Hubble Hooks a One-Arm Galaxy

potw2012a.jpg

Located about 21 million light-years from our galaxy in the constellation Canes Venatici, NGC 4618 has a diameter of about one-third that of our Milky Way. Together with its neighbor, NGC 4625, it forms an interacting galaxy pair, which means that the two galaxies are close enough to influence each other gravitationally. Hubble Spots Spirals Within a Spiral

potw2014a.jpg

A galaxy having so many distinct rings is rare, making NGC 2273 unusual. Galaxy NGC 2273 hosts an inner ring and two outer “pseudorings." Rings are created when a galaxy's spiral arms appear to loop around and nearly close upon one another. (More at NASA Picture of The Day)
