The original Lost in Space with Robbie? I guess I would consider myself a fan as I remember watching it in repeats.

Looking back on the show there are likely some elements of it that would not be considered "Politically Correct" these days but it was a good show for its time.

The 're-imagined' movie from a few years ago, with Matt LeBlanc and Lacey Chabert, I did not care for. It seemed to start off on a strong foot but then just lost with the 'Dr. Smith is a spider' angle.

I saw the movie, it sucked! The reason I ask is I, after being a fan since I was 8, found out Mark Goddard (Mj. Don West) lives down the street, he autographed all my old VHS's. He is so damn cool...

That is pretty cool. Do you know if kept any of the props from the show? I'm sure he has some interesting stories to tell.

I'm not sure, I don't see him much anymore. As you can imagine, he isn't particuarly young. But he is still a special ed teacher, which is pretty awesome. I'll ask him next time I see him.

You may have not know his face or voice, but if you spent your childhood watching Lost In Space on TV, then you have seen his work. Bob May, the actor inside of the 'the robot' on the series, has died at the age of 69.

Lost In Space - I saw an episode of the 1960s Sci-Fi TV Classic on Detroit's Channel 38.1. It was broacast in B&W, so it had to have been from their first season (1965). [IMG] [IMG]

It was funny seeing the pre-women's lib dialogue. Professor John Robinson, Major Don West and young Will Robinson are away on a mission. Wife Maureen Robinson is left behind on the "Jupiter 2" with grown daughter Judy, pre-teen daughter Penny, and cowardly, egocentric Dr. Smith. The women fret that their men are away and not able to protect them from the undetermined menace of a creature that they hear howling. That setup allowed Dr. Smith to say his trademark line "Never fear, Smith is here!"

The menace was an alien who wore a gorilla-suit and a devil-like face. Scary! [IMG]

I remember the show was more popular than Star Trek. How far in the future is the series set? 1997! [IMG]

I recall the series is Irwin Allen's space-age adaptation of the novel The Swiss Family Robinson. The astronaut family Robinson, accompanied by military pilot Major Don West and an "enviromental robot", set out to explore & establish a colony in Alpha Centauri for an overpopulated Earth.

Prior to Jupiter 2's launch (October 16, 1997), the ship is sabotaged by enemy spy, mission physician Dr. Zachary Smith. He slips aboard the spaceship during countdown to sabotage the astro-navigation while everyone are in cryo-statis. He also reprograms the robot to kill the crew.

Dr. Smith is unable to leave before the ship launches, so he is forced to save himself by reviving the crew from suspended animation in order to avoid a meteor shower that he had steered the ship into. Smith pretends to be innocent and onboard by accident.

The robot emerges from its bay saying "Crush, Kill, Destroy". Although it has deadly electricity arcing from it's claws, the simple minded robot is rendered inoperative when its power pack is removed. The Professor and the Major save the ship, but consequent damage leaves them lost in space far from Earth. They eventually crash-land on an alien world, later identified as Priplanis. Low on fuel, the Robinsons must mine ore for the necessary fuel they need to lift off, while surviving various adventures.

Originally portrayed as a sinister & self-serving villain, Dr. Smith (whom Allen originally intended to kill off) became the series' source of conflict & comedic cowardice, exploiting the forgiving nature of the Robinsons. Most of us would have jettisoned Dr. Smith from the airlock in their circumstances. [IMG]

Great series! In competition with Star Trek at the time, but both series were produced in a excellent fashion. I saw the movie in the 90's it was ok, a little boring at times, but again the SFX was great. Fan or not what say you?[IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] I wonder if they will get a new tv series out there before us Gen-xers pass on?

I liked Lost in space, but the only complaint I had was that the size of the ship didn't fit the inside sets they had to show for the series. Thus it was like the Tartarus from Dr. Who, bigger on the inside than the outside. Still it was a great show and back then I thought Penny was quite...she was my age. The new movie was nice too, the whole Time travel thing did make me think of Star Trek.

We grew up watching everything Irwin Allen ever did and loved the original series all the way around especially Bill Mumy, Angela Cartwright and Johnathan Harris.

The 1999 movie was ok, it had a great update for the theme music but Randy fell in love with Lacy Chabert (Penny) and we still watch everything we can find with her in it. Mostly she's on Hallmark Channel but she has been in several hit TV series and movies since then.

Yeup Lacy was a looker, I reckon she still is. It was a cute movie, but not too much like the series...

Yah, the ship had odd construction, I think the film had 3 levels, upper and lower deck, and the engine room, where Will battled the fog monster, the ship should have been larger outside to match the inside. Cool series non the less....

Somebody please remind me.... what was the premise of the original show as to why they were sending a family off into space by themselves?

    Lost in Space ( 1965 )
Lost in Space: In the year 1997, Earth is suffering from massive overpopulation. Professor John Robinson, his wife Maureen, their children (Judy, Penny and Will) and Major Don West are selected to go to the third planet in the Alpha Centauri star system to establish a colony so that other Earth people can settle there. They are to go there on a ship of Professor Robinson's design, christened the Jupiter 2. However, Doctor Zachary Smith, an agent for an enemy government, is sent to sabotage the mission. He is successful in reprogramming the ship's robot, but in the process becomes trapped on the ship, and because of his excess weight, the ship and all on board become hopelessly lost and it now becomes a fight for survival as the crew tries to find their way back home.

Tom that was AWESOME, but it proves my point that the inside of the Jupiter 2 was larger than the actual ship...LOL!!!

I think the third season theme is the best! It projects a lot more excitement and energy than the quirky sounds of the original theme.

If you look around on YouTube there's one with Bill & Johnathon that's so funny!

Bill is frequently on Angela's Facebook page and they are still pretty good together. He has responded briefly to a couple of Randy's comments in the past and that was nice.

Bill is about 2-3 years older than we are so we literally watched him on dozens of shows from Twilight Zone to the Munsters, etc. etc. etc. but I think we enjoyed him the most on Babylon 5.
