Chapter 8
Sydney POV
I can't remember the last time I slept as good as I did last night.
Actually, it was probably the first time I had been with Vaughn.
I climbed out of bed and made my way into the kitchen, where Rachel was eating a bowl of cereal.
"Well, good morning Sunshine." She said practically beaming at me.
"Good morning. What time is it?" I said pouring myself a bowl of cereal.
"11: 30."
"Wow. I slept later than you."
"Yeh. That's probably because you're usually up at the crack of dawn."
I finished up my breakfast and placed our empty bowls in the sink.
"So.. how long are you going to act like nothing happened with you and the hottie last night?" Rachel asked as I tried to make sense of the morning paper.
I've been down
But now I'm blessed
I felt a revelation coming around
I guess it's right

"What are you talking about? Me and Vaughn?"
"Obviously." She said scooting her chair closer to mine.
"Nothing happened. We just.. talked."
"Yeh. That's why you've been reading the same paragraph about increasing hair loss in women."
"Ok. Do you really wanna know?"
"No. I figured I'd get you to this point then give up. Of course I want to know!!"
"We're going on a date tonight." I said smiling from ear to ear.

"That's it." She said, eyebrows raised.
I nodded.
"That's why you're all giddy and grinning like an idiot?"
"Yeh. Why is that so hard to believe?"
"I don't know. I figured you would have at least made out with him or something to be acting all .. smitten."
"Sorry to disappoint you. All we did was kiss and it was just for a minute."
"Why?"
"I stopped it. We have too much history to just start back like we used to be."
"Whatever, girl. You are totally smitten."
"No I'm not."
"Yes you are. You're the smitten kitten."
She walked into the living room and plopped down on the sofa.
"So ya'll are going out tonight?"
"Yes. He's coming at 6."
"Always use protection, Syd." She said flicking on the t.v..
"I can't believe you."
I smacked her on the back of the head on my way to take a shower.
"You know you love me." She shouted.
Vaughn arrived promptly at 6.
Always one to be on time.
I was dressed in a simple, short, black dress.
Vaughn's green polo shirt made his eyes even more gorgeous than usual.

"You look.. amazing." He said eyeing me from head to toe.
"Thanks. You too."
"You ready?"
"Yeh. Just let me grab my purse."
"Bye, Rach!" I shouted before following Vaughn outside and shutting the door.
The restaurant was a small, romantic place downtown.
As I read over my menu, I noticed that Vaughn's eyes had not left me since we arrived.
"What?" I finally asked laying my menu on the table.
"Just.. you. You're so ..
amazing."

I blushed under his gaze.
"Vaughn.. I'm nowhere near amazing."
"Why can't you just take a compliment." He said smilng widely.
"Fine. Thank you."
"You're very welcome."
Dinner passed by smoothely.
Before I knew it we were on the way home.
In that moment, riding quietly down the highway,
I realized that that was all I had ever wanted.
To simply be with this man.
It's a cliche, but he totally, absolutely completes me.
I guess you could say he had me at hello.
When minutes turn to days and years

We walked hand-in-hand into my apartment to find it abandoned.
I guess Rachel went out.
I kicked my shoes off and fell onto the couch.
"I'm stuffed." I said rubbing my stomach.
"Me too." He said sitting down as well.
"So.. now what?" I said looking over at him.
"I don't know. On our last first date we kinda .. you know.." He said grinning.
"Yeh. That's different though. We had been waiting so long to be together."
"And the past 2 years don't count as waiting for each other?"
"Well technically, it was only a couple of days for me."
"Well it was a couple of hundred days for me."
"Yeh, yeh, you poor thing." I said giggling.
I can honestly say I don't giggle.
Somehow Vaughn makes me feel like a 13 year old girl.
Maybe I am the smitten kitten, as Rachel so eloquently puts it.
Just as we get quiet I hear rain pouring outside.
"It has rained so much since I've gotten here." I said rubbing the sleep from my eyes.
"I thought it never rained here." He said moving to look out the front window.
"It's coming a flook out there."
I followed him to the window to see the freak rainstorm for myself.
"I hope Rachel is somewhere she can stay the night." I said looking up at him.
"I don't think it would be a good idea to drive in this kind of weather."
"Yeh. Probably not." He said meeting my eyes.
"I know I said we should take it slow, but if you want, you can stay here tonight."
"If you're ok with it.."
"Yeh. It's fine, but.. where are you going to sleep?" I bit my lip nervously.
"I'll just sleep on the couch."
"Vaughn, there's no way you'll fit on that couch. I'll sleep in here and you can stay in my room."
"It's ok, Syd. I'll be fine." He said defiantly.
"Ok, if you say so. I'll go get some blankets and a pillow for you."
I walked into my bedroom to find only 2 pillows.
One of them being the one I sleep with.
I grabbed a quilt out of my dresser, and went back into the living room to find Vaughn trying to situate himself on the not-so-long couch.
"Ok. You are not sleeping in here." I said tossing the pillow and blankets on a chair.
"Where do you suggest I sleep then?" He looked at me questioningly.
"With me."
"Sydney.."
"Vaughn, we've done more than sleep in the same bed. I think we'll be ok." I gave a soft laugh and he reluctantly agreed.
"Ok. But if you feel in the least bit awkward, tell me and I'll sleep on the couch or something."
"Ok." I grabbed the pillow and led him into my room.
