David Cameron has announced plans to crack down on online pornography by changing the way it is accessed. Under his plans, every internet user will be forced to opt in if they want to access sexually graphic content, and possessing violent pornography will be be made a crime. But what threat does pornography pose to our society - is it really dangerous? Anti-porn author Julia Long believes that pornography is a form of violence against women and says our children need to be protected from harmful images. But journalist Martin Daubney believes that porn can be a healthy outlet for sexual fantasies and says we will never be able to be eradicate it from society.

We want to know what you think?

Okay, for starters do I think that porn in itself is dangerous? No I do not. Porn in itself can never be dangerous. The danger however lies within how certain people perceive it and later on act upon it. In my opinion it bottles down to the fact that some people can't separate what is real and what is not real.

Now, I could go all saint-like, and try to fool everybody without actually doing so, and just deny ever watching porn.. Yeah... as if. However, porn have never really been about fantasies for me.. It's been a way for a quick release of tension between girlfriends and if you need to release tension overall. Although porn is strictly necessary I think I speak for a lot of others when I say it makes it easier.. Have I been damaged by watching porn? Not in the slightest. However I can see the danger if and when it goes overboard in more than one way..

People have different kinks that make them tick, but there are some things that simply shouldn't be allowed. If a person was to watch a lot of the really heavy dominance porn for way too long, then yes... if they have those tendencies already and have a problem with separating reality and non-reality then yes, they might become a danger to society. However, with that being said, the same would apply to movies, games, songs etc..

--------------

And in regards to whether or not it's a form of violence against women I call sexism. Is it any more so against women than their male counterpart? I mean come on.. Normal... hetero porn. A couple having sex, is that regarded as violence against women? Without having ventured too far into it, not having read the full thing, I daresay this author is crying wolf. My assumption would be that she found some gruesome form of porn (which shouldn't even be allowed to be rated as porn but enough about that), saw the female "lead" (yes, I use that term very loosely, you know what I mean.) being abused by the very dominant male lead and then wrote it off as "this is porn."

In regards to Martin Daubney's own theory or opinion I'd agree to a certain extent. I believe porn could be used as an outlet for all sexual fantasies but at the same time that does not always have to be the case.

-------------

Changing the way the population can access porn is in my opinion wrong. Effectively it would be a new way of tracking people and their activities. What's to say the next step won't be to track all form of internet activity the very same way. And once we're at that point then we're not far from absolute censorship. Opening the floodgates where they're basically saying "you're not allowed to do this and this" we're not far from having activists ban more things. Anything deemed possibly harmful would be shut down. And it would be based on their opinion.

Opening up for religious activists among others to effectively shut down anything deemed inappropriate.

On the fence myself. I don't think kids should access it but then again, if they do, then their parents control appears to be more dangerous than the porn sites.

This article in the Huff Post kinda puts paid to the whole "it's abusive to women" argument, since it's a porn actress (Nina Hartley) who's been interviewed.

Pornography is a paid, professional performance by actors. It is a fantasy, it is not meant to be a rulebook and guidebook or a how to as a general rule. And it goes to show how poor our sex education is in this country that people are reduced to looking at an entertainment medium for information about the body.

I think the first sentence of her quote says it all - porn is really no different from any other sex scene in a movie, just more explicit.

Just to inform the masses.....

Yes, I am still researching this question. I am being very thorough, and will not miss out on any opportunity that presents itself.

Rest easy.

Good guy Sheldon to the rescue!

Keep us updated on your progress

Porn in itself is not dangerous.

The danger that certain people will try to emulate something that they've seen and later on act upon it with some unwilling participant is like saying certain people will lack self control, so society has to avoid triggering negative reactions by the minority.

Avoiding triggering negative reactions by the minority? Excuse European Muslims for attacking Western cartoonists for defaming Islam as allowing them religious freedom, then conclude a non-Muslim cannot criticize Islam as a religious freedom for them is hypocritical.

In my opinion it boils down to the fact that the majority can't be limited by unusual reactions of a tiny minority.

Conformist and personally conservative Japan has extreme forms of fantasy porn where innocent young women are forced into sex by aggressive men or even demons or creatures. That seems to suggest that in their society, good girls won't have sex unless they are forced to.

Yet, Japan doesn't have more real life rape that the West, despite having rape porn. Their society knows that they can't emulate bad behaviour from films.

Although I know that statistically you're right in that regard, I must say that I find rape porn utterly repulsive... The only time I condone the death sentence is if it was a rapist, child molester or someone that was abusive to women. I couldn't care less about murderers, they can serve time... but rapists, child molesters and people that abuse their women? Oh there's nothing I wouldn't do...

I think Porn is highly Dangerous, due to its appalling health and safety.....I mean in some instances not a single drop of lube is used, and this could lead to serious chafing.

Not to mention the fact that all over the world there are thousands of masturbation related injuries, caused solely by watching porn (and usually getting caught in the act) and this cannot continue.

Then there is the Animal abuse, that poor hound forced to have sex with that lady will never be the same again...look..

So to Sum up, David Cameron is a Dick.

Appalling taboos such as bondage, discipline, fantasy/demonic rape seems to have a place in Japanese porn. There must be a cultural reason why we conservative Westerners are appalled by porn, but it is desired by conservative people like the Japanese.

I've come to the conclusion that porn serves as a Safety Release to society when a society understands that it is a Safety Release to express behaviour that no one would really want to act out - I'm using the Japanese example. I think that liberal society like the Dutch and Danes have understood porn to be a Safety Release, as well. Strange to think that when Eastern Europe was ruled by Communism, they had a Sex Trade. Now they are Democracies, they still have a flourishing sex trade.

If we want to stir up a firestorm, why is it that Muslims proclaim that they live in a conservative manner to be pleasing to Allah, yet they enjoy porn in secret. I've seen a fake Celebrity-skin website where presumably Muslim men talk about wanting to defile Western Actresses that they had fake porn of. In Turkey where East Meets West, Muslim men seek out 'Christian' prostitutes because they don't want to defile an Islamic woman. Surely Allah doesn't approve, plus knows who these hypocrites are.

Wow, we are scholars! :monocle:

IMO porn won't corrupt children. How could it with all the bullshit on TV these days? Even the Disney channel is starting to glamorize sex on the telly. I'm not going to lose sleep over it. Kids' morals will become corrupt if they start doing drugs or are brought up in a bad house.

Porn has been around almost as long as sex. Just the medium in which it is disseminated has changed. From Karma Sutra to the Joy of Sex. From black and white still pictures to Deep Throat. From Playboy to streaming video. It's much easier to access now than when I was a kid. Sneaking out Playboys from my dad's secret hiding place and getting them back before he noticed was always a challenge.

To me it's a good thing. As superintellgent one said it's a 'safety release'. It's much better to self-gratify in private instead of trying to satiate that desire on someone else who may not want the attention. And that's leads to a much worse problem :(

I think it's worse than temporarily dangerous. It has everlasting effects.

I know dudes who think women actually expect to get a facial after sex.

I know people who think that most sex needs anal interjected somewhere in there.

I think that's less to do with porn and more to do with being stupid.
