Here's a new fic I wrote in my spare time. It's light and fluffy fun for summer. It's actually downright cheesy and I am not afraid to admit it. But I had fun writing it and thanks to Tracey for her feedback. Enjoy. It's completely done, so I'm going to update once a day - so just check back! The only way I won't is if I lose internet power b/c of this intense heat, so no PM's, but I'll try to remember to put the links to each new posting in the first post like some other people do.
This is an S/V romancey fic. A/U of course.
Disclaimer: I own nothing. I just play with the characters.
Rating: Pg-Pg-13. nothing serious.
I hope you like it...and yes, I know it is full on cheese. But it's summer. I'm entitled. And I am posting whether people read or not.
In The Blink of an Eye:
Things could change so fast. All you need is a little faith.
Chapter 1:
“I hate him. I hate him so much. I‘m so outta here. High school is finished and I’m legally an adult now. I don’t need his felgercarb or his money.” Sydney Bristow was bustling around her childhood room, throwing various belongings into several duffle bags. That morning had been her high school graduation and her father didn’t show up, again.
He had left some flimsy excuse on her cell phone about being called out of town for an important business meeting, but he left her graduation gift in the driveway. A brand new, 2007 (not even released to the general public) silver Lexus.
She was pissed. He had never been around for her, not since her mother died 12 years ago. She had been valedictorian of the school and just wanted her father there to see her speech, yet he disappointed her once again.
Once the caps had been thrown in the air, Sydney decided she was leaving for good and starting her own life, away from him. Knowing her father, it would take a week for him to notice and part of her even doubted that he’d care.

The following morning, I used my new car to run one single errand, a trip to the bank to close out my savings account. The cashier handed me $3,000 of my account in cash and the rest in a cashiers check for me to deposit in my new bank.
After dropping the car off at home, I called a cab and made my way to the bus station. After staring at the schedule for a few minutes, I made my decision and walked up to the ticket window.
“I’d like a one way ticket to Las Vegas, please.” I handed over the money and made my way to the bus. After putting my bags in the luggage compartment under the bus, I settled myself into a seat and knew that in just four short hours I’d be starting a completely new life.
~~~
Two hours into the ride, the guy who had been dozing next to me woke up. He looked about my age and he stared at me a few minutes before speaking.
“You don’t look like you are from Vegas.”
I turned and smiled. “You’re right. I’m moving there. I grew up in LA.”
“Sweet, you going to school there?”
“Not yet, just starting a new life.”
“Sounds good. I’m Chris, by the way. I’m from Vegas but I was visiting my friend in LA. He goes to school there and he stayed for summer classes. I’m starting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in the fall. I just finished high school.”
“Me too! Well, I mean, I just graduated. Oh, and my name is Sydney.”
“Hi, Sydney. Do you have a place to live?”
I looked down. “No. I hadn’t gotten that far. Any recommendations?”
Chris thought for a moment. “There are some pretty reasonably priced apartments right off the strip on East Tropicana Avenue. I have some buddies that live there. It’s about two blocks from the strip, which is where I assume you’ll probably get a job, and the rent is decent. Plus, it’s on the bus line and it has a pool. The complex is called Tropicana Springs.”
“Thanks, that’s really helpful information.”
“No sweat. What kind of job were you going to get?”
“Probably just waitressing or something. I don’t want to be a showgirl and I’m not old enough to work in the bars or casinos yet.”
“So what made you head to Vegas?”
“I thought it would be a fun atmosphere and somewhere I can be myself and just melt into the crowd.”
He nodded. “It’s fun, for sure, if you don’t mind all the tourists. I bet I can help you out even more…”
I was surprised. “Oh yeah? How?”
“My cousin is one of the manager’s for Emeril’s in the MGM. That’s one of the best restaurants on the strip. I can talk to him about interviewing you for a waitressing position.”
“You’d do that? For me? But you just met me!”
Chris smiled shyly. “Well, you seem like a really nice and intelligent girl. It’s hard to make friends in Vegas, so I want to help you out.”
“Thank you so much. You have no idea what this means to me.”
“It’s no problem. Hang on, I’m going to call my cousin right now.” Chris pulled out a cell phone, dialed a number and briefly spoke to whoever answered. A few minutes later he hung up, turned to Sydney, and smiled. “You have an interview tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. My cousin’s name is Dave. He said they just put up postings for four new waitresses.”
I squealed and quickly hugged Chris. “You are awesome. I honestly can’t thank you enough.”
For the rest of the ride, we chatted and got along fabulously. Chris noticed they were about ten minutes away from the bus depot and looked at me. “So, do you have a cell phone or something? I hope we can stay friends.”
“I’d love to, but I’m getting a new phone when I get to town. How about you give me your number and I promise to call you when I am settled. Or, if all goes well tomorrow, you may be able to find me at the MGM.”
Chris smiled and gave me his information. A few minutes later we parted ways and I hailed a cab to take me to the apartment complex Chris mentioned. It was 3:30 in the afternoon and I prayed the leasing office was still open.
I was in luck; not only was the office open, they had several vacant apartments that were furnished. I signed a lease immediately and moments later I was standing in my very own apartment for the first time. I felt like life was better already and all I needed was for my interview to go well tomorrow. Looking around the apartment, I decided to head out to a mall and get some basic essentials like sheets and towels.
In addition to the necessities, I picked up a new cell phone and immediately programmed Chris’ information into it. Things were working out so far and I went to sleep with a smile on my face for the first time in a long time.
>o<
Morning came and I woke up with the same smile. I showered, picked out a nice outfit and made my way to Las Vegas Boulevard, the main strip. I quickly located the MGM hotel and made my way into Emeril’s inquiring after Dave. He came out to greet me and we sat down at one of the empty tables to talk.
“So my cousin tells me you’re quite intelligent and hard working. Have you ever waitressed before?”
“Yes, Sir. I worked for three years as a caterer for an event firm. They would send us to formal parties like sweet sixteen’s or weddings where we would serve food, bus tables and circulate drinks.”
“Tell me more about that.” After speaking for fifteen more minutes, Dave hired me on the spot and told me to report back for the training shift that started the next day at ten in the morning. He said to go buy several pairs of black pants and incredibly comfortable black shoes. He even recommended several stores that his waitresses favored for shoes.
“Thanks again, Dave. I’m very excited about this opportunity.”
“Certainly. I trust my cousin. I look forward to seeing you tomorrow, Sydney. Have a great day, and welcome to Las Vegas.”
I smiled and practically floated out of the restaurant, disbelieving my good fortune. As soon as I was out of earshot from the restaurant, I pulled out my cell and called the only number programmed.
“Hello?”
“Chris, it’s Sydney Bristow…from the bus.”
“Hey! How is it going?”
“Great. I owe you so much. Not only did I get an apartment where you suggested but I got the job at Emeril’s. If I hadn’t met you on the bus, I’d probably be wandering Vegas lost right now.”
Chris chuckled and assured me that I would have found my way without him.
After chatting a few more minutes, I invited him to dinner to repay him for his kindness. He accepted and we agreed to meet up at Margaritaville in the Flamingo hotel at six.
~~~
Six came and I was standing outside the restaurant, watching the tourists walk by. Suddenly, a pair of hands covered my eyes.
“Guess who?”
“Hmm…if this isn’t Chris, then I am in some major trouble.”
He chuckled and swung me around into a hug. “I’m really happy you got the job, Sydney! You are going to make some kick ass tips. All the celebrities eat there.”
I giggled and we headed inside and proceeded to have a great time at dinner.
Towards the end of the meal, Chris looked into my eyes and saw a hint of sadness in them. “Hey…not to be nosey or anything, but how did you end up here? I mean, you look like the kind of girl who would be getting ready for college now.”
My face slightly mirrored the sadness in my eyes. “Hey…you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to,” he continued. “I was just being my nosey self.”
I gave him a small smile. “No…I may as well tell you. Yes…I would be getting ready for college this summer. But I sort of upped and left once I graduated. It was just my dad and I. My mom died when I was six, and he hasn’t been around since. He really was never there for me and the last straw was not showing up to my high school graduation, which I was Valedictorian for, and thinking he can buy my forgiveness with a brand new car. So I left it all. I left him, the car, my cell phone…everything. I came to be on my own. Maybe I’ll make enough money to start school here next semester or something.” I continued my story while Chris sat in awe.
“Wow. You are so brave. Well, I’m glad I met you because you are welcome to hang out with me and my friends and everything. And you should come meet my family. That way if you ever need any sort of parental advice, you can go to my parents. They’d love you.”
“That’s really nice, but I’ll be okay. I raised myself as it is!”
“Hey. You don’t have to be so brave all the time. Not anymore.” I thanked Chris with a hug and we left the restaurant. He walked me around the strip a bit and showed me the volcano that went off at the Mirage every half hour and the dancing water fountains at the Bellagio. Soon I said I needed to go to sleep because I started work the next day and he bid me good night.
The next two months flew by as I settled into my new life in Las Vegas. My apartment started to come together and I actually loved my job. The clientele of the restaurant were normally incredibly wealthy people and the tips I made each night added up. Plus, I tried to be so friendly and upbeat that even the crankiest of patrons adored me and I scored huge tips constantly. I knew that I would be able to afford my rent as well as start a savings account at the bank. Plus I’d have enough left over for fun and even school if not this coming spring semester, than definitely for the fall after. I hadn’t heard from my father at all, which worried me slightly because I figured he would have sent out the National Guard in search of me but I shrugged it off as him not really caring. Chris became my best friend and his family loved me, just as he predicted. I grew quite close to his mother and twin sister. Life was going well for Sydney Bristow in Las Vegas.

Michael Vaughn was bored out of his mind. At 19 years old, he was too old to play with his young cousins and too young to gamble, yet he had been dragged to Las Vegas for a family reunion. Sighing at his boredom, he dragged himself out to one of the pools at the MGM Grand and settled himself in the only open chair next to a girl around his age that was lounging in the sun in a cute black bikini.
After staring at the beautiful girl for a few minutes, he shifted his eyes to gaze around the rest of the pool.
“I thought you’d never stop staring at me,” a voice from his right said.
