THEY SAY
According to Wikipedia the latest update on this project is that Sony has recruited The Office writer-producers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg to work on a new instalment of the ‘Eighties franchise that starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Harold Ramis as bumbling ghost-hunting scientists.

The original filmmakers, including director Ivan Reitman, and cast are aware of the project and apparently involved in its development. Some original cast members might be involved, but the focus will be on a new Ghostbusters team.

Will it ever get made? Probably (see why below). However the 2010 release date cited by many Web sites is probably on the optimistic side. Don’t expect to see it before the Mayan calendar ends in 2012 and we all die horribly . . .

WE SAY
A movie which no-one wants to get see made except for: (a) nostalgic ageing twentysomethingers who saw the original as impressionable kids back in 1984 and have forgotten just what a big letdown Ghostbusters II was; and
(b) Sony accountants.

The first film made $292 million worldwide, and the 1989 sequel made another $215 million globally. Ghostbusters was Sony’s biggest hit movie franchise ever until Men in Black and the Spider-man movies. (Obviously a Men in Black 3 and Spider-man 4 are also in the pipeline.)

With disappointing Sony PlayStation 3 and BLU-RAY sales one can only assume that this huge multinational corporation is as strapped for cash as the rest of us in these trying times . . .
