Well, I took the plunge and just ordered a home NAS solution, a Synology DS411slim & four 1TB drives to go along with it. 
For the longest time I was using an external USB hard-drive plugged into our network router for storage but between multiple users in the house and the fear of backups (eg: what happens to the one single external drive in case of failure) it was time to take the plunge.
The newtoy essential gear should be here for next weekend so if hear me grumbling you'll know why.
