annihilation_xxlg.thumbnail%203.jpg

Area X has been cut off from the rest of the continent for decades. Nature has reclaimed the last vestiges of human civilization. The first expedition returned with reports of a pristine, Edenic landscape; the second expedition ended in mass suicide; the third expedition in a hail of gunfire as its members turned on one another. The members of the eleventh expedition returned as shadows of their former selves, and within weeks, all had died of cancer. In Annihilation, we join the twelfth expedition.

The group is made up of four women: an anthropologist; a surveyor; a psychologist, the de facto leader; and our narrator, a biologist. Their mission is to map the terrain, record all observations of their surroundings and of one another, and, above all, avoid being contaminated by Area X itself. They arrive expecting the unexpected, and Area X delivers―they discover a massive topographic anomaly and life forms that surpass understanding ― but it's the surprises that came across the border with them and the secrets the expedition members are keeping from one another that change everything.

  • EA and D.J. Caruso are currently talking to a number of potential screenwriters, and once they set a writer and EA signs off on a creative direction, they will auction the property to studios. It's said that it will likely happen in early September.

  • Danielle Savre plays "shark conservationist Dr. Misty Calhoun."
  • Rob Mayes plays a "highly decorated ex-Navy SEAL Trent Slater."
  • Michael Beach plays "Carl Durant, a billionaire with questionable ethics."
  • One of the producers was quoted saying: "We are a true sequel. We wanted to keep to the spirit of Deep Blue Sea and why people love it. The research that was used on the sharks in Deep Blue Sea 2 comes from the mythology and story line of the first movie. We have given the lead shark a personality and hope the fans will embrace that as it really helps the story telling and the narrative in a way that first one didn’t. Deep Blue Sea 2 has a slightly slower build but once the rubber band snaps things go boom really quickly!"
  • Directed by Darin Scott (Dark House, House Party: Tonight's the Night).
  • Since this is a much smaller budget than the first movie, don't expect any of the original key cast to return.
  • Jack Perez revealed his idea for a sequel in an interview, which would've happened had the studio not pulled the plug on it. He was quoted saying: "The script is about this scientific research ship that is seized by Somali pirates, and a team of Navy SEALs have to go in and take them out. The whole ship is basically a gigantic floating laboratory, with a maze of tunnels that the sharks can travel through that open up into tanks.” Into this seabound shark Habitrail go Sgt. Nate Pickett, NSA geneticist/marine biologist Dr. Alexandra Cruz and Pickett’s multiculti team of bad-ass soldiers. “My thinking was that this was Sgt. Rock vs. sharks, so I developed this platoon kind of based on my favorite Sgt. Rock characters. To a certain degree, it was similar to what they did in Predator; there were definitely echoes of that sort of motley group." Apparently the sharks would have been modified to incorporate machine guns, torpedoes and other weapons. (3/31/17)
  • A sequel has been rumored to be in development since the early 2000's, but it wasn't until 2009 that things started to really move when Warner Bros. hired Jack Perez (Wild Things 2, Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus) to write and direct, but that never came to fruition.
  • This is a sequel to the 1999 movie from director Renny Harlin, which starred names like Thomas Jane, LL Cool J, Michael Rapaport, Stellan Skarsgård and Samuel L. Jackson.

Stuff with claws. That’s the elevator pitch. And August is when we shoot it… It will be dynamic and exciting the same way that ‘Free Fire’ is. But it won’t be sadistic. But it will be fun. It’s a kind of a 50s B-Movie done through the prism of ‘Hill Street Blues’ and ‘Doom’."(4/21/17)

PROJECT DETAILS
  • Not much of an update, but Joe Dante had a recent interview where he revealed what may be the holdup in the sequel moving forward, saying: "I probably have less information to give you than anybody because I am not involved with it, I don’t control the material, it’s reverted back to Chris Columbus who wrote the script for the first movie. They have plans to do something but what Chris wants to do may not be what Warner wants to do and it’s not just Warner it’s also a lot of other people like Amblin and Steven Spielberg – everyone has to agree on what they want to do and at this point nobody is going to figure that out." Adding.. "I think the reuniting of the cast is highly unlikely. Perhaps a Gremlins prequel might be something they will do but I don’t know as I was not asked to be involved." (9/27/17)
  • Writer/producer Chris Columbus revealed that he has completed the script in a recent interview. Here's what he had to say: "I’m really proud of the script. It is as twisted and dark as anything, so we’ll see. It’s always a budgetary conversation when we’re going to shoot it. I wanted to go back to the really twisted sensibility of the first movie. I found that was a very easy place for me to fall back into and start writing again so hopefully we’ll see that movie soon." He also adds that there will be minimal CGI, saying: "Oh, without a doubt, minimal CGI. CGI will enable us to remove wires and make the puppeteers lives a little easier." Apparently the movie brings up the idea of killing Gizmo since he poses a threat if someone doesn't follow the rules: "That comes up in the movie, certainly… I think it probably is a good idea to be honest with you. Too many people are dying." (8/20/17)
  • The writer of the original, Christopher Columbus, produces and is working on the latest draft on the script.
  • Apparently the project is back on track and is officially going to be a remake instead of a sequel, as the studio has hired Carl Ellsworth (Disturbia, The Last House on the Left, Red Dawn, Goosebumps) to script. At the moment it's too early to tell who will be directing. (4/8/15)
  • It looks like talks of sequel/remake have died over time. It was revealed a couple years back that Seth Grahame-Smith and producing partner David Katzenberg were supposedly developing a remake, but that's no longer the case. Here's what Seth Grahame-Smith had to say in a recent interview: "It was a completely different cast of characters, but acknowledging the events of the first two movies…I think we just ran out of steam. It’s one of those things where everybody got busy doing other things. It’s something I would love to come back to, but right now Steven’s making two movies back to back and Chris Columbus is busy. We’re all taking a five-minute break on that." (1/16/15)
  • Previous Gremlins director Joe Dante has expressed interest in returning to the films with the "right script."
  • The studio reportedly once considered this to be in 3D.
  • This project initially started out as a remake, but over time (and through different writers) is now said to be a sequel.
