By doing challenges you can bump up the points thing. But the warning saying you lost a point when you click on your points will always be there...if that makes sense.

Points can also be added by any staff member for any reason. Regulars to the Jen/Ben and Gartan threads, for example, get them for helping me out and keeping the thread resembling sane.
