Mute (Netflix, 2018)

Set in Berlin, Germany, in the year 2052 Mute is the story of a repatriated mute Amish man searching for his missing girlfriend. Directed by Duncan Jones, Mute stars Alexander Skarsgård as the main character with Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux.

This was an interesting movie because even though it is set in the future, think of the worlds of Blade Runner or Altered Carbon but in a European setting, it is really a drama that could that just as easily worked set in present time or even the past. Paul Rudd gives a great performance as an AWOL US military doctor who is working for the Russian mob. The aspect of US military police looking for AWOL soldiers gives the movie a bit of a feel that makes the story being told something that could be taking place in 1952 or 2052.

The reason why it is set in 2052? If "Duncan Jones" rings a bell it is because he also directed and co-wrote the 2009 movie Moon. When you see a TV in the background of Mute take note of what is being shown as it ties the two movies together putting them in the same 'verse. It is a very subtle connection but one that Jones has confirmed is part of his plan to tie in several of his planned movies.

If you're looking for a shiny sci-fi action movie then you might find Mute a bit boring but if you like noir-like movies with a bit of cyberpunk thrown in then add this one to your queue.
