beautiful.” He whispered into her ear.
“Hi.”
“I just wanted to say again how amazing you were last night.” He smiled.
“Chris.” She giggled. “Sydney could hear you.”
“No she’s downstairs.” He said as he kissed her passionately.
“Mm you were amazing yourself you know.” Sam smiled.
Chris nodded. “Syd should fall asleep early more often.”
“Oh yeah I’m sure she’d love that.” Sam laughed.
“MOM! Something on the stove is hissing!” Sydney called from downstairs.
“Oh felgercarb! I’ll be right there.” Sam called as she rushed down the stairs.
~*Two Weeks Later*~
“Hey Mom,” Sam smiled as walked into her parent’s house. “Hey Jakey! How’s my favorite nephew?”
“Good.” Five year old Jake smiled.
“Good.” Sam laughed as she ruffled his hair.
“How are you Sam?” Sydney asked.
“Alright...” She sighed.
“You don’t sound alright.” Sydney said.
“Well it’s just... I’ve got this funny feeling...”
“Funny feeling?” Sydney asked.
“Yeah... I think I’m pregnant.” Sam said quietly so Jake wouldn’t hear.
“Really?” Sydney asked.
“Yeah I mean... I don’t know... I can’t tell...” Sam sighed.
“Did you and Chris ever talk about more children?” Sydney asked.
“Yeah but... I guess we always just said ‘maybe later’... and I’m almost 43... I just thought that ship had sailed.”
“Do you want another baby?” Sydney asked.
“I dunno.... I look at Jake and he’s just so cute.” Sam smiled. “Maybe I’d like another one.”
“Yeah.” Sydney smiled. “Do you even know how pregnant you are?”
“Oh yeah.” Sam laughed.
Sydney laughed too. “I see the date isn’t in question.”
“Nope.” Sam shook her head. “Only about... two weeks though.”
“Then maybe you should go to the doctor to find out for sure.” Sydney told her.
“Probably... I just hope Chris doesn’t freak out.”
