For awhile, critics of Kevin Smith doubted he would ever step out of his “View Askewniverse” and make movies that you could actually watch with your parents without dying of shame (did that happen to anyone else when they rented “Chasing Amy,” or was that just me?). But fans of Smith always knew he had more to offer — and the buzz on “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” is proving it to everyone else.

Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Smith is set to make his most ambitious and expensive movie yet — an untitled sci-fi comedy that he’s aiming to get a $40-$50 million budget for. “The moment someone steps out of the spaceship, it’s going to cost a little more,” said Smith.

The story will center around a father-son relationship, and will reference other science fiction movies. (I think we can all expect at least one or two of those “other science fiction movies” will be the trilogy centered on ultimate father-son dynamic. Do I even need to name it?) It’s a new dynamic for Smith to explore, and he’s pretty excited to do it. “All the relationships in the flicks I’ve done have been done before, have been either a guy falling for a girl or two dudes hanging out in a ‘bromantic’ comedy. I wanted to explore a father and son.”

Smith has finished the first draft of the script, but the movie won’t go forward until he finishes filming “Red State,” his drama focused on a domestic terrorist living in America’s Heartland. From porno, to terrorists, to sci-fi — who knows what he’ll tackle next?

Sound off, readers! Can you believe Smith hasn’t tackled sci-fi before? Are you excited to see him moving away from Jay and Silent Bob, and into big budgets, or are do you miss the good old days of the View Askewniverse?

If it is a movie that is going to "reference" other movies, than how is this movie considered a sci-fi film itself as opposed to a parody or just a comedy?
