PC Moonbase Alpha (PC Steam game)

Next month a Steam game is coming out that is promoted as putting the players in "realistic Nasa exploration scenarios". It appears to be single player and cooperative with VOIP!!!

Created hand in hand with a games company and NASA you get to return to the moon, where the US government has called an end to that dream.

One mission is listed, a meteor strike causing an emergency. I don't see from the details if it is just the one scenario, or a series of major scenarios. with Steam games the option for Downloadable Content (DLC) is high so it could be upgraded with asteroid belt missions, Mars, or ISS. This could be interesting actually. Good graphics, logical actions, teamwork, no quick fixes, no aliens or conspiracies. Good for the kids and families all round? This is where gaming needs to be. Let's see if it lives up to the hype we all feel when considering it.

Re: Moonbase Alpha (Steam game)

It has been released!

NASA Games Moonbase Alpha was released on Tuesday, July 6th, 2010 and is part of NASA's Summer of Innovation program!

Visit NASA -MOONBASE ALPHA for the trailer and more info.

In Moonbase Alpha, you assume the exciting role of an astronaut on the lunar base in the year 2025. Returning from a research expedition, you witness a meteorite impact that cripples the life support capability of the settlement. With precious minutes ticking away, you and your team must repair and replace equipment in order to restore the oxygen production to the settlement.

Team coordination along with the proper use and allocation of your available resources (player controlled robots, rovers, repair tools, etc.) are key to your overall success. There are several ways in which you can successfully restore the life support system of the lunar base, but since you are scored on the time spent to complete the task, you have to work effectively as a team, learn from decisions made in previous gaming sessions, and make intelligence decisions in order to top the leaderboards.

"Our focus on Moon Base Alpha is to provide an accurate and immersive depiction of a lunar experience, a high level of replay value, and a test bed for multiplayer interactions that will be used in a much larger NASA game," said Jerry Heneghan, founder and CEO of Virtual Heroes, which was recently acquired by Applied Research Associates. "We currently are expecting for each game session to last approximately 15 minutes, but this will depend on player actions and extensive game tuning. our lead-in module will have several selectable maps geared toward providing players with several options that will cater to their own gaming experience, including maps geared for just two players or for just four players."
