In the Blink of an Eye

Here's a new fic I wrote in my spare time. It's light and fluffy fun for summer. It's actually downright cheesy and I am not afraid to admit it. But I had fun writing it and thanks to Tracey for her feedback. Enjoy. It's completely done, so I'm going to update once a day - so just check back! The only way I won't is if I lose internet power b/c of this intense heat, so no PM's, but I'll try to remember to put the links to each new posting in the first post like some other people do.

This is an S/V romancey fic. A/U of course.
Disclaimer: I own nothing. I just play with the characters.
Rating: Pg-Pg-13. nothing serious.

I hope you like it...and yes, I know it is full on cheese. But it's summer. I'm entitled. And I am posting whether people read or not. :smiley:

In The Blink of an Eye:
Things could change so fast. All you need is a little faith.

Chapter 1:

“I hate him. I hate him so much. I‘m so outta here. High school is finished and I’m legally an adult now. I don’t need his felgercarb or his money.” Sydney Bristow was bustling around her childhood room, throwing various belongings into several duffle bags. That morning had been her high school graduation and her father didn’t show up, again.

He had left some flimsy excuse on her cell phone about being called out of town for an important business meeting, but he left her graduation gift in the driveway. A brand new, 2007 (not even released to the general public) silver Lexus.

She was pissed. He had never been around for her, not since her mother died 12 years ago. She had been valedictorian of the school and just wanted her father there to see her speech, yet he disappointed her once again.

Once the caps had been thrown in the air, Sydney decided she was leaving for good and starting her own life, away from him. Knowing her father, it would take a week for him to notice and part of her even doubted that he’d care.

>o<

The following morning, I used my new car to run one single errand, a trip to the bank to close out my savings account. The cashier handed me $3,000 of my account in cash and the rest in a cashiers check for me to deposit in my new bank.

After dropping the car off at home, I called a cab and made my way to the bus station. After staring at the schedule for a few minutes, I made my decision and walked up to the ticket window.

“I’d like a one way ticket to Las Vegas, please.” I handed over the money and made my way to the bus. After putting my bags in the luggage compartment under the bus, I settled myself into a seat and knew that in just four short hours I’d be starting a completely new life.

~~~
Two hours into the ride, the guy who had been dozing next to me woke up. He looked about my age and he stared at me a few minutes before speaking.
“You don’t look like you are from Vegas.”
I turned and smiled. “You’re right. I’m moving there. I grew up in LA.”
“Sweet, you going to school there?”
“Not yet, just starting a new life.”
“Sounds good. I’m Chris, by the way. I’m from Vegas but I was visiting my friend in LA. He goes to school there and he stayed for summer classes. I’m starting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in the fall. I just finished high school.”
“Me too! Well, I mean, I just graduated. Oh, and my name is Sydney.”
“Hi, Sydney. Do you have a place to live?”
I looked down. “No. I hadn’t gotten that far. Any recommendations?”
Chris thought for a moment. “There are some pretty reasonably priced apartments right off the strip on East Tropicana Avenue. I have some buddies that live there. It’s about two blocks from the strip, which is where I assume you’ll probably get a job, and the rent is decent. Plus, it’s on the bus line and it has a pool. The complex is called Tropicana Springs.”
“Thanks, that’s really helpful information.”
“No sweat. What kind of job were you going to get?”
“Probably just waitressing or something. I don’t want to be a showgirl and I’m not old enough to work in the bars or casinos yet.”
“So what made you head to Vegas?”
“I thought it would be a fun atmosphere and somewhere I can be myself and just melt into the crowd.”
He nodded. “It’s fun, for sure, if you don’t mind all the tourists. I bet I can help you out even more…”
I was surprised. “Oh yeah? How?”
“My cousin is one of the manager’s for Emeril’s in the MGM. That’s one of the best restaurants on the strip. I can talk to him about interviewing you for a waitressing position.”
“You’d do that? For me? But you just met me!”
Chris smiled shyly. “Well, you seem like a really nice and intelligent girl. It’s hard to make friends in Vegas, so I want to help you out.”
“Thank you so much. You have no idea what this means to me.”
“It’s no problem. Hang on, I’m going to call my cousin right now.” Chris pulled out a cell phone, dialed a number and briefly spoke to whoever answered. A few minutes later he hung up, turned to Sydney, and smiled. “You have an interview tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. My cousin’s name is Dave. He said they just put up postings for four new waitresses.”
I squealed and quickly hugged Chris. “You are awesome. I honestly can’t thank you enough.”
For the rest of the ride, we chatted and got along fabulously. Chris noticed they were about ten minutes away from the bus depot and looked at me. “So, do you have a cell phone or something? I hope we can stay friends.”
“I’d love to, but I’m getting a new phone when I get to town. How about you give me your number and I promise to call you when I am settled. Or, if all goes well tomorrow, you may be able to find me at the MGM.”
Chris smiled and gave me his information. A few minutes later we parted ways and I hailed a cab to take me to the apartment complex Chris mentioned. It was 3:30 in the afternoon and I prayed the leasing office was still open.
I was in luck; not only was the office open, they had several vacant apartments that were furnished. I signed a lease immediately and moments later I was standing in my very own apartment for the first time. I felt like life was better already and all I needed was for my interview to go well tomorrow. Looking around the apartment, I decided to head out to a mall and get some basic essentials like sheets and towels.
In addition to the necessities, I picked up a new cell phone and immediately programmed Chris’ information into it. Things were working out so far and I went to sleep with a smile on my face for the first time in a long time.
>o<
Morning came and I woke up with the same smile. I showered, picked out a nice outfit and made my way to Las Vegas Boulevard, the main strip. I quickly located the MGM hotel and made my way into Emeril’s inquiring after Dave. He came out to greet me and we sat down at one of the empty tables to talk.
“So my cousin tells me you’re quite intelligent and hard working. Have you ever waitressed before?”
“Yes, Sir. I worked for three years as a caterer for an event firm. They would send us to formal parties like sweet sixteen’s or weddings where we would serve food, bus tables and circulate drinks.”
“Tell me more about that.” After speaking for fifteen more minutes, Dave hired me on the spot and told me to report back for the training shift that started the next day at ten in the morning. He said to go buy several pairs of black pants and incredibly comfortable black shoes. He even recommended several stores that his waitresses favored for shoes.
“Thanks again, Dave. I’m very excited about this opportunity.”
“Certainly. I trust my cousin. I look forward to seeing you tomorrow, Sydney. Have a great day, and welcome to Las Vegas.”
I smiled and practically floated out of the restaurant, disbelieving my good fortune. As soon as I was out of earshot from the restaurant, I pulled out my cell and called the only number programmed.
“Hello?”
“Chris, it’s Sydney Bristow…from the bus.”
“Hey! How is it going?”
“Great. I owe you so much. Not only did I get an apartment where you suggested but I got the job at Emeril’s. If I hadn’t met you on the bus, I’d probably be wandering Vegas lost right now.”
Chris chuckled and assured me that I would have found my way without him.
After chatting a few more minutes, I invited him to dinner to repay him for his kindness. He accepted and we agreed to meet up at Margaritaville in the Flamingo hotel at six.
~~~

Six came and I was standing outside the restaurant, watching the tourists walk by. Suddenly, a pair of hands covered my eyes.
“Guess who?”
“Hmm…if this isn’t Chris, then I am in some major trouble.”

He chuckled and swung me around into a hug. “I’m really happy you got the job, Sydney! You are going to make some kick ass tips. All the celebrities eat there.”
I giggled and we headed inside and proceeded to have a great time at dinner.
Towards the end of the meal, Chris looked into my eyes and saw a hint of sadness in them. “Hey…not to be nosey or anything, but how did you end up here? I mean, you look like the kind of girl who would be getting ready for college now.”

My face slightly mirrored the sadness in my eyes. “Hey…you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to,” he continued. “I was just being my nosey self.”

I gave him a small smile. “No…I may as well tell you. Yes…I would be getting ready for college this summer. But I sort of upped and left once I graduated. It was just my dad and I. My mom died when I was six, and he hasn’t been around since. He really was never there for me and the last straw was not showing up to my high school graduation, which I was Valedictorian for, and thinking he can buy my forgiveness with a brand new car. So I left it all. I left him, the car, my cell phone…everything. I came to be on my own. Maybe I’ll make enough money to start school here next semester or something.” I continued my story while Chris sat in awe.

“Wow. You are so brave. Well, I’m glad I met you because you are welcome to hang out with me and my friends and everything. And you should come meet my family. That way if you ever need any sort of parental advice, you can go to my parents. They’d love you.”
“That’s really nice, but I’ll be okay. I raised myself as it is!”

“Hey. You don’t have to be so brave all the time. Not anymore.” I thanked Chris with a hug and we left the restaurant. He walked me around the strip a bit and showed me the volcano that went off at the Mirage every half hour and the dancing water fountains at the Bellagio. Soon I said I needed to go to sleep because I started work the next day and he bid me good night.

The next two months flew by as I settled into my new life in Las Vegas. My apartment started to come together and I actually loved my job. The clientele of the restaurant were normally incredibly wealthy people and the tips I made each night added up. Plus, I tried to be so friendly and upbeat that even the crankiest of patrons adored me and I scored huge tips constantly. I knew that I would be able to afford my rent as well as start a savings account at the bank. Plus I’d have enough left over for fun and even school if not this coming spring semester, than definitely for the fall after. I hadn’t heard from my father at all, which worried me slightly because I figured he would have sent out the National Guard in search of me but I shrugged it off as him not really caring. Chris became my best friend and his family loved me, just as he predicted. I grew quite close to his mother and twin sister. Life was going well for Sydney Bristow in Las Vegas.

>o<

Michael Vaughn was bored out of his mind. At 19 years old, he was too old to play with his young cousins and too young to gamble, yet he had been dragged to Las Vegas for a family reunion. Sighing at his boredom, he dragged himself out to one of the pools at the MGM Grand and settled himself in the only open chair next to a girl around his age that was lounging in the sun in a cute black bikini.

After staring at the beautiful girl for a few minutes, he shifted his eyes to gaze around the rest of the pool.
“I thought you’d never stop staring at me,” a voice from his right said.

Recap:

After staring at the beautiful girl for a few minutes, he shifted his eyes to gaze around the rest of the pool.
“I thought you’d never stop staring at me,” a voice from his right said.

Chapter 2

Michael blushed in embarrassment. “I’m sorry, you’re just really pretty.”
The girl sat up and smiled, showing off a set of dimples that made her even more beautiful. “Little ol’ me? I’m flattered.” She laughed.
Michael blushed even more and looked down at his hands, at a loss for words. “I’m Sydney,” she continued.
“Michael. Nice to meet you.”
“Likewise. So what are you doing here? Vacationing with friends?”

“I wish,” he groaned. “I was dragged here for a family reunion. And I am too young to play in the casino, too old to baby-sit my little cousins and in no mood to shop with my girl cousins. So there was nothing else for me to do but drag myself to the pool.”
“To stare at the pretty girls, right?” Sydney joked.
“Very funny. So why are you here?”

She shrugged. “I have some free time. So, how old are you anyway?”
“19. Two years too shy for anything fun around here.”
“Nah, there is plenty to do. You just have to know where to look.”
“Oh really?”
“Yep!” She smirked and lay back down.
“Well, do you want to show me then, later tonight?”

Sydney sat up again and studied the boy sitting next to her. He was adorable, she concluded, with a muscular body and intoxicating green eyes, and she knew there would be nothing she’d love more than to hang out with him tonight. However, one thing stood in her way. “I’m sorry Michael, but I have to work tonight.” She saw his face fall.

“That’s okay.” He lay back against the chair. She felt bad and continued to chat with him for another half hour before she excused herself to get ready for work.
“It was nice meeting you, Michael. Maybe I’ll see you around before you leave town.”
He smiled at her and said goodbye, thinking he’d love nothing more than to get to know the beautiful girl he happened to sit next to at the pool.

>o<

After a shower a few hours later, Michael joined his family for dinner at Emeril’s, where they had a reservation for 12 people. They were seated quickly and moments later he heard a bright voice greet them.
“My, my! What a large gathering we have here. Welcome to Emeril’s, my name is Sydney and I will be your waitress tonight. Have any of you been here before?” Michael looked up and saw his beautiful girl from the pool, standing next to his father with a huge smile on her face. She hadn’t noticed him yet, and a slow smile spread across his face.

“Can I get you all any drinks to start?” she finished up her speech and began taking drink orders around the table. When she got to Michael, he decided to be a little cocky, as she hadn’t looked up from her pad yet.
“I’d like the pretty girl in the black bikini, please,” he said boldly. She looked up in surprise as his mother said his name sternly and smacked his hand.
Sydney smiled though, and shook her head. “I’m sorry but we don’t have those anymore, how about a Coke?”

“Coke’s great.” She nodded and wrote it on her pad, saying she’d be back momentarily with the drink orders.
As soon as she walked away, Michael noticed his family staring at him in disbelief. “Michael, what is wrong with you? That was terribly disrespectful.”

“It’s okay, Mom. I met her at the pool earlier. She knows I was kidding.”
“You’d better hope so, I don’t want to get thrown out of here for sexual harassment.”

Michael groaned and sat silently until the drinks arrived. As Sydney handed out the beverages, she flashed him a huge smile and subtly dropped a paper in his lap as she set his drink on the table.

I’m off tomorrow, I’ll be happy to play tour guide. Give me a call if you are interested,” the paper said, along with her cell number. Michael grinned and slid the paper in his pocket, flirting with her with his eyes for the rest of the meal. Suddenly he was thrilled he had been dragged to Las Vegas, and was looking forward to tomorrow.

>o<

“I can’t believe I did that!” I squealed into the phone to my best friend at three in the morning when I finally got home. “I mean I gave some random guy my number who is just on vacation here.”
“That’s awesome, Syd. Now you are finally acting like a local!” Chris teased back, urging me to “go for it,” and just have some fun.
“All right, I’ll call you after I hang out with him, right now I’m so tired. Tonight was incredibly busy, but I made awesome tips.”
“Great, when are you taking me out for dinner then?”
“Funny, funny boy. Good night, my dear.”
“Night Syd. Have fun tomorrow…and be safe.”
“I will.” I clicked my phone shut and smiled to myself, thinking about Michael Vaughn and the very un-Sydney like chance I took tonight in hanging out with him. Something about those green eyes and the adorable way he blushed when I busted him for staring at me made me want to get to know the bored 19 year old who was dragged to Vegas by his family.

~~~
Ring. Riiinngg… “Uh, shut up…” I groaned at my phone when it went off around 9:30 in the morning. Sighing, I reached over and answered it, in case it was work needing me on short notice.
“This is Sydney,” I said with an incredibly sleepy voice.
“Oh…this is Michael. I’m really sorry about waking you up…” In an instant, I bolted upright, cleared my throat and smiled.
“Oh! Hey. It’s all right. I just didn’t get home until three. But I am really glad you called.”
“Yeah? I wanted to see if your offer still stands.”
“Definitely. How much time you got?”
“All day, if I want.”
I smiled. Today was going to be fun. “Great. I just need to grab a quick shower. Meet me at the southwest corner of Tropicana and the strip in 45 minutes.”
“Looking forward to it. See you then, Sydney.”
“Later, Michael,” I said giggling and quickly jumped out of bed to make myself look pretty.
>o<
I spotted him casually standing on the corner looking around the crowd, trying to find me. Smirking, and making the decision not to be my usual self, I snuck up behind him and jumped on his back. “Got ya!” I felt him flinch just slightly before I felt his arms wrap around my legs. I took that as a good sign and draped my arms around his neck, leaning forward and whispering into his ear, “Did I scare you?”
He chuckled and released me. “Just a bit,” he admitted and turned around to face me.
“Sorry, I don’t know what came over me,” I admitted. “So you think Vegas is boring, huh?”
“Maybe you can prove otherwise?”
“I’ll try.” I grinned. “Okay…do you like roller coasters?”
“Sure.”
“Great!” I grabbed his hand and dragged him across the street to New York, New York. “See this hotel? There is a roller coaster right on it. This is just the start of some fun things to do…”
By 12:30, I had taken Michael to the Stratosphere to go on the three rides they had there, the Insanity, the Big Shot and the X Scream. We also saw the Ferrari car exhibit at the Wynn and the white tigers at the Mirage before ending up at Treasure Island for lunch.
“So, do you still think Vegas is boring?” I asked with my mouth full of a quesadilla from Kahunaville.
Michael laughed. “No, I’m having a great time. You are a wonderful tour guide. Have you lived here your whole life?”
I grinned devilishly. “No, about three months.” He looked shocked.
“You’re kidding, right?”
“Nope. Swear to god, came out when I finished high school. I just had some excellent tour guides when I got here. I’m really from LA.”
He nodded, not ready to ask her why she came here from school instead of going to college. He knew it wasn’t his place to butt into her life that way yet and it was obvious she had a life going for herself here with a good job.
I noticed his silence. “Hey…anything wrong?”
He quickly recovered and smiled back at me. “Not at all. Like I said, I’m having a great time. How can I not? I’m with a fantastically beautiful girl.” I blushed. “So, can we go on one of those gondola things over at the Venetian later?”
“Really? Sure. I haven’t done that yet either.” I smiled to myself, thinking about how romantic a gondola ride would be with Michael. I was also having a great time. He was so easy to talk to and it felt like I’d know him forever instead of one day. “So, um, is your girlfriend going to mind you taking romantic boat rides with some strange girl?”
Michael gave me a weird look. “Sydney,” he began softly. “I don’t have a girlfriend.”
My heart fluttered as I stared into his piercing green eyes. “That’s good news,” feeling the obvious sparks of chemistry flying between us. He smiled and put his hand on mine.
“Should we go?” he asked, breaking the silence.
“Yes.” I signaled the waiter and we paid for lunch, heading out to the Venetian. Soon we were sitting very closely in the boat while being paddled around and Michael dared to put his arm around my shoulders. I smiled and put my head on his shoulder.
“Would you like a picture? It’s only three dollars and for five dollars you can get two,” the gondolier asked them.
W looked at each other and smiled. “Sure!” We cuddled up close together and the gondolier shot the picture and handed us a number.
“You can pick up your pictures in one hour at the concierge desk.”
“Thank you,” I said, taking hold of Michael’s hand for the remainder of the ride. After departing the boat, we hung around the lobby of the hotel, talking about our lives until the pictures were ready.
“Oh my god, Michael, look at the picture. We’re so cute!!” I squealed, handing Michael his copy. He agreed and put the picture back in the bag it came in for safekeeping. Hand in hand, we left the hotel and wandered lazily down the strip back towards the MGM. I caught Michael yawning at one point.
“Oh no, I’ve worn you out.”
He grinned. “Nah, I just need to relax for a little bit. Maybe we could sit down somewhere back at the hotel and talk some more?”
“Sure.”
We made their way back to the hotel, but Michael kept yawning. “Okay, you’re tired…I’ll walk you back to your room,” I said sadly.
Michael grimaced, not wanting her to think she was boring him or he didn’t want to spend more time with her. “Hey…come with me. I have my own room anyway and I don’t want you to go yet.”
I thought for two minutes before answering. “You sure?” He nodded. “Okay,” I said, linking my arm through his and following him to his room. As soon as he got inside, he flopped onto the bed and groaned about his feet hurting. I laughed and gingerly sat on the edge of the bed, watching him slowly close his eyes.
“What are you doing all the way over there?” He asked, opening one eye up. “Come here, lie down with me,” he said, patting the space next to him. I slowly lay back and he put an arm around me. Smiling, I dared to cuddle up closer and noticed that he was asleep within minutes. Sighing, I shut my own eyes and also drifted into a light sleep.
~~~

Hours later an incessant ringing caused me to open my eyes. It took a minute to realize where I was and that it wasn’t my phone that was ringing. I was still cuddled in Michael’s embrace and I realized how natural it felt to be this close to him. I smiled and gently poked him in the side.

“Michael…your phone.”
“Mmm, no, I don’t want any potatoes, thanks.”

I laughed and poked him harder. “Get up! Your phone!” He bolted up and looked around for a minute before locating his cell phone.

“Hello?” He listened for a few minutes before speaking. “Sorry, Mom. I fell asleep. Can I skip dinner? I found some people my age around here and I would like to hang out with them tonight, if I can…I promise I’ll do family stuff tomorrow.” More silence. “Thanks, Mom. I love you.” He shut his phone with a click and smiled at me.

“Expecting me to entertain you tonight as well?”
He blushed. “Well, I was hoping that we could…”
“I’d love to.” I cut him off. “Today has been great…and I have to admit it was nice waking up in your arms,” I admitted, blushing fiercely. It was so unlike me to be this bold. Something about this boy made me feel connected to him, and I was pretty sure he felt the same way.

“I totally agree,” he said, grinning. “So…tonight?”
“Hmm…well, we can grab dinner right here at the hotel. I have connections…perk of the job. I get to eat for free! I’ll just call them and have them make a bag for me to take back up here. Then, I have to take you to see the dancing fountains at the Bellagio.”

“Sounds great.” I smiled at him and pulled out my phone to make the phone call.
“Thanks, Dave. I’ll pick it up in a half hour.” I smiled and clicked the phone shut. “We have some good food coming our way. So, tell me some more about yourself, Michael Vaughn.”

Michael proceeded to tell me more about himself and his hobbies, where he grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, and his obsession with hockey. However, when he asked me about my past, I clammed up a bit and I am sure he noticed.

“Oh, look at the time. I should go grab our food. Be right back,” I said, breezing out of the room, leaving Michael confused. He sat for a few more moments and decided not to push her until she was ready to talk.
“Okay! Food’s here,” I said, coming back into the room. “You’re gonna love it,” I declared, handing him some plates and silverware.

After we ate and brought the dishes back to the restaurant, I grabbed Michael’s hand and we wandered back up the strip towards the Bellagio. The sky had grown dim and the lights came on in the fountains at the hotel.
“Oh, one of the songs just ended. We have to wait 15 minutes,” I said, walking up to the wall overlooking the fountain.

“I don’t mind,” Michael replied, wrapping his arms around me. I smiled and cuddled up to him and we simply stood there watching the people go by.

“So about earlier,” I began, breaking the silence after a few minutes, “I’m sorry I brushed off your question about my past. I guess I’m slightly embarrassed about myself because you come from such a wealthy, put together family and you are in college working towards a degree while right now I wait tables for a living.”

Michael gave me a concerned look. “Syd…please don’t be ashamed to tell me anything. I know we have only known each other like, one day, but I feel like I’ve known you forever and I want you to know you can tell me anything.”
My heart started to melt. “Thanks. That means a lot…and I promise I’ll tell you. But right now the fountains are about to dance again so let’s watch,” I finished with a giggle and turned around to face the water. Michael stood behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and lost himself in thought.

The fountains danced for about ten minutes and the song playing was “Fly Me to the Moon.” As the spectacle drew to a close, Michael gently turned me in his arms and planted the lightest of kisses on my lips. In return, I smiled and brought my arms up around his neck, pulling him in for a deeper kiss.
“Is this crazy?” He mumbled against my lips, his conscious weighing on him for only knowing me slightly over 24 hours.

“Is it crazy of me to say that I don’t think it is?”

“No, because I feel the same way.” We pulled apart, smiling at each other and walked hand in hand back to Michael’s hotel. While we walked, I told him about why I left my hometown to come here and start over. His reaction was similar to Chris’ in the fact that he was impressed with my bravery and told me he wished I’d be able to go back to school one day like I wanted. Once we reached the door of his hotel room, I started to say goodnight.

“I had a really great time today, Michael. I’m glad you decided to stare at me at the pool yesterday. I should get go…”

Michael cut me off with a finger to my lips. “Why don’t you stay?” I gave him a suspicious glance. “JUST to sleep…I promise.” He grinned. “I’m not ready to say goodbye to you yet. You’re so…special.”
