PROJECT DETAILS

  • A lengthy spoilerish premise can be read here: (highlight to read) When the police discover the bodies of a slaughtered family living on a farm just outside of Amsterdam, they are clueless as to what happened. Lizzy, an attractive veterinarian working in the Amsterdam Zoo, confirms their suspicions; there must be a lion on the loose! And judging by the wounds of the mutilated victims, the lion must be big, strong and vicious! Several more gruesome attacks follow and Lizzy is convinced there is a maneater roaming the streets of Amsterdam.

She has trouble, however, convincing the authorities of the danger. When they finally set up a press conference to warn the public of the danger, their statement is met with disbelief. No one has seen the lion, and there is not much evidence of its existence. The public’s disbelief disappears when the lion goes on a murder spree in a streetcar full of people. After a disastrous failed attempt by the nephew of the chief of police to hunt down and kill the lion, a friend of Lizzy’s, a famous English lion hunter, is flown in.

The police are stunned to see that the man has only one leg and is confined to a wheelchair. Slowly their worries disappear when the man seems to know what he is talking about and the power wheelchair, equipped with snowmobile tracks, makes him almost as fast as a speeding lion. Still, the authorities are not convinced of the lion hunter’s skills. They send in an Army squad, but their mission ends in more bloodshed – albeit not the lion’s.

Finally the lion hunter gets permission to hunt down the lion in his own way. He succeeds in tracking down the lion to a University building and with Lizzy’s help he manages to kill the beast, losing his life in the process. When Lizzy accompanies her deceased friend in an ambulance to the hospital, the lion has one more surprise up his sleeve....
  • Writer/director Dick Maas also helmed the 2010 holiday slasher Saint.

PROJECT DETAILS
  • Producer Peter Block (Saw franchise executive producer) purchased the rights to Pumpkinhead and is in search of a director with hopes to start shooting sometime in 2017 with a theatrical release sometime after. He had this to say about the current status of the project: "We’re just about to start going out looking for a director for it. [We need] somebody who really understands why the first one is terrific, the emotional beats of ‘Is the revenge you seek worse than whatever befell you in the first place?’ But it’s also somebody that wants to embrace what I think audiences really want these days — a really scary, fun thrill-ride. You get a lot of people who want to be in this genre because they see the commercial opportunities. I’m looking for a director who has a love for the genre and knows how to get those beats for the audience." (8/3/16)
  • On the topic of the original film, producer Peter Block was quoted saying: "Pumpkinhead is one of my favorite horror films of the late ’80s, early ’90s. Stan Winston sits on that Mount Rushmore of iconic filmmakers because of his creature designs, and that was his first directing effort. The creature’s great but the emotional story is wonderful as well. I got the rights to Pumpkinhead, and hooked up with a great young writer called Nate Atkins, and we developed our script, which is really solid." On what to expect from the remake he was quoted saying: “There is a similarity of theme and a similarity of story. There’s a lot of Easter eggs for people who know the original — iconic shots and iconic lines that we’re going to use. But we’ve enhanced the setting, and we’ve expanded the characters somewhat, to give it a different kind of experience.” And it looks like they'll stick with more practical effects, saying: "I am a big proponent of practical effects. That was the great thing about the original. A lot of the films I still respond to most today, it’s because of the practical effects. We think that it’s going to be a nice slow reveal, lots of scares and lots of action in the beginning, and a great creature in the end, which everybody should be able to look at and say, ‘Oh, that’s Pumpkinhead!’ It’s not like you’re all of a sudden going to find that it’s some amorphous, nebulous, CGI wispy thing. You’re going to know it came from the Pumpkinhead family lineage."
  • The original spawned a straight-to-DVD sequel and two SyFy channel movies.
  • This is a remake of the 1988 film with the same name from late makeup effects legend Stan Winston.

  • Writer Ian Driscoll (Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter, Smash Cut) was quoted saying the following about the original: "It’s full of challenging, creepy, original ideas. It’s smart, surprising and unpredictable. If we can do the same thing, this can be another classic for a new generation."
  • Director Rie Rasmussen was quoted saying: "I’m Scandinavian and am very comfortable with sexual expression as a part of a healthy, modern-day reality, and I’ve always loved the underlying social messages in a well-made horror film. The opportunity to reinterpret this film from today’s point of view, adding my own female intuition and life experience was a temptation I couldn’t resist."
  • It's said that this remake will be "updated for today’s social and sexual realities. In a post-HIV world, where people interact through screens rather than skin, the parasite breaks down those digital barriers. This is a world that is both more liberated than that of 1975, and more fearful and uptight."
  • This is a remake of the 1975 David Cronenberg film with the same name.

PROJECT DETAILS
  • It looks like the news about the film moving into pre-production already was simply a rumor, as director Simon West revealed in an interview he conducted a month ago that he's still not sure what he's doing next, saying: "I am not sure what I am doing next but I would eventually like to make The Blob. I am usually working on 3 or 4 things at once in the development stage but I never know which one will bubble to the top first." Even if he does move forward with this remake it seems like it might be more sci-fi than horror, as he revealed in an even older interview that sci-fi is his favorite genre: "I am always developing several projects at once. The Blob is one of the things I would like to make and part of my reinvention is to make it more sci-fi than horror. Actually, sci-fi is my favourite genre even though I’ve never made a sci-fi film." (10/25/17)
  • While nothing has been confirmed, it appears that the project may have moved to an early pre-production stage and there's a rumor that Halle Berry may have a starring role in the film. Sam Jackson still seems to be attached, but at the moment none of this ohs officially been confirmed, so everything must be treated as a rumor for the time being. (6/12/17)
  • Apparently this project has stalled a bit due to lack of funding, but according to Samuel L. Jackson things may be moving forward again sometime soon. Here's what he said in a recent interview: "I just got a call the other day (where the producers) said they finally got their money from China to do Blob." (3/31/17)
  • Filming was originally aimed to begin sometime in the Fall of 2015, but it never occured.
  • Samuel L. Jackson plays "a biochemistry professor attempting to thwart the other-worldly predator discovered deep within the earth."
  • Director Simon West was quoted saying: "With modern CGI we can now fully realize the potential of The Blob. The world I create will be totally believable, immersive and emotionally satisfying. It’s a thrill to introduce an enduring icon to a wider audience and a whole new era of fans."
  • One of the producers was quoted saying: "Simon West has a unique gift for blending cutting edge effects, awesome visual spectacle and a hint of humor. He’s the perfect choice to reimagine The Blob and we’re so excited to be partnering with him."
  • Simon West (Con Air, The Mechanic, The Expendables 2) is attached to direct.
  • Original producer Jack H. Harris returns.
  • When Rob was still involved he was quoted saying: "My intention is not to have a big red blobby thing, that’s the first thing I want to change. That gigantic Jello-looking thing might have been scary to audiences in the 1950s, but people would laugh now. I have a totally different take, one that’s pretty dark."
  • Rob Zombie was originally going to write, produce, and direct this project, but he dropped out after he felt he needed a break away from any "pre-existing material".
  • This is the second remake of the original, the first came out in 1988 and starred Kevin Dillon and Shawnee Smith.
  • A remake of the original 1958 film with the same name.

  • David Cronenberg, who directed the 1986 remake returns to write and possibly direct.
  • When Todd Lincoln was still attached to the project, it was said that the fly in the remake would actually fly this time.
