Chapter 9

Vaughn POV

I woke up with a wisp of brown hair across my face.
I was startled for a moment.
Then I realized where I was.

Sydney rarely woke up before me.

I lay quietly. Just staring at her.
Her feet rubbed softly against mine as her eyes fluttered open.

"Hi." She said smiling from ear to ear.

"Hey."

I tucked her hair behind her ear.
My fingers lingered softly on her cheek.

What day is it? And in what month?
This clock never seemed so alive
I can't keep up and I can't back down
I've been losing so much time

"What do you want to do today?" I said propping my head up on my hand.

"Whatever you want to do."

"Well.. I'm fine just being here with you."

"Vaughn, you're making me blush."
She said covering her face with the sheet.

She pulled the sheet from her face.

Before any other conversation began, the phone broke the silence.

"Hello?" Sydney said. "Rachel." she mouthed at me.

Her and Rachel's conversation amused me.
Mostly because Sydney laughed the majority of the time.
I'm glad she found such a great friend out here.

Cause it's you and me and all other people with nothing to do
Nothing to lose
And it's you and me and all other people
And I don't know why, I can't keep my eyes off of you

After all the girl-talk and chit-chat, she placed the phone back in the cradle.
She rolled over and gave me a mischievous grin.

I know that grin.
It's not a good thing.

"What's in that head of yours?"

"Nothing."

"Well, I already knew that."

She slapped me half-heartedly and faked shock.

"Hey, woman. I'm just kidding."

"I know. I was thinking about that day we played hockey."

"I think it was more like, I played and you.. tried."
This remark only got me another slap to the back of my head.

All of the things that I want to say just aren't doming out right
I'm tripping on words
You've got my head spinning
I don't know where to go from here

"Vaughn, I'm trying to have a serious conversation here." Sydney said sitting up against the headboard.

"I know, I know. Sorry." I said sitting up as well. "That was a great day. The two things I love most: hockey and you."

I noticed her blush as she stared down at her hands.

"We should go again sometime."

"We should."

We settled into a comfortable silence long enough to hear a loud stomach growl.

"I'm starving." She said laughing softly.

"I can tell."

Cause it's you and me and all other people with nothing to do
Nothing to prove
And it's you and me and all other people
And I don't know why, I can't keep my eyes off of you

After eating breakfast together, I left Sydney's apartment.
I didn't want her to feel pressured into anything so I gave her some space.

Around 5:30 that night, I got a phone call.
It was Sydney.

"Ok, so I know we didn't plan anything this morning, but I figured you'd at least call me." She almost yelled into the receiver.

"I didn't call because.." I started

"No, Vaughn. I can't believe that we've only been on one date and you've already done something stupid. Maybe this is just a mistake."

"If you'd let me explain," I was met with silence, "I had a surprise for you."

"Oh." I could tell she was blushing.
The thought of it made me laugh.

"I'm coming to get you at 7. If that's ok with you, I mean."

"Yeah. Of course. Bye Vaughn."

"I'll talk to you later."

There's something about you now
I can't quite figure out
Everything she does is beautiful
Everything she does is right

I half-way thought she would've figured out what I had planned.
But amazingly enough she had no clue.

"Vaughnnnn, please tell me." She said giving me her best puppy dog face.

"No, Syd. You'll find out in a few minutes."

She crossed her arms and looked unamusedly out the window.

"I guess little Miss Super Spy was finally outsmarted."
I said as we pulled into a local skating rink.

"This is what you had me all worked up about?" She said raising her eyebrows at me.

"Well, I kinda thought you'd be a little more excited."

"I am. I just.. sorry."

"It's ok. But now you'll have to open your own door."
I climbed out of the car and waited patiently for her at the rear of the car.

"It took me a minute. I forgot how to operate those new so-called 'doors'."
She said sarcastically.

We walked hand-in-hand into the rink filled with people.
We laced up the skates I brought, and skated out amongst the crowd.

Skating near us was a boy and girl, who looked to be about 17.
The boy was skating backwards, holding onto the girl's hands, teaching her how to skate.

"How sweet is that?" Sydney asked linking our arms together.

Cause it's you and me and all other people with nothing to do
Nothing to lose
And it's you and me and all other people
And I don't know why, I can't keep my eyes off of you
And me and all other people with nothing to do
Nothing to prove
And it's you and me and all other people
And I don't know why, I can't keep my eyes off of you

"Adorable." I said smiling down at her.

She pulled away from me and took off down the ice.
The sight of her, skating, or wobbling, in front of me made me stop dead in my tracks.

That is, until the afore-mentioned teens bumbed Sydney accidentally.
She went down, flat on her back.

I rushed over to her, scared she had been seriously injured.

"Syd? Are you okay?"
She met me with a blank stare.
She reached out her hand, so I grabbed it, intending to pull her up.

However, I ended up sprawled out beside her.
I looked over at her questioningly, and she erupted into a fit of laughter.

"I cannot believe you fell for that." She said smiling from ear to ear.

"Excuse me for being a kind considerate person." I joked.

"Yeah, yeah. I guess I'm Miss Super Spy after all."

"I guess so."

We laid there several more minutes.
Just staring at each other.
When I finally tore my eyes away from her, I noticed that the rink was practically deserted.

"I think we scared everyone away."

"Probably, because of the woman laughing hysterically in the middle of the ice."

"Could be."

I don't know how much longer we laid there.
But I wasn't about the end whatever we had going.

This woman captivated me in every way.
She had absolute control over me.
Not that I was complaining.

What day is it?
And in what month?
This clock never seemed so alive
